Referring to the quote above, I can relate to the first two lines with my knowledge of leadership because I became who I have become because of how I grew up. Being a leader is not just being a leader, it is a whole lot more. You have to have a person to be that leader, to be able to bring people to trust them, and follow them as a leader. The next three lines are strong. To be able to be a leader you have to use yourself completely and be aware of what is around you. That person must be able to use everything they know and what they were taught while growing up. They have to be able to see clearly and not blurry. The next line helps a leader hold nothing back and put everything on the table. The final two lines go back to the beginning because as a leader you have to become what you have learned to become and enjoy what you have become. First, I can use my vision to see what I, myself has become. Seeing and knowing what I have become over the past twenty-one years of being me is amazing. Looking at pictures to see how I got to where I am and what obstacles I have overcame throughout my lifetime. Using my vision I can see the highs and lows. Highs can be anything I have accomplished and who was by my side, like graduating from high school. Lows can be anything that has kept me from growing, like failing a class. In my lifetime I had some visions in the clear perspective and others in the blurry perspective, but along the way I have seen many people, like myself grow and
My personal leadership philosophy describes who I am as a Soldier, a Non- Commissioned Officer, and a man who serves his country proudly. As a leader, I believe that all members of my team are important. As a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, I believe, as the NCO creed says, “Non-Commissioned officers are the backbone of the Army.” It is very important to know your role as a NCO and fulfill all of your duties and responsibilities inherent in that role. We can all contribute to the mission and we have to understand that no one job is more important than the other. Teamwork is always provided in my leadership philosophy and if we all work together as a team we will all have the ability to make a positive difference in each other lives. When this is accomplished, then I
"Where there is no community, trust, respect, ethical behavior, it is difficult for the young to learn and from the old to maintain" (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002, p. 68). The founder of servant leadership, Robert K Greenleaf; considered that every person ought to own values that could support and guide others. Greenleaf 's philosophy was that "the servant leader is a servant first; it begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve" (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010, p. 22). To serve, people must comprehend values, which are a person 's ethics of behavior shaping his or her vision. Moreover, values are distinctive from taking the survey created by Milton Rokeach; which consists of the most important morals and beliefs and how
“Where there is no community, trust, respect, ethical behavior is difficult for the young to learn and from the old to maintain” (Robert K Greenleaf). The founder of servant leadership, Robert K Greenleaf; believes that every person ought to own values that could support and guide others. According to Greenleaf, “The servant leader is servant first; it begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve”(…………….). In order to serve people must comprehend values; which are a person’s ethics of behavior shaping his or her vision. In addition, values could be distinct from taking the survey created by Milton Rokeach; which consist of the most important morals and beliefs and how it influences people, organizations, and society (Johnston, 1995). Furthermore, servant leaders have a purpose; which can be determined with the personal models of leadership; which are the advancement of personal growth and values. My personal model of leadership reflects and creates a purpose on my values and beliefs; which are trust, responsibility, equality and loving demonstrating how it impacts an individual, interpersonal, organizational and societal. In conclusion, once people comprehend their value and decide their personal model it will define them as a servant leader because it does not matter if it is today or tomorrow, the values will then have the same principles (Lee, Fabish & McGaw, 2005).
In nearly all the activities we engage in, and the organizations we are incorporated to there are leaders whether at the top most level or the junior levels. The prime purpose of their existence is to offer guidance and control over certain things. However, it has been argued that not everyone can become a leader. This is because there are certain traits believed to be existent in someone that makes them qualify for the leadership post. Some have however disagreed with this concept saying that anyone suits to become a leader if though they are given the platform.
“She knew you would make the right decisions,” is what my sister said to me as the room of onlookers glared awaiting my response. Amidst the grief of the moment, I struggled to grasp ahold of my abilities, and thoughts, resisting the urge to scream at the universe and engage my right to squander in my grief. In reality, I was the youngest sibling, holding the accountability of being an active leader. This was not your everyday decision making process, it was the planning of burial arrangements after the loss of our mother. Rapidly, decoding through the streams of my emotions, I collected my strength and continued with the process. In the end, I survived by drawing upon my emotional intelligence, intuition, and practical skills.
Leadership is a amazing quality to have and it should be a characteristic of everyone. For me, it means that you are able to take charge in difficult or stressful situations and make it so everyone that is there is able to do their job. A time that I had to be a leader was seven months ago when I was asked to be a assistant instructor at the United States Taekwondo Academy. I had got my first degree Black Belt about two weeks before and it was time for me to step up and take charge of new students and help them achieve Black belt and to help them learn what they needed to. Even now, I am still a assistant instructor and one day I hope to be a full instructor in the next few years. I still have a lot to learn about taking charge and making sure
At Bishop Dwenger High School the students are held to very high standards in our academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities. However, in NHS those standards are raised even higher as we are expected to also be leaders in these areas of our lives. I am greatly honored and thankful to be invited into this prestigious program. This has been a goal of mine and I have worked very hard to get here. I have become a leader in my academic life, co-curricular activities, and extracurricular activities.
I am always in control of my goals, by remaining focused on the task at hand and what the requirements may be. Treating each situation as its own and not attempting to categorize a problem to a specific solution has proven to be effective in solving employee’s conflict. I firmly believe that by explaining to an employee the reason for a specific process, and why it should be done in a specific manner is ensuring their success. Listening to them and taking their ideas into consideration also gives them a feel of self-empowerment. My concept is that, the employees are the ones that are doing the process everyday therefore they probably may find a new innovative way of doing it. This approach of empowering employees gives them the sense of ownership, forcing them to go above and beyond with little or no supervision. By showing employees that we are all part of a bigger circle working towards the same specific
As a graduate student approaching her final semester in school, thoughts regarding my leadership abilities in the soon-to-be “real world” have occupied my mind lately. To further explore and develop my ideas about leadership, I decided to develop my personal leadership theory. So, I asked myself the following questions: What makes a successful leader? How do you recognize a leader when you meet one?, and lastly, what is my theory of leadership? With this last question I thought about what leadership meant to me personally and how I personified it in a role of authority. While I had given thought to how I led, I had rarely taken the time to fully understand what my personal leadership theory entailed. Throughout the length of this paper I will analyze how my leadership skills, traits, values and elements from both Authentic Transformational theories help me to shape my leadership philosophy. In doing so I hope to define the leadership values that influence the way I view and practice leadership.
The ways in which my leadership strengths are capable of being used within in organization had never been something that I had thought about prior to the strength finder activity. For me a position of leadership had always been a potential future responsibility of mine. However, upon taking the strength finder quiz, three of the results that I received were developer, connectedness and learner, and I began to see how I could use these in my work upon graduation. The future of the way in which individuals approach work is changing, no longer is the need of the organizations paramount over the employers. In order to be a productive member of the future of organization, I need to understand how I can use my leadership skills within the
Leadership is “a process whereby an individual influence a group of individuals to achieve common goals” (Lewis, J., Lewis, M., & Packard, 2012, p. 235). The people that I have come across in my childhood, in high school, and serving in ministry have significantly influenced my definition of leadership. I have seen my model on leadership has been concrete on this experiences and growth as a result of their influence in my life. Therefore, I look at leadership as a potential and ability to contribute significantly to an organization, community, individuals and to the whole society. In that past at many stages of my life, I have experienced significant contributions, sometimes in a formal set up and sometimes in absolutely informal manner. Therefore, in this paper, I will discuss the experiences that have shaped the way I approach the concept of leadership.
After eight years as an educator, I have had different leadership responsibilities such as been the leader of the disciplinary committee, the treasurer of the school, the union representative, and mentor for new teachers. Most of my professional experiences as an educator has been in Puerto Rico. After moving to Florida, I have been teaching in Gateway High School for two years, going into my third. This year, my school administrator decided that, I will be the Professional Learning Community (PLC) leader of the United States History program.
There are always chances and possibilities to become a good leader regardless the odds against you, gender, age, race, education, previous experience, etc. This paper defines what leadership is and it explains the relationship between leadership and influence. It also highlights the importance of finding opportunities to develop skills and creating strong to become a good leader. It is also emphasized the power of influence that comes from motivating your team, to improve performance and satisfaction and that setting a clear goal is mandatory for good leadership. The conclusion summarizes all the topics under discussion.
As I reflect on my original paper in addition to class discussions and outside reading I can now say I have only had two principals in twenty plus years who I would consider leaders. In my first paper, I characterized a principal as a strong leader, role model, manager. I would now have to add community leader, effective communicator and change strong leader to a strong visionary leader.
My group feels I am good at maintaining relationships. One of my team mates told me he was very much surprised to notice my presence in his surprise birthday party. I have always maintained good relations with my team mates not only in the meetings or in the office but also beyond the office walls. Understanding my teammate’s needs has always been first on my priority list; it helps me in order to assign a particular task to the subordinate well suited for that task. It also helps me in making decisions to reward & promote my teammates. Maintaining a good relationship with your team helps in building trust in your team which ultimately results in best work out
