Teaching is a career that takes patience, passion, and desire. Since I was about ten years old, my passion has resided in teaching, specifically special education teaching. When my aunt adopted my twin cousins and found out they were autistic, I never would have expected the hard road she would have to go down in terms of their education. My motivation to teach has always been and always will be my cousins. Without them, I would have never found the desire and love I have for special education children. A quote by Magic Johnson that I feel describes why I want to be a special education teacher perfectly is, “All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them.” Special Ed children, no matter how they must be taught or how much they can comprehend, have the same rights to an education as any other child. My personal beliefs on education stem not only from what my aunt went through, but from personal experience. I feel education has become so technologically based that students feel they no longer need teachers. There are also many teachers that substitute using technology for teaching their students. Toyama (2006) noted that “supervision from human teachers, parents, and mentors is the only known way of generating motivation for the hours of a school day, to say nothing of eight to twelve school years.” Technology is a resource for teaching, it is not the teacher. My career path to education is one that has evolved over the years. Growing up I always know I wanted to work with children. Within my undergrad experience become a teacher seem to feel like it was where I belong. Being in the position of starting my path as a special education teacher for mild to moderate, I can see how my role as an educator can have an impact on students’ lives.
As children we have many goals and dreams. Eventually, the time comes when we have to make a career decision based on our interests and goals. The choices that we make now will have a lasting effect on our lives. Like most college students I have explored many career options, but I am always lead back to the education field. Teachers have a very difficult job because they have the power to shape and inspire our future nation. For me, the decision to become a teacher is more of a way of life than a career. I have always loved school, practicing at being school marm from a young age, and voraciously devouring every shred of education offered me in my career as a student. If it were possible, I would be a student for the rest of my life. And then I still would not have learned enough. As a teacher, I hope to instill this appetite for knowledge in secondary students. They are, after all, the future leaders of the world, and what better place to expand the minds of the generations to come than here in Appalachia where education programs, especially the sciences, which I plan to teach, are poorly funded and children’s dreams
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Angelou, 2009) This is a truth that I have witnessed firsthand. As a child, at the tender age of seven years, I was blessed with an educator, Mrs. Cager, whose commitment to her students was so profound until I have never forgotten her. She made me feel like I was the most important person in her classroom. Her encouraging words instilled a level of confidence within me that I still cling to and apply more than 40 years later. Her commitment is directly responsible for my personal philosophy of education also being commitment.
The purpose of public education is to enable students to be contributing members of society. Without it, the world would not be as we know it today in a very intelligent and complex society. Education is important in very many ways, probably too many to be listed. But I believe that among all other things that it allows students, by being educated, to live their lives in a way in which they can be successful in whatever they do. By learning about the trials and errors of those who came before us permits students to make well thought out decisions later on in their life. Teaching has always been a part of my life. The idea of learning new things intrigued me from a young age. I watched my older brother go to school for years before I finally started my first day of kindergarten. I recall begging my mom to buy me a book-bag and give me homework to do like my brother received. I was fascinated with school and once I started kindergarten, I loved it. My kindergarten teacher made the classroom feel like home and encouraged us to always be our best. This is also where the idea of becoming a teacher started brewing in my brain. There was one afternoon, where I told my kindergarten teacher that I loved kindergarten so much, I wanted to become a kindergarten teacher like her. Although she found it sweet, she actually responded by telling me I should look into other careers instead of teaching. Looking back at her suggestion, I understand why she suggested I look into other careers. Being a teacher is not as simple as it looks. I am fortunate enough to have taught in New Paltz, Poughkeepsie, Manhattan, and Binghamton. I am currently substituting in the Binghamton School Districts. There are so many challenges teachers deal with inside and outside of the classroom. I witness various of misunderstandings in the classroom between teachers in their students. Curriculums are also constantly changing and they are not always in the best interest of the students. Education field is a tricky field to be in, but it contains so many personal rewards. Teachers

I know in my heart, teaching has always been my calling. It is the deed which I shall never grow tired of doing. As far as I can recall, that fire burned in me since I was twelve years old. I have always wanted to be a Special Education teacher. I want to help individuals with special needs live their lives to the fullest and find meaning to their accomplishments, be it small or big.
I believe that teaching is one of the most important professions in the world today. From the very beginning, until present time, teaching has been around. The book of Genesis speaks of God walking and talking with Adam in The Garden of Eden, God was teaching Adam. I will be proud to, one day, be a part of this great calling.
I believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls, and involves many more people than students and teachers. People should be learning wherever they go, and should continue learning long after they’ve graduated from high school or college. Education isn’t something that can be quantified with tests or report cards, but is instead something that people carry with them. It’s a survival pack for life, and some people are better equipped in certain areas than in others. People with a solid education are prepared for nearly anything, as they will be able to provide for their own physical, emotional, and aesthetic needs.
My goals upon graduating College are to go to graduate school while working days as a Science 5-9 teacher. I will seek masters in Biology and also one in Administration I feel with my specialty in science these two masters programs will be very beneficial to me as a teacher. Upon graduating from graduate school I plan to pursue a career in School Administration.
Education is the process of learning that can take place anywhere and at any time. I believe that creativity and activity as well as books and lessons are essential to the learning process. As a teacher, I hope to instill in the children a sense of knowledge and self-worth that will remain with them throughout their lives.
Teaching is an extremely rewarding job because you get to make a difference in children's lives and help guide them to make the right choices in life. I want to be a special education teacher because it is the one way to directly impact and develop a new generation of thinking individuals. Being a goal oriented person, I have high expectations for myself as teacher and for my students. Coupled with tons of patience, I am sure I will be able to gel with my students and train them in the required subject areas and short and long term goals. Once I began working as a Teacher's Assistant at Manhattan East Junior High School, I utilized my creativity, passion for learning and acquiring knowledge to continually strive to make attending school daily, something to look forward to.
In the field of education there could arise many philosophical ideas of each individual teacher. Many of the past philosophies have been and still are used in today’s education programs, such as the Socratic method. My philosophy will also contain some of the many philosophies of the past and possibly the future. I will state the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purpose of public education, method, and curriculum according to my own philosophies, which also may be based the philosophical ideas of previous individuals.
I believe all children can learn to read in a classroom that is integrated with differentiated instruction and has a safe and engaging learning environment which is rich with a variety of literature to light that spark in the children to want to learn. I will make an effort to get to know my children in order to be able to provide a classroom library with nonfiction books to inform the inquiring mind, picture books for the artistic mind, and fiction books to entertain. All books will be chosen based on their curiosity, interest, personal connection, and learning profile, in order to attract and enchant the young readers into going back to the book area again and again.
