From both my professional and academic experiences I have acquired invaluable knowledge and experience that I am confident have more than prepared me for an Information Officer I position with the California Department of Insurance. With a bachelor’s degree in communication from a top California university and practice in both the private and public sector, I have developed a plethora of skills in the realm of communications, including engaging with clients through various channels, leading key presentations to large groups of audiences, and collaborating successfully with other departments and team members.
My professional and academic experiences have also allowed me to hone my writing skills to convey key messages not only to the public, but also to legislators, media, clients and internal audiences. While working at Dewey Square Group I have worked on behalf of various clients including a large manufacturing company, a trade association and multiple universities who have required public information campaigns and public relations materials to be developed including press releases, statements, reports, Q&As, talking points, speeches, scripts and other pieces of collateral.
One client, a large manufacturer in California, has continued to be publicly scrutinized over the past few years. As part of the public relations team hired by the manufacturer, it has been my assignment to use my writing skills to create press releases, statements, fact sheets, opinion-editorials
For my last class I went to a Montessori school for my practicum field experience, and as you mentioned with the homeschooling, they also use the method that allows the students to learn at their own pace, the students are not rushed into going to the next level just because they have spent too much time in one level. I had never heard of this concept until I went there, when I went to the interview and met the principal she told me "This is a non-traditional school, are you ok with it"? that's when I asked and she began to explain and of course I also looked it up online and learned more, but whatever I knew prior to being in the classroom could not prepare me for what I saw in the classroom of about ten students and all of them working on
This memorandum offers insight about writing in the business world and the different challenges people face. I took a professional out to lunch to conduct an interview on the writing challenges he faces in his career.
My previous work experience as reporter for my school's paper, Tiger’s Roar have provided me with a strong base of communication knowledge and helped me learn how
If you have a negative interaction with a co-worker and it becomes heated how you would go about resolving it professionally?
I am an experienced customer service individual with strong communication skills, proven success in generating creative ideas, and understand the power of team work. I acknowledge the importance of excellent communication at all levels within any given institution. I am also a computer savvy.
Over the course of my career I have had the opportunity to work for dozens of leaders that aided me in the development of my leadership style. As one would easily recognize not all leaders had a constructive impact on my career but rather provided leadership traits to avoid. One person that I have learned a considerable amount from is my father. My father instilled in me the fact that I need to work hard, complete the task at hand, dedicate time to the betterment of my people, and myself and have fun while doing all of this. Another person that introduced considerable leadership influence on me are my grandfathers. My grandfathers lived very different lives; one was a businessman, while the other was a US Army post-WWII veteran, yet they had a uniformed message. That message was continuously grow, be aggressive in studies and work, stay active, and finish what you started. Two additional influencers of leadership are CDR Michael Fredie and MCPO Darrick Dewitt. CDR Fredie is a natural leader, and lives the quote made famous by Theodore Roosevelt, “Speak Softly and carry a big stick; you will go far”. He has the uncanny ability to influence others to work harder through passion and inspiration. Whereas MCPO Dewitt is an authoritative figure that demands respect and continuously inspires his workforce to better themselves in pursuit of bettering the unit, rating, and service.
Trent Small-Towns, current junior at The University of Mississippi, has decided to propel his writing skills and take part in the Advanced Writing for Integrated Marketing Communications course this spring (IMC 390.) Under the guide of Professor Debbie Hall’s real world experience and expertise, Small-Towns says that he hopes to advance his knowledge of writing as “not only a journalist but also as an IMC student.”
This class has overall been one of my favorite classes that I have taken over the past four years five years at DeSales. I learned more than I expected and have implemented some of these learned lessons towards simple excel calculations into my work at my job. For my chosen project, I decided to take a look at one of my hobbies. During my senior year I took a personal finance and discussed with one of my professors about my collection of trading cards. The result of this conversation, had me start thinking about the overall value of my collection for insurance purposes and if I ever sold the collection.
Before taking any courses, this student had a general idea of how communication is an essential component in any working environment. After taking many courses in the Polk State Bachelor's program, the course GEB 3213 (Advanced Communications in Business) was a course that enlightened this student on the essential skills and concepts that are necessary to know when working in a professional environment. This course taught this student how to be able to structure business communications for maximum effect through style, tone, and grammar, how to comprehend the strategies used to construct the types of business messages commonly used in the business environment, for example, like how to write a professional email. Also this course taught this student how to effectively research and organize information into effective business reports and visual presentations. Not only did this course set this student up for a bright future in the business world through means of communication, but this course also helped this student's writing when it came to completing the rest of her bachelors courses in the this program. The knowledge and skills that this student learned in this course will be essential key components that are necessary to have when working in a professional corporate
My life has been impacted immensely through my experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor for the City of Ottawa. I have had a passion for aquatics ever since I was a young child, and remained committed towards my goal of completing various courses and certifications in order to obtain the lifeguard and swimming instructor position that I hold now. I work approximately thirteen hours a week at this job, on top of the hours I commit to my two other jobs. Aside from my paid employment, I have learned to manage my time effectively in order to participate in numerous extracurricular activities, as well as to maintain strong academic performance. As a swimming instructor, I am expected to prepare weekly and long range lesson plans for the
For this assignment I had the opportunity to speak with Adam Weissman. I met Adam through a family member. Adam has been working in the public relations field since he graduated from Marist college in 2000. After Adam graduated from college he went to work in what would eventually be ten different public relation agencies mostly performing as an Account Supervisor. Currently, Adam is working as an Account supervisor in the Media Relations department at Max Borges Agency.
I am interested in pursuing a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology, specifically the discipline of psychopathology. This field of study is particularly appealing to me due to the profound knowledge it can bring to society. Understanding the causes of mental disorders, such as anxiety disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, and many others, is crucial as well as developing treatments to help such individuals cope with their illnesses without the illnesses taking over their lives. I aspire to be a part of this process to help others and to help society progress, as a whole. Professionally, I am striving for a career as a researcher-practitioner. I also plan on going into academia, later on, as a professor of psychology. I feel the latter
My overall educational experience at West Los Angeles College was great. I have met professors and counselors that changed my life. They believed in me before I believe in myself. Those mentors have been encouraging and supporting me unconditionally. I dream that one day I could have the chance to make a difference in the life of a student like those heroes did. Being involved in the community have supported me tremendously in my journey. As an immigrant, a low-income family and a mom, without the support of programs like the EOP&s, I wouldn't be able to achieve what I have accomplished in my
When we were kids, my sister and I always had one question. My parents have said that they would be pushing us both in a stroller in the middle of the mall and my older sister would ask “what’s his name?” She would keep repeating this until they gave her an answer—whether or not it was an accurate one. Sitting next to her, I would then pipe up saying “why?” and (as expected) this question stumped them. This “why” question established my interest in the field of psychology and in my future pursuit of academia. Why do people act and feel the way they do?
