My Reading and Writing Experience For as long as I can remember, reading has always been a hobby of mine. Both of my parents encouraged me at a young age to pick up books, and they furthered this by reading to me often. They influenced my interest in fiction and nonfiction, and when my sister was born, I would do the same for her. Even though I still like to read, I have found more hobbies and my interests have changed. Nevertheless, I still have the same enjoyment reading my favorite literature that I had when I was little. Also, I have developed a fondness for writing in the last few years as well. Looking back, my earliest memories of reading can be traced to my early youth when my Mom would read me books related to Barney and Friends, Blue’s Clues, and Winnie the Pooh. Perhaps my favorite set of books at this time was the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series. As I grew a few years older, my interests in reading developed as well. I transitioned to all kinds of literature from Zoobook magazines, to the Harry Potter series. My Mom jumpstarted my love of fantasy literature by reading the first three books of Harry Potter to me. …show more content…
I began to notice that the sports he watched, such as Football and Basketball, were pretty fun and exciting, so naturally, I wanted to read more about these games. I checked out a College Football encyclopedia at my school’s library, and it was not long before I was hooked on the game. Reviewing this, I developed an interest in the University of Florida athletic teams, and began researching and reading articles about the Gators and other sports teams as well. After this, I combined my love of fiction reading when I started reading the Mike Lupica books which included Travel Team, Heat, Summer Ball, Million Dollar Throw, and The Big Field. Thanks to my Dad, I became a lifelong sports fan, and found a new favorite genre of
My love of reading blossomed when I was a child, because my parents showed me how wonderful reading is. There were countless nights when I remember myself as a little girl refusing to go to sleep before ‘tucking dad into bed’ by reading him a picture book. Not only did I uphold that tradition though, but my mother is a preschool teacher, so she gets really into reading out loud, and she would help me read books such as The Boxcar Children set, The Secret of NIMH and The Chronicles of Narnia weekly until I didn’t need help anymore.
As I look back on my childhood, I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t fond of reading. I love the way a good book just draws you in and it is almost impossible to set it down because you want to know what happens next! Looking back to my earliest moments I can always remember my mom and grandma always reading me books for hours and hours at a time. My favorite saying when I was younger was, “just read one more!” I couldn’t go to sleep without my mom at least reading me five books! My favorite was “The Little Mermaid” but I loved all of the princess books and I had possibly every one you could think of!
Some of my earliest memories of reading and writing took place in preschool. My former teacher, Mrs. Williams always made reading a fun and new experience which helped encourage us to read. I remember always being excited to read a new book as if I were embarking on a new adventure. My mother also encouraged me to read by reading to my brother and I at bedtime. She also gave us plenty of genres to choose from. Even though my dad did not reach much, my mom was very much interested in books about British crime mysteries. My brother, on the other hand, read anime’ comics and video game instruction pamphlets. Although reading has not been my strongest subject, the subject has always been part of my life.
Write down for both your writing - as well as for your audio-visual skills what your strengths and weakness are. Be concrete and detailed. Give evidence / arguments why you think this is so. Below some sentences are given which may help you on your way.
Writing has continuously served as a getaway in my life. It has kept me from bottling up my thoughts and emotions and has allowed me to express all of these things on paper. Communicating through speaking has always been a weakness of mine. It is for this reason that I often turn to writing to convey my feelings. Though have such an immense passion for free-writing, I have found myself struggling when comes to writing academic papers. Generally, I enjoy writing when it is something that I am interested in. In Composition I and II, I often have had the opportunity to choose the topic that I write my paper on. I am confident that this has been a major turning point for me within my academic essays. Ultimately, Composition I and II have taught
Throughout this semester, I have personally developed and improved as a writer, through the weekly writing tasks set for the writers Journal. This procedure of composing Journal entries and assessment tasks involves critical reflection on the information provided and on myself developing those skills. During my school years, books were always as a part of my life, reading gave me joy, swept me towards my memories and took me along Journies never been before. However, I never thought of myself as a writer, composing short stories, writings and texts for others to read. I have realised that my goal is to become an influential educator to children who are yet to discover their potentials, goals and interests. Loan and Muir (2017) say “as teachers,
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been writing, both inside and outside of class. While I haven’t always been drawn to reading classics, I have spent a lot of time reading in general, and it always seemed to encourage me. I was easily inspired by the words on the pages coming to life in my mind, and even more fascinated by the fact that the image almost certainly looked different to every individual who took the words in themselves. I’ve always enjoyed being able to paint images in the minds of others and intrigued to learn just how much different it must look to each person who took in the words that I wrote. Did they look different to other people, or did everyone have the same general idea? How close were their own images to mine?
As a person who enjoys the subject of English, I feel safe to say that I do have a love for reading and writing. Reading helps me escape to another world, and developing a well-written essay is very satisfying. My favorite genres are historical/science fiction, and I’m a fan of dystopian novels. Oddly enough, the wretched societies and brutal experiences within these books cause me to look at life with a better perspective, and it opens my eyes as to of what could be, and what is. My strengths as a reader include my ability to decipher a piece of text, and read quickly enough to complete a book within a couple of days. Contrarily, I find it very difficult to get myself through books which I may not feel a connection with, and that tends to
English has always been an awkward subject for me. Growing up in a Russian speaking household, I always felt at a disadvantage compared to other students. Throughout high school and the start of college I chose to stray away from writing by pursuing a majority of math and science courses through engineering studies. I despised writing essays and I never enjoyed spending my time reading and writing. As someone who claims to be a logical thinker it was hard to translate my thoughts and opinions into writing. I tried escaping English any chance granted to me.
My first college writing experience consisted of several resumes and cover letters for the various work-study jobs that I applied to. Prior to that, I have constructed numerous essays where I primarily critiqued the literary works of many well-known authors. In junior year of high school, I critiqued the notable poetry of a unique author-- Wislawa Szymborska. The poetry Szymborska wrote was very intricate and rich in subliminal messages. Her poetry usually disregarded the use of rhyme, and instead focused on the sophisticated use of metaphors and allusions. In addition, I continued to evaluate other notable literary works in my senior year of high school. My English teacher instructed me to analyze the poetry of John Donne-- who focused on constructing short poems which reflected complex messages through the use of extended metaphors. I
Reading has been one of my favorite hobbies since I was a little child. I grew up as a normal child should grow and eventually I had to start learning for me to fit in society. My literacy started many years ago, after I knew how to talk and communicate with people. Reading my alphabet was quite stressful and I had to be given a hand by my family members. I remember my parents reading with me and it was the most meaningful and memorable way to spend time with me. This is because I liked reading a lot and I was eager to learn so that I could fit in with my older siblings. My favorite books were storybooks taking about adventures and fairytales
My love for reading began at a very young age. In fact, it began before I could even make the words out myself. Some of my earliest memories are those of my mother reading me bedtime stories. This quickly became one of my favorite past-times. I remember begging her every night to just read me one more story. This is pretty normal behavior from a child. Little did I know, this yearn for reading would mold the woman I am today, and stick with me throughout a lifetime.
I remember my mom reading to me in Spanish was I was about four years old. The smell of Cuban coffee would fill up the room every night as I was being read to. I would always play out the stories in my head I would go to sleep. This always had a positive impact as I grew older and wiser. Although I had never stopped using my imagination, especially when it came to books. I was inspired to read to my younger sister and teach her all that I had already learned. Reading is very fun to me, I find it entertaining when I digest a good book that has the right material. I have my mother to thank for having read to me when I was younger. The foundation to my interest in books started at a very young age and it was right along her side. Until this day
While growing up, I was never really the most articulate writer in school. Most of my papers either had the discursive type of writing or was the most prolix essay that no one could understand. As a student, I was always given a rhetorical topic that was never appealing to me or my audience. As more writing assignments presented themselves, the more I thought of writing as distasteful. Kindergarten through Junior year of high school was very bland when it came to writing and reading projects. Never realizing the idea or approach as to how I should properly construct an essay was difficult for me. Until Senior year, I always wrote essays in a ponderous way.
For as long as I can remember, books have always been an escape from reality. I would spend hours reading book after book. My mom would always tease me me and say that I couldn’t go a five minute car ride without reading my book of choice. I also relied on books during the numerous car trips my family took. I have never enjoyed being bored, so I would bring stacks of books in the car to occupy my timwe. By second grade I was already reading chapter books and from there my infatuation only grew. From the Harry Potter series to the Percy Jackson series, I read anything I could get my hands on. I enjoyed being able to jump from a world with dragons and magic brooms to damsels in distress. As a kid when I was asked, “What do you want to be when you are older?”, I never knew what to say because there were so many different things that interested me. I believe this is another reason why books have always appealed to me. They allowed me to be several different characters and experience tons of different worlds. Even today I enjoy reading. Now, some may say this is an unusual obsession for a young kid to have. However, I blame one very important variable in my life for this love; I did not have a television growing up.
