Prevalence of Nurse Bullying in Intensive Care Units
Article Summary In a research report of a quantitative, quasi-experimental, exploratory survey, convenience study by Ganz et al. (2015), the authors discussed that registered nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) are often bullied by fellow employees. The authors noted that literature about the prevention of bullying has been published, but the amount of bullying has not been documented, nor have any reports been published on the prevention of bullying in ICUs. Using a convenience sample of 156 registered nurses, Ganz et al. (2015) explored the prevalence of bullying in 15 ICUs in 5 different medical centers in Israel.
No problems arose during the pilot test of 25 questionnaires; therefore, the questionnaires were administered and responses were returned to a central location in a sealed envelope (Ganz et al., 2015). The theory is that medical centers with higher bullying prevention scores would have lower incidents of bullying. This theory is situation-specific because it is limited to registered nurses working in an ICU, which is a precise field of nursing practice. While research questions were not stated directly in the study, one research question could be if nurse participation in bullying prevention programs would reduce the future incidence of bullying in ICUs. Another research question could be do medical centers that offer bullying prevention programs and achieve a higher bullying prevention score have a lower incidence of bullying than facilities that do not offer bullying prevention programs and achieve a lower bullying prevention
