Nathan Postoak Ms. Lena Thomas English IV 2nd hour Time for a Change: Raise Teachers Salaries Oklahoma is ranked forty eighth in the U.S for average teacher’s salary with $44,373 (“Oklahoma Teachers Salary”). That’s not good for the state of Oklahoma. I believe teachers are the heart and soul of this state and country. If it weren’t for teachers there would be no doctors, lawyers, or even congress members. According to Matthew J. Brouillette, “Doctors, lawyers, and engineers can practice their profession in variety of ways. They can be employed by organizations, they can partner with others, or they can work themselves in private practice. School teachers lack such essential choices” (Brouillette). Teachers under go to much just to get paid …show more content…
It is not like teachers do not have other things to worry about. Teachers have bills just like every other American in this country. Lets also think about wither or not these teachers have kids. If the teachers do have kids, they probably have to worry about their school supplies to. Maybe their kids play sports or part of other after school activities; I am willing to bet that participating in those activities cost money to. I also sure they do not get to work for free. There cars or trucks cost money, and the gas they use to drive them cost money also. Let us just set aside all the worldly things and get back to just the teaching aspects of it all. They spend whole lot of money on supplies. Why can we not give teachers a raise? They spend too much money on supplies that should be given to them. They do not have all the resources to just go out and buy these things. Let us look for possible solutions to this problem. There is no need for teachers to buy there own …show more content…
We need to start appreciating how much time and effort our teachers put forward into our education. They don’t have to waist their lives on the students, but they do it anyways. Why do they have to work so hard off of hours and not get paid for it when others get praised for it? Nobody can understand what a teacher goes through unless it is a teacher themselves. Teachers not only deserve a raise they deserve more respect. Now of days people are starting to give less respect to teachers more and more. Teachers will keep doing what they are doing, but not getting the pay they deserve for the hours they put in during and out off work is not right. Give teachers the pay they deserve or we will see a decline of teachers in our
I can personally say that I have had teachers put in so much extra time to help me, because I was struggling in class. They aren’t getting paid for the extra time they put in; they just do it because they care about the future of their students. If we didn’t have teachers who care for the future of young kids then Oklahoma’s education system would be no existent, we would be dead last and on the brink of having the worst economy in the United States. I have grown up and lived in Norman Oklahoma my whole life and I don’t want to see our education system crumble into nothing or just barely hang on and struggle like we have been for a long time now. I want to see our education system start to work its way to the top and see the teachers who have taught me since I was in Kindergarten finally get paid the salary they deserve. I have traveled all over and have been to more than 30 states and multiple countries and I can honestly say that Oklahoma has some of the most caring, hardworking, genuine, give the shirt off their own back kind of people. So we need to start acting like it and come together as a community and raise the salaries of the people who are some of the most compassionate and caring humans around and that’s our teachers. Some people would say that they are the backbone of our community because they are the ones grooming the kids who will someday run the community and
Teachers play one of the biggest roles in schools, they’re the individuals who are responsible for students learning and developing. Teachers also have can have an influence on students that’ll follow them as they enter college and the real world. However, despite teachers having arguably one of the most important jobs ever, teachers aren’t being paid as much as they should be. According to one Study called “Closing the Talent Gap” by McKinsey teachers’ salaries have been declining for the past 40 years. In this past decade alone, salaries have decreased further in 30 states. If teacher salaries had grown proportionally to our classroom spending, the average annual salary would now be about $120,000. Teachers should be paid more because better
Andrew G. Biggs and Jason Richwine states that average public school teachers have paid too much than the private sector including the fringe benefits. They mentioned it was an inefficient fee for taxpayers. And Lisa Snell point out the fact that in the elementary and secondary school teacher increased a lot than before. And it creates a problem that too many teachers work because of the salaries. She insists that the governors need to focus on pay for high-quality teachers instead of the number. However, C. Kent Mcguire does not have the same opinion as them and think teachers are not overpaid because it could maintain the high-quality teachers. People could not use the money concept to value the knowledge and skills.
Most people would agree that teachers are educated professionals much like attorneys and physicians. However, many of these same people think it is not necessary for teachers' wages to be quite as substantial as the wages of doctors and lawyers because teachers are not asked to attend quite as much school. Teachers may not need to be as highly educated as physicians or attorneys, but they do have to complete a fair amount of education in order to earn and maintain a teaching license. Most teaching programs in colleges and universities are difficult to complete in less than five years. Much like physicians and attorneys, public school teachers are required to take an exam in order to receive the necessary license to practice their profession. Teachers must also continue to attend classes in order to maintain their certifications. More important, there are several careers that require less formal education than teaching, and these careers tend to pay more substantial salaries than public school teachers earn. I noticed this major salary inconsistency when I compared my salary at my old job with the salary of a public school teacher.
Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” . This statement is not unexpected because all trail blazers from our history books such Mandela, John F. Kennedy, and Theodore Roosevelt have addressed the importance of education. However, comparing how our politicians and governors treat education ,today to then, may leave our innovators of the past dissapointed. One of the elements of how we fail to put forth effort into making sure education is a priority is teacher income. Teacher’s salaries should be based on expertise, experience, and quality. Having better teachers will encourage students to think critically and inspire change, to thrive and succeed. A a a a a a a a a a a a a
A significant problem is the amount that school teachers get paid. The average amount that teachers get paid is 45,000 dollars. This wage is pretty low compared to what all teachers do. Teachers are giving knowledge to the people who will be the future Neurosurgeons, doctors, and all other jobs of the future generations. I believe their annual be about $65,000. The teachers are being so underpaid while the real people who should be underpaid is the people who make Common Core!
I believe that we are losing teachers for many different reasons but will lose more if they are penalized because of non-performing students in the classroom. Teachers do not have a six digit salary so, cutting their salaries will not keep them in the classroom. According to (Patton,1922) “Many teachers have already left the teaching profession, and a reduction in salaries will only worsen supply.” As educators, we are required to meet the needs of the children in the classroom by providing them with the education they rightfully
Have you ever thought that one of your teachers has better stuff than another?Well, I might just have the answer as to why. My top three reasons why the Government needs to increase teacher pay are:Double jobs, bad health,Quitting. If you think that teacher pay is fine then i still ask you to read this essay and hopefully this will change your mind.
The moment a child enters the world is a miracle. Birth is a gift from God, and nothing is ever the same after parents experience the unconditional love for their child. Parents have an innate desire to protect their children and offer them the best chance for success in life. The process of giving a child a bright future starts with a proper education. Public school is subsidized by the government and considered a right afforded to all Americans. Teachers are the backbone of the education our children receive within the public school system. With so much importance placed on the role of teachers, it is curious that an evident wage gap exists for educators in America. Teachers are underpaid and drastic measures must be taken in order to pave the way for changes in pay. Public school teachers have the right to strike for better employment benefits.
According to Coulson (2011), the unions of teachers has helped to drive up the cost of a student in the K-12 school system and to protect even those teachers with low performance. Since 1970, the cost of a student in the K-12 system has raised from $55,000 to $155,000, but the performance of the students have declined since then (Coulson, 2011). Where is the rest of the money? I believe that a teacher need to have a
The discussion of teacher tenure and salary has been in news headlines for the past decade. It has stimulated several political debates, but the question remains: Is this an efficient way to retain effective teachers in an education system that some might say is failing our children?
Furthermore, additional compensation would not be received by the teachers. Statistics shown by the USA’s “Teacher Inquiry” showed that sixty-three percent of teachers state that they don’t gross sufficient money to meet their needs. Mrs. Glad Davis, receiver of the teacher of the year award stated on Channel 12 News, “If teaching was my only job, I wouldn’t be able to take care of my present needs.” Let’s face it, money makes the world go around. Everyone needs food, water, clothing, shelter and just a little more. In short, Teachers do a lot for students during the school year and it would be very unfair for them to not receive any additional compensation during the course of a year round school year.
First, teachers don’t get equal pay then gets mistreated by those involved in their work environment like the principle, or more commonly, the students. Generally, with other jobs as well, money is always top of mind. When Kontje talks to employees, she concluded, “These employees want to do better with their money. They know they should be saving for retirement. The know the need to have an emergency fund. They just don’t know where to start.” Money and the economy is a huge stress factor. No matter what job one has, they are constantly worried about how to pay the bills or planning out their spendings, vacations and if there is enough money for it. Although, The American Psychological Association (APA) has released its latest “Stress in America” report, with some good news to report. Overall, average stress levels in the US are trending downward. Nearly three-quarters of the people surveyed said they had stressed about money at some point in the last month, while only a quarter said they are stressed about money most or all of the time. Stress levels are decreasing, but that still leaves more than half of workers stressed. No matter how low stress levels decrease, people will always have stress.
The passion to teach information and pass it along to new, younger generations is one that is quickly diminishing in our current society. Each new generation that comes along into schools has an increasingly bad outlook on actually learning material, but rather just wants the good grade. This attitude in the classroom affects teachers, who are there to be teaching information, not babysitting ignorance. Teachers, they don’t get paid well. This is becoming a known fact. Many teachers now only teach if it is a true passion because the money is not there. Although many states have priorities to certain elements that benefit their economy, education needs to become a priority along with teachers who deserve to be paid more for their crucial impact they have on this country’s future generations to come who will one day be running this country.
As I stated earlier, we all know that teachers are not in education for the paycheck. According to Shelly Field, the average salary for a coach or teacher ranges from 27,000 dollars to 80,000 dollars (Field 1). This number rises and lowers due to the location of work, the type of school, and the size of the school. For example: In our district (NISD) the head football coaches from all three schools make over 100,000 dollars annually. The reason for this is the fact that High School football in the state of Texas is
