1.1 Explain the function of assessment in learning and development To meet timely a required predetermined standard with evidenced learning. Unlike the course work we were required to do at school which when marked showed the standard we had achieved. Assessment learning breaks down the required knowledge into bite size pieces which are topic specific, when completed and assessed each piece must contain all the required criteria to evidence the learners understanding. In my experience timely assessment during this period gives feedback to learner and assessor on progress, giving confidence to the learner that they will meet the assessment standard.

This is why assessments should be an ongoing process throughout the learning experience. Assessments are not only there to assess a learner to sit an exam to test a learner’s knowledge of the subject matter but to:

Assessment for learning helps to identify strengths, weaknesses and areas in which extra support may be needed. Learning assessments helps teachers create action plans and plan and prepare lessons and activities. It is important to involve the pupil with assessment for learning by asking for feedback, areas in which they may have found difficult and also praising their achievements. Giving feedback to a pupil that has met their targets is important as this helps to build confidence and self esteem. Discussing targets and learning objective with pupils prior to lesson and providing simple demonstration helps them understand gives them a clear understanding on the expectation of their work. Acknowledging the pupils achievements in the form of positive feedback and displaying their work gives a sense of achievement and acknowledgement of their efforts. Upon looking for the meaning of “Assessments” on the NAEYC website, I came across several different reasons to way it is important. Assessment is defined as the measurement of what students are learning. Student achievement is defined as how well they’ve mastered certain target skills. It is up to the parents not just the caretakers or teachers to help with the development domains in children. Ongoing assesssments should happen throught the year with using the four square domain sheets that I recommended . Programs conduct ongoing child assessment to determine if certain strategies are needed to meet the child’s specific need(DHHS,2010) It is about coming together to provide one framework in order to better the lives of our children in their early childhood stages.

Assessment is an essential tool in the early childhood classroom. Teachers are always assessing students in the classroom using informal assessment and formal assessment. According to Copple (2009), stated that assessment is “the process of looking at children’s progress toward those goals. Thoughtful attention to assessment is essential to developmentally appropriate practice in order to monitor children’s development and learning, guide planning and decision making, identify children who might benefit from special services or supports, and report and communicate with others, including families.” (p.44).

When I think of the word "assessment" it reminds me of when every four years in school I would be required to take a evaluation test because of my learning disabilities. There are many benefits of observing and assessing young children and I believe that the most important benefit is that you can intervene in a child life if you believe they need help. If we did not have the option of assessing children then more than likely a lot more children would run the risk of not being diagnose with learning disabilities and other problems that might come up. The word assessment has always been a scary notion for as long as I can remember. For most people test taking is a frightening concept. Even though assessments make children less confident and is stressful, assessments are important to children’s education because they help get them ready for collage, prevent children from moving forward without the help they need and assessments prepare children to become good test takers.
