Communities in an online space have changed drastically since the rise of web 2.0. Web 2.0 refers to the current state of the World Wide Web. The previous version Web 1.0 allowed users to only read, material in a linear format online. With the introduction of web 2.0 it gave anyone the tools to read and write information online (Oreilly, 2007). It is the reason why social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Reddit exist. It allows user to communicate on an instant level. Web 2.0 increased the popularity of blogging, forums, i.e. online communities as anyone was able to participate on them (Oreilly, 2007). Web 2.0 has given people all over the world the tools to create and take part in communities based around common interests. Platforms such as reddit have taken advantage of these tools and have given people the ability to invent new forms of communities which are now a staple part of the online experience.
Reddit is community based platform which was created in 2005 and is one of the largest community based platforms on the World Wide Web. Around 7% of adults use Reddit with 78% of users saying they receive their information about the news on Reddit (Michael Barthel, 2016). Reddit functions as a social news community based networking service, and news website where registered Reddit users can create/publish material, such as text posts, links, and images making it a community based, online bulletin board system (Rob Tornoe, 2013). Reddit introduced endless
People do not realize the immense impact social media has on their lives. Social media first impacted people’s lives with the invention of the telephone in 1890. Following this, the radio entered many homes in 1891; this was the beginning of social media. During the twentieth century, computers and the Internet began the modern rise of today’s social media. UseNet, in 1979 was a virtual newsletter, which began what people think today of as modern social media. When home computers became popular during the 1980s, such sites as relay chats took off. Then, in 1997, the first true social media site , Six Degrees, came about: “It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today” ( “Complete History of Social Media: Than and Now”). Although social media has some positive effects, social media has changed the world for the worse because it negatively affects politics, privacy, and bullying.
The second major trend to be aware of is the virtual community - a social network of individuals who interact with each other without the constraints of geography, time zones, political or economic situations, weather, or demography all that matters is that they are able to come together to form a culture in which they
The drastic enhancements of technology have lead this generation to what we know and what we are used to. Since the late 90’s social media has drastically changed and upgraded. In 1997 the first recognizable social media site, Six Degrees was created. It was for users to upload personal photos and communicate with strangers and friends via social media. As we entered the early 2000’s more sites began to appear. Some which are very popular and still used to this day such as Facebook and Twitter. There is a vast variety of social media sites but they all create and allow an environment for individuals to blog and communicate with friends or
The second concept I want to talk about is virtual communities. Virtual communities are social groups whose interactions are mediated through information technologies, particularly the internet. Like modernism, virtual communities are very dependent on technology and the internet. Since science and technology has advanced in the past decade, people don’t need to go to different places to meet different people and can meet others over different social media platforms or even video games. Sometimes, those people met over the internet can become very close friends. For example, I play a lot of video games and I have acquainted myself virtually with many people playing those games. Some of them I even ended up meeting in real life and are still friends with today. Virtual communities have become such a social norm, that soon, people will have friends all over the internet. I think the aspect of virtual communities is good for society, because it allows people to have a greater awareness of other cultures all over the world. With more insight of how other societies and cultures operate, there is a greater chance to expand one's own social
Web 2.0 has forever changed online communication and communication in general. Reddit has opened up new ways to communicate and be a part of communities. These communities are now so integral to our modern culture that they are used for more than just people discussing interests online. Reddit has given has given content creators, business men, and politicians among others to manage and monitor community activity. Filmmakers/television executives use these communities to monitor the fan base of their respective media. They monitor these communities to look at fan feedback, to see what fans like or dislike about the media they are associated with. This is common in television shows as television executives need to know what fans are thinking about the show overall or the season currently airing so they know what to improve on or what the fans want. An example of this is a television executive for the television show ‘Arrow’. The executive Marc Guggenheim has an active Tumblr and Reddit account and responds to comments on sub reddits and hosts AMA’s (ask me anything) to actively engage with the ‘Arrow’ community. This helps keep entertainment media alive and for shows in particular it helps keep fanbases active with weekly releases of shows. Shows such as ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ have large active communities on Reddit with ‘Game of Thrones’ roughly having ‘465,699’ active subscribers as of last year (Wikidot, 2015). Part of ‘Game of Thrones; success is due to
An online community is a network of people who come together and communicate online, usually because of a common interest or goal. There are many different types of online communities. Some examples of online communities are: email distribution lists, message boards and newsgroups, instant message (IM) services, chat rooms, blogging sites, social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, and online classrooms/school groups. I intend to discuss three of these types of online communities – chat rooms, social network sites, and online classrooms/school groups – and look into the pros and cons of using each of these.
The Internet has an indescribable power to influence, connect, and mobilize the current population. Technological advances are no longer shocking but simply expected. Today’s society has different expectations for all types of relationships. Relationships are now different because the tools used to maintain peer-to-peer connections have undergone a vast alteration. The primary focus is on the Internet and, with that, the development of social media. Social media is a web-based technology that transforms how people communicate by enhancing interactive conversations. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, which
The internet was created in 1983, but it wasn’t until 1991 that the World Wide Web was created. Over the next few decades, the internet, as well as social media, continued to develop in ways once unimaginable. The term “social media” describes two concepts
Within a span of 20 years, social media has erupted and has taken over. In 1997, Six Degrees was created and that was a website to find other friends. From there Myspace was next and that was created in 2003. In 2005, Facebook and Twitter followed and those sites are widely used by millions of people today. In the short time span, the social
Social network sites (SNSs) such as such as Friendster, CyWorld, and MySpace allow individuals to present themselves, articulate their social networks, and establish or maintain connections with others (Ellison, 2007). These sites could be used for work related situation, romance, connecting with individuals with shared interest, or creating a connection amongst college students. Facebook enables its users to present themselves in an online profile, accumulate ‘‘friends’’ who can post comments on each other’s pages, and view each other’s profiles (Ellison, 2007). Individuals can write on the wall of friends, send private message, comment on posts, as well as chat via instant messaging. Much of the early research on online communities assumed that individuals using these systems would be connecting with others outside their pre-existing social group or location, liberating them to form communities around shared interests, as opposed to shared geography (Ellison, 2007).
Web 2.0 is a term describing changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. The term became notable after the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end- users utilize the Web. Basically, the term encapsulates the idea of the proliferation of
The creation of the Internet brought many changes to the human experience. People today use the web for a variety of different things making the Internet a useful medium in creating and promoting trends. The rise of digital media has brought a new means of information dissemination and now provides society with resources such as news portals and social media platforms. Social media or “Web 2.0” is a term to describe websites that allow social interaction with the added functions of sharing and the creation of their own content. Web 2.0 sites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook have impacted the lives of millions of users worldwide and are now embedded into popular culture. The emergence of Web 2.0 and
Web 2.0 is the internet that allows correspondence between people, companies, and countries. The initial stages of the internet allowed users to receive information from one aspect that was to receive. Web 2.0 allows for data to transfer from the sender to the user and vice versa. Technology today requires companies to open the channels of networking and social media to survive. Web 2.0 has generated consumers that raise the bar for companies expecting to satisfy the customer. The author states, "Web 2.0 also represents opportunities for those who understand and master
Another driving aspect of Web 2.0 is user-created content. Before, the web was maintained by geeky individuals who knew how to write the code needed to make the site work. This left probably about 90% of the population just able to fetch web sites and not create them themselves. With Web 2.0, however, users are able to easily upload videos, pictures, and stories with ease. YouTube quickly rose as the number one video-sharing site in 2006. Photobucket currently hosts more than 7 billion images on its servers. It's this freedom of expression that has led to the birth of thousands of online communities. People no longer have to turn to the news channel to find out what's happening in the world, because it appears on Twitter the minute it happens. Anyone can upload a video on YouTube and become an instant celebrity, with thousands of people subscribing to your channel and watching your videos. Some sites even allow you to turn video views into small income.
Web 2.0 is the new name given to the second generation of the web. Before Web 2.0, there was web 1.0 which was the first stage of the World Wide Web. The Web 1.0 was made of web pages that were connected all by hyperlinks. Web 1.0 was a static of websites that didn’t provide many features as Web 2.0 does now, such as edit, delete, write content or collaborate with one and another. No interactives were provided by Web 1.0. However, Web 2.0 is where users have many interactives features which allows the user to do more than just read only; web 2.0 allows users to share information online. Web 2.0 allows the user to read, edit, change and share contents on the web. Before the Web 2.0 existed, the only person who could edit, delete, share the content was the owners and the users could only read the content.
