Ikedi O. Onyemaobim (Onyemaobim works for the Los Angeles office of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard and Smith LLP) illustrates that on August 9, 2014 at 11:54 a.m., Michael Brown was spotted leaving a convenience store with a companion. Surveillance cameras in the store showed Mr. Brown stealing cigarillos before leaving the premises. At 12:01 p.m., Officer Darren Wilson encountered Mr. Brown and his companion walking down the middle of the street; he ordered the two teens to move to the sidewalk . . . Officer Wilson testified that it was at this point he recognized that Mr. Brown fit the description of the suspect in the convenience store theft . . . Officer Wilson testified that Mr. Brown reached into the police vehicle and attempted to take his
One community that stands out the most for the conflict between law enforcement and their community is Ferguson, Missouri. On August 9, 2014 Darren Wilson, 28, a white Ferguson police officer fatally shot Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African-American male (McLaughlin). This case started one of the biggest uproar the nation has ever seen between community and law enforcement. When the incident first occurred there were many pieces of information missing to paint a scenario of how and what occurred between Brown and officer Wilson. Apparently Michael Brown was walking home late at night when officer Darren Wilson and Michael Brown got into a confrontation that lead to Wilson shooting Brown, the case goes
On August 9, 2014 Officer Darren Wilson with the Ferguson Missouri Police Department was on his way to a reported strong-arm robbery at a local convenience store in the city. While on his way, he observed two African-American males walking in the middle of the roadway (#1). Officer Wilson realized the pair matched the description given of the suspects from the robbery call in which he had been dispatched. While still in his patrol vehicle, Officer Wilson drove up to the males, and began speaking with Michael Brown. Officer Wilson told Brown to not walk in the lanes of traffic (#1).
Upon my arrival, I observed a white male standing outside, Officer Welch then order the suspect to ground who was later identified as Kevin George Plato (Suspect). Mr. Plato had a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath at this time.
On 05-11-16 at approximately 1800 hours, I was dispatched to a concerned citizen in the justice training center neighborhood. I arrived at 1810 hours and a white male adult with a mustache approached me, later identified as W01-Walker. He said his neighbor was being a nuisance because the couple living there are always arguing. W01-Walker said, “It is a necessity that you go talk to my neighbors” and “this neighborhood was livable before they moved in.” I radioed dispatch that there was a possible domestic violence dispute next door and told W01-Walker to stay inside. My partner arrived and we went next door.
Upon arrival, I made contact with the complainant, who identified himself as Gregory Climi by his Florida ID card. Climi advised that he is a driver for Lyft and was assaulted with a handgun by one of his passengers. Climi stated that at approximately 1:40 A.M. a request for a ride came in. Climi advised that he picked up the suspect at approximately 2:04 A.M. at 8602 US 19, Port Richey (Checkers). Climi stated that the suspect wanted a ride across the street to the Mcdonalds located at 8527 US 19, Port Richey, so he could confront an employee there. Climi advised that the suspect stated that he was upset
On August 9th, 2014, Michael Brown, an innocent young black teenager was murdered in Ferguson, Missouri by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. Since the dashboard cameras are not installed in Ferguson police cars, the clear evidence of what happened is still unclear. But based on the testament of Brown’s friend Johnson who was walking with Brown, they were ordered to move off the street onto sidewalks by Wilson driving a police car, and there were struggles between Michael and Wilson through the car window. Then Michael, without carrying any weapon, was shot six times by Wilson to death, even after Michael had raised his
Just before the time of the shooting accident, Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson went to Ferguson Market and Liquor Store where later it was reported he had committed a robbery. According to Johnson 's attorney, Freeman Bosley, Michael was involved in shoplifting (CNN). The police released the video from the store’s surveillance camera that show the image of Brown and his friend robbing the store, and Brown grabbed the store clerk and pushed him. Brown stole a box of cigarettes from the store. The videotape showed that Brown behavior was contentious.
American Citizens rely on the police in communities to protect them , but racial profiling has led to countless people living in fear, casting entire communities as suspects simply because of what they look like, where they came from, or what religion they practice. (ACLU) This demonstrates that racial profiling has changed the ways we perceive the police, who are the people that we should not be afraid of, and it has caused us think differently of them and be afraid of them. Despite the training given to avoid discrimination, officers sometimes still rely on cultural stereotypes and act on their perceptions of a person's characteristics, such as their age, their race or their gender. (NIJ) From this, it’s shown that the training that the police are given are one of two things; either the training is not very good, or the police don’t give regards to their training. The police have also conducted random searches of innocent people without the hard evidence to prove they have done wrong. For example, the Colorado Springs Police pulled over two brothers, Ryan and Benjamin Brown, in 2015. They were driving a block away from their home in a predominantly white neighborhood. A taser-wielding officer ordered Benjamin, the driver, out of the car. He was handcuffed and searched without cause, then detained in the back of the police car, again, without cause. Ryan Brown had recorded the arrest on his phone. Benjamin Brown cooperated through the arrest and there were no weapons or contraband found in the car, the lawsuit says. In the lawsuit filed by the Denver law firm of Killner, Lane, & Newman, a statement that was made said: “Despite a video recording that clearly showed the officers drawing their weapons without cause, refusing to identify the reason for the stop, and using unnecessary force, an internal affairs investigation concluded that the officers’
The day of the shooting, Michael brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson walked into a Ferguson convenience store. Surveillance cameras captured a man
As the author describes story, “Chief Thomas Jackson says Darren Wilson, the officer who shot Brown, did not know Brown was a suspect in a strong-arm robbery that happened moments before the shooting. Wilson stopped Brown for walking in the middle of the street” (par. 45).
The summer of 2014 in Ferguson M.O. there was a black teenager by the name of Michael Brown. Brown was shot by a white police officer at the end of that summer. When Brown was shot this caused a worldwide debate between a person's race and the policing that is done in America. After the occurrence of this shooting tensions ran high in Ferguson when it comes to race. According to BBC News, from the time that officer Darren Wilson confronted Brown, it only took three minutes from the confrontation to when backup came and found Brown dead. At the time of the shooting Dorian Johnson who was a friend of Brown’s and was there. Johnson said that everything started at the window of the police car. An unnamed witness said that officer Wilson tried to get out of his car but was pushed back in and punched. Wilson reached for his gun, and Brown grabbed it from him. This is what caused the gun to go off inside the car. She said that when Brown ran off he turned around to taunt Wilson when he was told to freeze. Brown then started to run at full speed toward Wilson, and that was when he was shot dead. The unnamed witness’s story matches the one that officer Wilson gave in front of the St. Louis grand
This whole thing all started at 11:47 a.m. officers Wilson responded to a call for a baby with breathing problems and drove to Glenark Drive, east of Canfield Drive. Around three minutes later and several blocks away from their, Michael Brown was recorded on camera stealing a box of swisher cigars and was seen pushing away the store clerk on camera. Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson, left the market at about 11:54 a.m. At 11:53, a police dispatcher reported a stealing in progress at the Ferguson Market and the description that the dispatcher gave was a black male wearing a white T-shirt running toward QuickTrip. At 11:57, the dispatch describe the suspect as wearing a red Cardinals hat, a white T-shirt, yellow socks, and khaki shorts, and was with another male. ("Shooting of Michael Brown."n.p.)
On July 6, 2015, at approximately 1147 hours, I responded to 3706D Mt Vernon Ave, The Meter Wizard LLC for a robbery from person. Upon arrival, I spoke to Mr. Robert S. Cohen the victim in this case. Mr. Chon reported that a dark skinned black male entered his business and displayed a handgun. The suspect only said “give me your money”. Mr. Cohen gave the suspect his wallet and 9 dollars cash. The suspect ran through the alley in an unknown direction of travel.
Firstly, Michael Brown is not just an innocent victim as the African American community portrays. Shortly before Brown’s encounter with Officer Wilson, a 911 call had been placed from the Ferguson Market and Liquor store on 9101 Florissant Avenue reporting a robbery. Unfortunately, it is unknown whether or not he had a juvenile record. Brown’s record was not released because Cynthia Harcourt, the St. Louis County juvenile office’s attorney, said the “court of public opinion does not require the release of juvenile records” and that “simple curiosity was not an adequate reason to violate the privacy of Brown and his family” (“Broken Record”). Not releasing Brown’s records creates bias in favor of Brown, leading people to assume that the shooting was racially motivated.
In the summer of 1994 an Illinois woman’s buzzer rang at her apartment complex in Waukegan. She went downstairs to check after nobody went upstairs to her apartment. As soon as she reached the door downstairs, two men forced her into a dark colored sedan, kidnapped her, and raped her. Distraught after her attack, the victim wandered until she ultimately found a Seven Eleven close by and the police were called. When the police arrived, the victim said she was attacked by two Hispanic men that looked to be in their mid-twenties and a bit taller than her height of five feet and seven inches. The car that she was forced into was described as dark colored, older, having four doors and tinted windows. The victim’s boyfriend saw Angel Gonzalez’s car in the apartment complex parking lot and it matched the characteristics that the woman used to describe the assailant’s car. Police later stopped Gonzalez’s car and the victim acknowledged that the car was the one she described. She was then asked if Gonzalez was one of her attackers, and she was certain that he was, despite her being in the backseat of the police car while he was in front of it. Not only was he not close enough for her to get a clear view, but he also had facial hair and a birthmark, both characteristics that she did not use to describe her attackers. This led to Gonzalez being in police custody for interrogation where they did not allow him to sleep. When he was interrogated, he
