Outline the New Right view of the role of education. 20 marks
New Right theorists agree with Functionalists that industrial societies should ideally be organised as capitalist societies and that education systems should operate to meet the needs of capitalism but these New Right theorists also argued in the 1970s and 1980s that in practice state education systems were organised inefficiently and that both their formal and hidden curricula were not geared to meeting the needs of industry. New Right theorists argued therefore in favour of education policies which would enable effective schools to expand at the expense of ineffective schools as a means of improving overall standards, in favour of increased emphasis within the formal

The new right view believe that the current education system isn’t functioning because it is run by the state. In state education systems, politicians use their powers to influence what children should study. For example they encourage compulsory studying of history and also they chose what kind of school we should have ignoring the needs of individuals. This is using the ‘one size fits all’ rule leaving the consumers with
Education is considered a right in most first world countries and compulsory public education has been in effect in the United States for over a century. So, why do governments have trouble assigning a purpose to public education and experiencing student growth across the board? How can schools change their approach in order to ensure that their students are ready to create their own opportunities? Scholar and politician Winston Churchill notes in his autobiography, My Early Life, “But now I pity undergraduates, when I see what frivolous lives many of them lead in the midst of precious fleeting opportunity. After all, a man’s Life must be nailed to a cross of either Thought or Action. Without work there is no play.” (p. 113) From this it can be concluded that Churchill believes the purpose of education is to teach students how to be active in their community along with the importance of judgement and choice, in order to further the success of their country.
Theories provide the foundation for educational practices, and many of them exist. While I consider my personal theory or philosophy of education to be one that is something of an ever-changing conglomerate of ideas, I realize that some of my guiding principals are directly attributed to well a well established theory.
“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s we rob them of tomorrow.” John Dewey once spoke this quote to remind his audience that if we keep teaching new generations the same curriculum as we did 30 years ago, our knowledge would never expand or grow. It would simply stay the same. Education is one of the most important tools that is applied to help us young adults succeed, it also teaches us the importance of life and helps us face the challenges in life. I would like to succeed and go through the schooling of a Secondary Education teacher and teach 8th grade English so I teach my students as well as I was taught in school. With that said, knowledge is gained through education that helps enables an individual's’ potential to be the best that they can be. The role of teaching and what has been taught in school has played a huge role in many people's lives in the past generation.
All school systems has its own history, successes and failures. The framework that teaching and learning takes place within the educational system consist of many things such as what will be taught, how it will taught and how it will include all students regardless of learning ability. Imaginary County Elementary will devise a technology plan for the school years of 2014-2017. Imaginary County Elementary will set a plan in motion that adheres to the National Education Technology Plan as well as the State of Alabama Technology plan.
I believe school is exceedingly important. In Mark Mathabane’s story Kaffir Boy it states, “I want you to go to school, because I believe that an education is the key you need to open up a new world and a new life for yourself, a world and life different from that of either your father’s or mine,” (78). This quotation is important to me because, I believe an education is key and you can change your whole life by having an education. An education will help you learn necessary skills for life. Such as, learning to build relationships. Building relationships is significant for any job. Many businesses will get referrals from happy customers that they have developed a relationship with.
The purpose of education is being debated for many years. Many ideas and theories have been developped about this purpose. However, this paper's aim is to focus on two specific approaches in education. First one is the approach of teaching how to think and the other one is the approach of teaching what to think. In my opinion, education teach people how to think rather than what to think because this approach increases the awareness of questioning, improves thinking skills, enhances creativity and broadens human's point of view.
“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare it for today” said Malcolm X. As we all know, education is the one of the key features for the development of any country. To obtain the versatile workers the government should take care for the education of student from an elementary pupil to college student. A majority of high developed countries aim to retain the ministry of education and educational system sophisticated and updated. For example, in some countries such as China, Finland and Turkey, teachers and professors are immensely respected and in most European countries a teacher is regarded as a highly paid profession. To upgrade the
The second explanation is the ‘systemic’ approach which places responsibility on the system for poor learning outcomes. The process of trying to include people by ‘normalising’ them is a product of ideologies which aim to contribute to the labour market (Preece, 2001, p. 213). People who are believed to have no perceived economic value are disregarded instead of value being attributed to their own individual identities and experiences (p. 213). McIntyre, Volkoff, Egg, & Solomon (2004, p.18) suggests that equity is a highly variable concept, dependant upon the systems that support the state and in order to achieve equity the ideologies underpinning society need to be examined. These ideologies are reflected in the institutions that provide education and are often not conducive to inclusivity. Considine, et al, (2005) describe
responsibility, to foster sustainability, by providing skills of lifelong learning and building up the nation’s future by providing quality education to the young learners.
Everyone knows that education is very important, but not everyone understands why? Education is essential to help kids develop the skills necessary to prepare them for the modern world. Furthermore, education endows kids with the ability to be independent, creative, and innovative learners, which can help encourage kids to take on greater tasks. However, most schools lack the support for greater student success because they have outdated textbooks, bad school facilities, and no student autonomy. Therefore, holding back students from realizing their full potential and rendering them vulnerable to challenges. In order for students to become greater critical thinkers the federal government must reform the educational system and increase school funds so that schools can replace older textbooks with new ones, improve educational facilities, and permit greater student autonomy
Looking at the viewpoints from different cultures around us it's easy to see not everyone has the same standpoint about education and the purpose it. stands for. Some believe that the purpose for having an education is so that you are able to work. To others education is more than just working for a degree its expanding your horizon and growing to be the best you can be. To me education is the most crucial part in one's life. Without education whether it be public, homeschool, private, etc. How are we expected to grow? There are many ways to educate someone but I do believe without school it would be impossible to motivate anyone to think about their future. Education is meant to make sure we succeed no matter what we do. It's impossible to say what would happen without education but it's easy to see most people wouldn’t even bothering setting goals and dreams without it. Education gives us motivation to seet the bar. higher and achieve the things we want. The more we learn the more we can set our minds to achieving what we want.
It is clear that colleges are starting to fall behind on teaching the basic principles that should come with an education. It is shocking that my underlying fear of society not being taught enough to survive in the real world is indeed true. With public education being degraded to only useless common core principles, it is almost like society is purposely being dumbed down for the benefit of the elite. These essays did, in fact, educate me on the valuable importance of the humanities along with STEM education as both are beneficial when joined together. I have learned that the humanities are actually the key to creating a well-informed, educated person with the ability to think for themselves. I have always had questions regarding the structure of education and its higher cost when I was younger, moreover, I will say that these six essays have answered the questions I have always pondered. These essays were beneficial in convincing me of the value of an education by answering my long-awaited question about education, convincing me of why the humanities are important alongside STEM-based learning, and that our society is on the path to a downfall if these problems involving the lack of the humanities are not solved soon.
We know that you expect us to protect them from bullies, and bad words and bad thoughts and bad self-esteem, and we do our best. […] We do know how you love them. We love them. But we don't know how to promise their safety in the face of such random rage. We will build barricades, and we will take precautions, but the rest is unbearable. We cannot bear the unbearable, either.”

The education system is a fundamental structure that exists within the nation state of New Zealand. Through power and goverance of the education system the government of New Zealand influences and molds education to suit its current and future purposes of the state. Thomas Hobbes a western political philosopher synthesized the theory of a social contract which frames the development of the state and it’s continuing dominance over it’s citizens. Hobbes’ theory on the social contract can be applied to the education systems of New Zealand with the changes taking place in policy currently. Michel Foucault theory of governmentality further develops the state’s rule of education by supporting the intervening nature of Hobbes’ social contract in everyday lives using the theory of a ‘body politic’. By creating a ‘body politic’ Foucault suggests that docile bodies are formed which enact the states interests through their actions. Hannah Arendt another political theorist critiques Hobbes’ and with that Foucault theories of state power. Arendt’s arguments bring another perspective of the state and its relationship to the economy and education. She also highlights the inequality within the state that forms because of the economy especially when examined through the lens of
