Government is defined by Oxford Dictionaries to be “The system by which a state or community is governed”.
In my own opinion, the role of the government should include maintaining law and order within the state/country, defending the country (national defense), protecting the rights and freedoms of the citizens, and when decision-making, taking into account the needs of the citizens and what the effects of that decision will be on the citizens/affected group.
The role of the government is and should be different depending on the state/country, as the needs of each state/country and its citizens would differ. The Government of Canada should focus on foreign policy as many issues involving foreign policy directly affect many Canadians and the interests of Canada. In the past, Canada was seen as a generous contributor to the economic and social development of poorer countries, but more recent cutbacks to aid budgets and the lack of involvement in UN peacekeeping operations have brought down Canada’s positive image surrounding the topic of foreign policy. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s words in an interview with Peter Mansbridge when asked if his government was at least considering some form of formal inquest, inquiry, or investigation on the topic were “Um it, it isn’t really high on our radar, to be honest”. During a meeting in Calgary in March of this year, Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt told First Nations leaders that up to 70% of murdered aboriginal women were killed by aboriginal men, and cited only an unpublished RCMP report. The chiefs questioned that statistic because a previous RCMP report did not indicate perpetrators’ ethnicities. Other comments made by Valcourt that were rude, demeaning, blaming, and condescending according to Steve Courtoreille, grand chief of Treaty 8 First Nations, had no evidence behind them, and when challenged, he did not provide any proof. If two of the people who have the most authority involving Aboriginal rights are not listening to Aboriginal people, not taking action, and instead blaming it on the people affected instead, not only is it unjust, but also a violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms which states that “Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular,
