As the PSAC is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year I think we should look back at many of the accomplishments. The PSAC has achieved many gains for its members including safer working conditions, better wages, equal pay for work of equal value, benefit coverage for same-sex partners, and rights for disabled workers. While priorities of the PSAC tend to shift according to the priority concerns of the membership, and according to changes in the workplace and the labor force they also tend to stay the same. The core roots of the PSAC and of labor unions in general are that workers deserve a say in the conditions of their labour. In my view, while although maybe not new to some, one element I have not heard much of is the affordability of onsite quality childcare and flexible work arrangements in the workplace. This element would be a relevant issue for the young in our membership and help in securing their involvement. …show more content…
While maybe not as affordable for people on day shift it is more easily obtainable as the public sector caters to the Monday to Friday, weekends off day shift worker. As for the variable shift worker who requires evening, midnights, and weekend care the affordability and access to child care is almost unobtainable. As I live in a city with a large amount of variable shift workers for example in the auto industry, nursing and law enforcement and other cities like mine, the need for variable child care is of great importance. Parents like mine search high and low for quality child care often overburdening relatives and for some family is not even available. Because of the requirement for alternative child care providers outside the 6:30 am to 6:30 pm hours of operation time frame, they are often are unable to work overtime or not able to pursue or accept higher positions. And even less offer available child care on
PSAs are not worth the cost. In the passage, PSAs: Not Worth the Cost, states "Moralist say that the subject matter of PSAs is something that parents and guardians should be teaching children." I think its something their parents should teach their child about inappropriate and illegal things because their parents are someone they can trust and not someone they don't know. Its important to learn from somebody you trust.
In fact, recent studies have shown that the cost of daycare in some states has exceeded the average tuition and fees of a public college. The cost per week per child is at its all-time high for childcare and that it is making it hard for parents. Paying $100-$350 a week for childcare sounds outrageous. The cost of having an infant child in most states is higher than having a 6 year old. Most childcare facilities charge families by the kids’ ages, the younger the child, the higher the cost. Honestly, daycare facilities are making a killing because people are having babies that need care, but they have to go back to work to support their family.
Over the past five to six decades women have been entering the workforce in ever increasing numbers. Some enter because of financial need and others for professional and career goals. Whatever the reason, the result for the children is the same; they are in daycare. Many

Honestly, daycare facilities are making a killing because people are having babies that need care, but they have to go back to work to support their family. Some parents are concerned about their kids spending so much time in daycare “on average, children spend over 35 hours a week in child care (Aguliar).” People may argue that 35 hours a week is too long for a child to be in care, but honestly it isn’t, as long as the kids are all
If parents are working full time and the child is in our care all day, the parents may require the child to have a sleep or rest period throughout the day. This will enable the parents to have more time to spend with the child in the evening when they are at home. Depending on the parents requests really comes down to how much rest time the child will have in the
There are many different programs in the United States that provide extended day childcare for working parents. Programs such as the 6 to 6, YMCA, etc are available in the morning before school and in the evening after school. Although these programs provide parents the much-needed care of their
Americans that work too many long shifts affect the lives of the people around them too. For instance, one statistic from a Family Matters Survey done by The National Partnership for Women & Families in 1998 found that, “70% of working fathers and working mothers report they don’t have enough time for their children”.Another statistic from this survey reported that over 80% of Americans found it diffcult to balance their work life and their personal life. In fact, it is estimated that around 11 million children age 5 and under spend time in a form child care facility every week(Child Care Aware of America). It is also estimated that children whose
In the 1930’s a huge factor lead to the passage of income continuity, the Great Depression. During the Great Depression scores of businesses failed, and many workers became chronically unemployed (Martoccho, 2015). The Great Depression brought the demise of smaller businesses and forced many to work in the larger factories. Subsequently, these conditions lead to the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FLSA). Since 1938 the federal government has broadened the scope of the FLSA in 1947 twice through the passage of two acts: Portal-to-Portal Act of 1947 and the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (Martoccho, 2015). These acts are depicted to address the child labor provisions, minimum wage, and overtime pay.
As I got older, the knowledge that my father negotiated with his very own employers in order to ensure that his coworkers would also reap the benefits the entire union fought for affected me on personal a level; to know that the man who drove me to school and bought for me school supplies each year also carried a responsibility to his co-workers made me rather proud. However, despite the fact that I grew up the daughter of a Union Steward, I also grew up as a teenager in today’s society: one that no longer suffers from such rampant corruption that induced misfortunes such as illegal instances of child labor: a calamity also solved by a committee aiming to better working standards. My view of labor has always been through rose-tinted glasses thanks to modern times; I really only knew of the exploits that my father had experienced from what he told me, forms recounting various union related news lying in heaps on the dinner table, and snippets on the news or the lightly-touched upon topics in my Consumer’s Education
Workers in the United States now have rights that protect them from the abuses of the past. According to Pamela M. Prah, a veteran reporter for CQ Researcher, “Unions were created in an era before employment laws required safe working conditions, a minimum wage, unemployment benefits or protections against discrimination”(713). Employers are now required to have a list of workers rights accessible to all of its employees, and if an employer violates any worker protected right they are subject to fines and penalties. Unions have been an influential part of society during the later part of the nineteenth century and throughout the twentieth
Reasons for choosing this above topic: Firstly, the FMLA is intended to balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of families. Secondly, it is essential for the development of children and the?family?unit that fathers and mothers be able to participate in early?childrearing, and the lack of employment policies to accommodate working parents can force individuals to choose between job
Most daycares are open 6 am- 6 pm, and are closed on various holidays. This prevent parents from being able to get positions at night, as well as forcing parents to take additional days off that they cannot necessarily afford. Also, weekend daycares are all but nonexistent. To compound the issue is the cost of daycare. Daycare costs for a four year old child range from $344 per month to $1,472 per month around the country (US News & World Report, 2016). Younger children cost more than four year old, and of course there is the issue of having more than one child who is daycare aged. In fact, “In a recent survey of Parents readers who use child care, 84 percent said that finding affordable,
Day to day, lessons are being learned and being brought to our attention. Life is a classroom, and the individuals living that life are constantly learning. Furthermore, if an individual take the time to pause for a second and allow certain aspect of things to sinks in, they wouldn’t make the mistakes they normally make. No matter what age you are, something can be learned, and any individual from whatever age group can be the one teaching that lesson. Life isn’t easy; it can make us or break us. Moreover, have a guide or some sort of laid out law/rules
To be guaranteed that the shoe you just purchased was not produced by child. As Child Labour is not an acceptable practice in our society. Canadians do not want for our children to suffer in regards to social conditions due to our jobs being relocated to an International location, and our jobs being performed by children whom are sustain their family. Our society views the parental role as being the one responsible to support their children, while the children are becoming educated to achieve a better standard of life. Unions are the collective voice of Canadians who know the only way change can happen is in numbers! Unions not only protect their membership but also society, it is imperative they continue to have their day now and into the future! Or else we will resume back to the master-servant relationship again.
Worker’s rights are one of the hot issues debated in the United States today. It is also a
