The seminar had an emphasis on Health, which had multiple professionals whom gave us their insight in their concentrations of work. The presentation benefited everyone in the audience, in which they gave us some of their personal advice to succeed as students and in our own personal lives. The panel consisted of Dr. Patricia Carter, Dr. Jaime Davis, Dr. Reginald Baptiste. All three of these doctors brought up the University of Texas slogan, “What starts here changes the world.” They added to it, by saying changing the world cannot happen if you are not healthy, then linking both “changing the world by being healthy.”
In Dr. Carter’s presentation, she discussed that she explores the use of Behavioral Sleep Medicine to decrease insomnia in family
Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is a recent framework developed to address the dysfunctional cognitions and behaviors that contribute to poor sleeping patterns. Insomnia often presents as a comorbidity to a medical or psychiatric disorder, but may also be an isolated diagnosis. According to research studies, benzodiazepine-receptor agonists (BzRAs) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are the two most effective therapies for treatment and management of insomnia. And while both treatments are beneficial for short-term management of insomnia, CBTi produces long-term sustained benefits with no side effects thus being more advantageous that prescription drug use only. CBTi involves five components: stimulus control, sleep restriction, relaxation training, cognitive therapy and sleep hygiene education. Because CBTi is a fairly new approach, trained professionals may be difficult to find; creative delivery of therapy through telephone or Skype appointments may be necessary.
For second part of reading response, I choose to report on Promoting public understanding of public health article by our professor Stephen Bezruchka. I really enjoyed reading the article he wrote about how people in the America are being less healthy than those people in other rich nations. Promoting public awareness about this topic should be high priority for all Public Health majors. Health is the most important part of human life and it surprising to me that people in America are not really doing anything to change it. Solving this problem need individual supports and public supports.

Greenberg, R. (2010) the authors talk about the need for changes in the health education system.
In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be
I interned at the health Wellness and Prevention Service Office, under the administration of Tricia Hughes. There was more than six authors included in the creation of this article. It is also associated with North Carolina State University and was published in a well known journal, The American Journal of Health Education. For the previous reasons, I view this article as a reliable source.
While interning at the Nueces Public Health District, I assist organized programs and events such as health fares, Go Red for Women, and wrote monthly health articles and post daily health articles on their social media sites. I educated people on health care concerns to widen their horizons on the ill effects of not maintaining a healthy lifestyle and encourage them to adopt positive attitudes towards their personal well-being.
I pursued my undergraduate career – Human Development and Family Studies, Health Education and Promotion, and Nutrition – with the idea of wanting to broaden my understanding and experiences in the realm of health. A myriad of factors can influence a person's health decisions. I now understand how the power dynamics within a family unit can determine the choices an individual makes in regards to their health. I have seen how a person may have the best intentions of making healthful choices, but with limited availability of resources, that person is unable to be their healthiest self. Throughout my experiences, I have learned that health is a complex interworking of an individual and the relationships, community, society and systems they belong to.
Being a part of and chairing these events, gave me a greater perspective on the health disparities and needs within the community. They allowed me to provide education, resource information and services for underserved communities. In addition, I was one of 35 people throughout the United States selected to participate in the Healthy People Penn State Conference which was held in this year at Pennsylvania State University. This was an all-expense paid trip for students with high academic achievements who are committed to research and
In the article ““Keeping the healthy, healthy: Keeping the unhealthy to become healthy” due to the increase in healthcare spending, everyone can change
I believe that I possess important attributes that will not only further the Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine mission, but also bring diversity to the campus. Inequality in both availability and quality of health care is an issue which I place great emphasis on. Having spent a week in Panama providing clinical services, I have witnessed firsthand the discrepancies in care that exist between urban centers and rural areas and rich and poor economies. Of particular concern to me is the lack of education and knowledge regarding healthy habits and lifestyles in these communities. This is something that we as prospective health care professionals can change, and I plan to focus heavily on these issues as an aspiring medical student
The challenges of balancing work, school, and a social life can sometimes seem like a major task. However, in spite of these challenges the six dimensions of health are the keys to living a quality and prosperous life. My objective is to identify three of the six dimensions of health, and explain why they're my strongest. Next, choose one of the remaining six dimensions of health and explain why it needs improvement. In addition, I will discuss how I will make changes to improve that health dimension in the future. Finally, I will discuss what I want to learn in this course to
Every individual deserves to receive compassionate, safe and quality care regardless of race, age, gender or income. The focus on patient centered care is essential in every community. Every patient and family member deserves equal treatment. The Community Health Field Experience course work was an eye opening experience, the research and each interview I experience. The education of the lower income individuals is lacking, education is essential, every community member should receive the educational information needed in preventative medicine not only for my topic of obesity but in healthcare in general. Education should start in childhood and continue through-out life. The Community Health and Population Field course enabled me to look
