Pennsylvania German Architecture Pennsylvania German architecture is very unique to Southeastern, Pennsylvania. It spread through Pennsylvania; however, it is most prominent where it originated in Southeast, Pennsylvania. Most homesteads consist of a main house, along with domestic outbuildings. A domestic outbuilding is “an auxiliary building on a property, and one that is functionally associated with the domestic aspect of the homestead, that is, with the work and other activities that take place in the area of the dwelling.” (Domestic Outbuildings, p. 66) The domestic outbuildings that existed on most Pennsylvania German properties, in addition to the main house, was the springhouse, the bakeoven, the root cellar,

An outdoor privy would allow for an enclosed space to use the bathroom. It would cover one or more toilets. The idea of an outdoor privy is not unique to the Pennsylvania German culture and architecture. It has been an idea that has been used for centuries in many different cultures and is still used in developing countries today. Most outdoor privies were basic structures with lightly framed structures; however, some of them were of higher class like the outdoor privy at the Tulpehocken Manor. Tulpehocken Manor has “a large and elaborate Victorian privy, of frame construction and sporting a tall cupola ventilator.” (Domestic outbuildings, p. 85). These more elaborate outbuildings were not as common. Bibliography

Architecture in the 1950s was representative of the conformity caused by the Cold War. McCarthyism and the Red Scare were some of the major sources of this conformity. McCarthyism was the persecution of innocent people assumed to be communist and the forced conformity that the practice aroused in American public life. As the government grew more and more concerned with the development of communism in the United States, the country became extremely against communism and with the help of John McCarthy, the government set out on a mission to find all the communists hiding in the depths of America; many people were questioned and hundreds were either killed or exiled, even those that were wrongly convicted. With the threat of being removed from
In Gottlieb Mittelberger’s, Journey to Pennsylvania in the Year 1750 and Return to Germany in the Year 1754, he vividly depicts the harsh realities of what those traveling to America experienced through his own venture to the western hemisphere. He also provides a summary of different aspects of the land and society of Pennsylvania in the early 1750s. Because his work is a first-hand account, the reader gets an accurate depiction of these important events in history.
Art in Nebraska and the Great Plains has been shaped by its diverse groups of inhabitants. Czechs are one of many groups who added and enhanced artistic endeavors inside Nebraska and the Great Plains. Czechs have a rich history of artistic pursuits. Famous musicians such as Dvorak and Smetana, and the country’s long theatrical history have shaped Czech individuals. The arts are in many ways at the heart of Czech culture. Czechs brought this mindset with them into Nebraska and the Great Plains. Czech immigration, during the 19th and 20th century, contributed to the culture and arts of Nebraska and the Great Plains as a whole; especially through music, theater, furniture making, and the Wilber Czech festival.

The “Pennsylvania Dutch” emigrated from Germany in 1700s (Source 5). They followed the idea of religious freedom (Source 5). William Penn gave the promise of religious freedom which allowed hope (Source 5). In the 1800s, most Germans tried to escape persecution from Europe (Source 7). In this case they settled in multiple places across the United States. Most settled in Pennsylvania. Lancaster County (Source 2), Punxsutawney, and northwestern Pennsylvania (Source 1). Others settled in the Southwest (Source 5). Furthermore “Pennsylvania Dutch”
Ellis discusses the long-standing silence that the government observed over the slavery question. Shortly after the dinner party, some Quakers presented petitions that called for an end to the African slave trade. Members of the House were dismayed to be presented with such concerns, and Southern representatives were adamant that the question be ignored. They insisted that the Constitution specifically prohibited Congress from passing laws that abolished or restricted the slave trade until 1808. Unfortunately, the matter was soon removed from their control altogether.
Unlike the gorgeous public buildings the workers homes were very similar. Each house had two stories with five rooms, including a cellar, pantries, and closets. I learned that Pullman’s intentions weren’t fully true. Though public facilities were marvelous, working homes were very bland. Cite: Huffman, Nicole.
Colonial city and industrial life was very important to the American Colonies in the 17th and 18th century. Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Charleston, as key trading centers, were very busy before, during and after the war. These were a major part of the colonies.
An iconic building standing in the middle of small town Ferdinand, Indiana, the Gohman Buildings’ story is truly a mystery to some. The imagistic fireplace and wooden entryway remains an icon in the minds of many previous visitors and regulars alike. Resting close to one of the two stoplights in the small historic town of Ferdinand, Indiana , most local residents know of this old building however; few know the story behind the red bricks. Most recently housing a Mexican style restaurant, a blast to the past reveals the Gohman Buildings true intentions up until the end of the Covered Bridge.
Pennsylvania has a wide variety of beautiful historical buildings that reflect many different styles of architecture. They include historical homes, unique covered bridges, government buildings, and breathtaking churches. Some of Pennsylvania’s most recognized examples of great architecture are Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts located in Philadelphia. However, the one building that I think of when it comes to great architecture is The Pennsylvania State Capitol. The Pennsylvania State Capitol building, located in Harrisburg, is a great example that represents a variety of architectural elements and a rich history.
The Government of Pennsylvania is the government structure of the state of Pennsylvania as established by the Pennsylvania Constitution. The Pennsylvania General Assembly is the state legislature of Pennsylvania. The legislature meets in the Capitol building in Harrisburg. The General Assembly is a bicameral legislature.
Question 1. Choose an architect or practice whose work is covered by or relevant to this course and discuss critically one or more of their design projects or drawings or urban proposals as precedent case-studies. Selectively situate this work in relation to their body of work, and against the practices and concerns of the period. Focus on the architectural qualities of a specific key aspect of the design of the projects. Selectively consider how they might relate to the historical situation, cultural values, theoretical concerns and design practices of the time. This may involve a selective analysis of compositional design practices, material fabrication production and the experiential reception of built outcomes of the projects.
The Neoclassical architecture consisted in the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. One of the earliest phases of the neoclassical architecture grew alongside with the Baroque Period. The architecture is generally evident in England, where there are buildings like the St Paul’s Cathedral, The Royal Observatory, and The Royal Chelsea Hospital. Large-scale structures, Ionic pillars, and huge Renaissance-style noodles represent the Neoclassical architecture. Many took inspirations from simple shapes like spheres, cubes, and cylinders so they could provide a more abstract classicism. Two well-known architects of the neoclassical period were the British architect Robert Adam and American architect Thomas Jefferson.
It is nearly impossible to study American history without a mention of Pennsylvania. The state is central in American history not only because of its location on the East Coast, but also for the long duration of time that Europeans have inhabited Pennsylvania. Always central to early American history, Pennsylvania was of the first American colonies, birthed many of the founding fathers, and even housed Philadelphia, the first capital of the United States. Furthermore, Pennsylvania had many of America’s firsts, such as the first national bank and the first major road. Pennsylvania was able to see much of the change that occurred throughout America’s history and shared many
“Moorish architecture” is the Western term used for describing North African and Spanish (Andalusian) Islamic architecture. Moorish style architecture in America was largely fantastical rather than archaeological and often combined with many other styles. This type of architecture in America was seen as very exotic and many of the buildings constructed in this style were non-traditional. The details of the early Moorish Style were usually blended with forms from Egyptian, Turkish, and Indian styles. This blending occurred before there was much archaeological awareness about Moorish Styles. During the nineteenth century, these styles were referred to as the Oriental Style, while Asian styles were referred to as Chinese. The Oriental Style
