Personal Narrative: The Merritt Theory

“In about five double spaced pages, compose a narrative essay about an event, a person, or an idea that has influenced or shaped you the most.” I sat alone in the library questioning myself. Who or what can I write 5 entire pages about? I could not think of a topic to save my life, and to make it worst, I have never been a great writer. How could I compose a five page paper, when it’s nothing less than challenging for me to even write five complete paragraphs? Thoughts consumed my mind for what seemed like forever until I heard the bell for second period ring. I gathered my stuff, and headed to sign out of school for the day. No matter where I may begin, I can always make the best of it and take it even further. After I snapped back into the real world, Mrs. Merritt was telling me how she was afraid that I could hinder myself from many of the opportunities, and that I needed to step out of the box because there is so much more than what I could see. “I’m not even going to cry for you,” she joked as her eyes began to water and face began to turn as red an apple. I may not have shown it, but I was so touched. How could someone that I have only known for a limited period of time care so much about me? I wanted to cry myself, but I have never been the type to show emotions, so I held them in. My heart was warm and my mind seemed serene for the first time in a while. No, I didn’t think no one cared about me, but it was how someone who works with hundreds of kids on a daily basis, could care about single little me so much.
Before she shooed me out of her office, she told me to pray that God will lead me in the direction that is right for me -- that was the second rule. If no one else knows, God knows. Prayer is the key. This wasn’t the first time Mrs. Merritt had advised me to pray, but it was the first time that I realized that prayer could be the best solution in this situation.
