In my previous English courses, I have learned to rectify problems that had always occurred prior. My biggest problem was always lack of organization, which caused me to struggle to write effectively, as I did not know where to begin. I realized that reading and writing is important because in my chosen career, there are many instances where I will need to be able to read and write coherently and accurately.
The first english class I took was an English 1 college course, before that, I never did any significant writing ever. The reason being, I had no idea where to start or how to take my thoughts and place them on a paper comprehensively. I learned rather quickly that organization is key. Maybe for some, sitting down and simply writing, works well, but that was not and is not me, and probably will never be me. I found that being as organized as possible creates the most effective essays. I always make an outline. I do not even think about writing until I have laid out an outline. Again, outlines can be simple, and for some that is easier as it lends more freedom. However, for me, I again go the incredibly detailed route. I like having as much information in my outline that it essentially is my essay and all I have to do is translate bullet points into connecting sentences. I like to have more information than I necessarily need, because that ensures that I have enough for my essay and I can always exclude information in the end, whereas if I find myself lacking information
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
To be honest, I have never really enjoyed writing that much. Even though I don't enjoy the activity, years of english classes have made it easier and more bearable for me. In addition these classes have taught me numerous techniques and tips for crafting a fine paper. Even though I have a few good qualities that make me a decent writer, I believe that my greatest one is my ability to plan and structure essays. When I write a larger paper I start with an outline that plans out my introduction, main points, sub-points, and conclusion. This outline helps me organize my thoughts, so when it comes to writing my actual essay the process is faster and my ideas are coherent and easier to understand. Outlining my papers before I write
The importance of learning how to read and write is called, literacy. “Oh my gosh! I want to rip my hairs out!” I told myself this as I was writing a research paper in the eighth grade. Reading and writing used to feel like a chore, until one day when my English teacher saw me struggling and was determined to help me enjoy it if not even love it.
In this class, The Writer’s Mind, I have learned alot and have struggled a lot as well. Throughout this semester I have wrote some papers that I truly liked and a few I didn’t like at all. Therefore for this portfolio I added the ones I enjoyed and were proud of and excluded the ones I didn’t like, which for me, was the memoir. I personally didn’t like my memoir piece because I thought it was unorganized and didn’t stay on topic, unlike the other pieces I have chosen to include.
As a writer, I identify as a disorganized writer. Usually High School English teachers hand out a template of how an essay should be composed. I never understood the teacher’s outline. Setting up the exact order of the paper and then writing it like in a science lab isn’t how my mind works. My concept of an outline is just writing the paper as the thoughts pop into my mind. When I write, I like to let my fingers flow within the thoughts inside of my brain and after finishing the paper, I try to fix the mess, which acts like a bandaid because there is no way of fixing the essay. My weakest link in the art of writing happens to be grammar. English, a complex beast, has a vast amount of rules and I’m not a fan of remembering anything. Commas
A learner’s ability to communicate effectively through writing to his/her target audiences is a major prerequisite for academic success. It is also a major pillar of success in one’s career across all areas of practice. Even though, writing clearly is critical to one’s academic and career success, I have not always loved writing. In fact, for a long time I despised writing. At one point, I had a feeling that my writings skills were bound to remain stagnated throughout my life. However, time has proven that I was wrong. My attitude and outlook towards virtually all genres of writing has changed positively. The various helpful methods I have been exposed to by my English teachers through different grades have helped me to improve not only my comprehension and interpretation skills but also my writing skills in general. I contend that, the improvement of my comprehension skills and appreciating the importance of thinking clearly has facilitated the improvement of my writing skills.
The first tactic I was taught in writing was the process. It starts with planning and leads to several drafts. Assignments and standardized tests tend to give cute, little diagrams with innovative ways to plan. I discovered as long as I plan, it does not matter how I plan. I function best writing out key points on paper and turning them into a first draft. Planning is a step I find essential to the writing process.
This is something that I have discovered and learned more about whilst taking Comp. I. Too often, I would have an influx of thoughts and ideas on what to write about and would begin typing every thought at once rather than organizing these thoughts using graphs or outlines. In doing this, I found it difficult to put every idea where it needed to go in order for the paper to have clarity. From the knowledge I obtained, and mainly because it was required, I started to begin every essay with a formal outline. By starting the paper with organized ideas, made for a much clearer way of writing that
When I write an assignment, from a simple analysis to a research paper, I always start with writing an outline. The outline helps me with the flow of my writing and reminds me where my work will take me. The outline keeps me organized in my thoughts and aids in the comprehension of my writing; it will start out very broad and eventually becomes very specific so the essay is easier to write. I have gotten into the habit of writing outlines when I would write any assignment during my sophomore year of high school. My teacher would require us to write outlines for major writing assignments which developed my habit to write an outline for any assignment. After the outline, I begin writing the assignment and edit while I write. I do this by briefly
Before the essay is written, I like to now, due to this class, use an outline. This is much more effective then my past method, which consist mostly of writing all of my information in bullets, and linking them all to a few main ideas. The outline allows me to organize my thoughts in an orderly fashion and this reflects through my paper because it is also orderly. For
Academic writing has always been a struggle for me. I was not consciously aware of how often I used English in my everyday life. Excluding essays, the other material I’ve written would be texts, emails, notes, lists, social media posts, calendar entries, comments, assignments, answering questions, ideas, questions I have, and thoughts. I deplore things out of order and with no clear meaning to them, which is what I thought of English for a long time. After a plethora of writing assignments, I began to discover the structure in writing. I am a structured writer because I take pleasure in planning, I enjoy formulas and, I adore order.
My educational experience is one amazing thing I would never forget. My parents gave me an experience of a lifetime that I would never let go and continue to expand. It was a gift of a great education I could have tossed away but instead I took advantage of it and it expanded my intellect and made me more independent. As a young girl my parents always told me, they wanted a great educational experience for me. They said no matter what it took to get me into good schools, to have a great education they will do it. My parents worked very hard to give me the opportunity to be in private school my whole life since pre-school. They always told me to work hard, be bright and be bold. The educational level I had being in private school my whole life was amazing. What was amazing about my education level is that I was able to take all college prep. classes, I took an AP Spanish class, my teachers were always on top of us to hand in work in time, essays in my English class were based on a college level writing. It was amazing because my school expanded my mind more on a college based level.
Communication is the delivery of information between multiple groups, it is very necessary to have effective communications in the workplace because everything people do at work results from communication. Work efficiency and productivity is the key to success in the workplace, they can enhance the understanding between employer and employee, and high efficiency and productivity come from effective communication.
To dive into this idea further, I decided it would be beneficial to get to know myself better and the desires God has placed within my heart through the completion of two personal reflection exercises. One of these two exercises required my response to the question, “If you could convince someone to pay you to do what you love, what would you be doing? What might this mean for your vocation(s)?” In answering this question, I started to wonder about my aspiration to be a chemist (currently, leaning towards forensics chemistry). I responded:
Throughout life it is important to take time to reflect because it is so easy to become tangled in our worries, stress, and busy schedules. Reflection can differ depending on the individual. For example, reflection to one individual can be accomplished through attending mass and having time to pray to God. For another individual, reflection could consist of participating in meditation or yoga. No matter how it is done it can be beneficial to one’s health and well-being. Reflection consists of taking time to carefully think and so it is necessary to make time for it especially since we are so use to a lifestyle of constantly going and never stopping. Personally, I try my best to reflect each day. In order to make goals for myself at the
