Yoga? I’m Down, Dog Under all normal circumstances, a field full of children lying motionless in a field would be cause for alarm, however this particular scene occurred under the best circumstances. On a balmy October day in 2010, a group of girls reclined blissfully in Savasana beneath a whispering willow tree as the last cotton wood tufts drifted in the breeze. I’d been going to the Boys & Girls Club every day afterschool for about a month. One afternoon, a volunteer guided a group through a basic yoga class. Although it was probably only 30 minutes in length, it would serve as the catalyst for one of the most important chapters in my life. Little did I know it would eventually lead to my yoga teacher certification and beyond! Following my first post-yoga-bliss, I became hooked. The afterschool leader, Sarah, could place her full palm on the ground while I could barely touch my toes. She inspired me; she was an adult who truly inhabited her body. As a freshman, I began attending classes at a local yoga studio. They were a disaster at first. I felt totally lost in the fast-paced environment. I didn’t have …show more content…
Not in every aspect of life, but as a service to others through sharing personal strengths. Although generally a confident person, I experienced many normal aspects of youth such as insecurities, and the tendency to follow adults. This was a challenge I faced (and conquered) during my teacher training. I was by far the youngest of the class. Who was I to guide a seasoned and wise 60-year-old? Everything “clicked” when I realized my youth and inexperience did not diminish my value as a teacher. I walked into my final evaluation with nervous butterflies and a chant in my head of “you’ve got this!” After all, the wise yogi knows they have unimaginable potential for growth, while a foolish yogi assumes they are an expert. Growth, not perfection has become my highest goal in
Part one of the career research assignments we were to choose three personal strengthens that I would bring to the work force and I choose that I am perseverant, team oriented and have youth supervisory skills. I choose that I am perseverant because after all the things that life has thrown my way I still have managed to stay on the right path and not succumb to my environment. This would be beneficial to an employer because I will not stop until I have met the goal that I am trying to obtain. To me it does not matter if the goal has many obstacles in the way, if it needs or has to be done I will get it done. Also I selected that I am team oriented; being basketball player for of my life I have learned the skills of being part of a team. Through
Personal strengths are abilities, talents, and characteristics that God has given us. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well”. God has given everyone amazing characteristics that most people would describe them as. Even though most people don’t like talking about their own positive characteristics, we all have amazing gifts and talents. When I was talking to my friends, they gave me three characteristics that they see in me. The abilities that God has blessed me with are, a strong athlete, a good friend, and servant-hearted. I have thought about what these mean to me and I am going to describe each of them.
Upon receiving a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Haskayne School of Business (HSB), I aspire to graduate with marks of excellence. Through constant perseverance, I aim to increase my communication skills to make me an excellent team player and become a reliable leader. As a result, I will have a vast network of business contacts.
I am applying for section leader because, I feel I can give back to the program. This program has grown me as a person exponentially. My personal strengths are that I have endured allot. Being in scouts has taught me there are 2 parts to being in a group. First you are a follower, you grow as an individual and learn new skills. The second part is being a leader, to now take what you have learned over the course of time and show it, and teach others . I feel as if I have grown as an individual following others, that I can now take the next step into the leading aspect of an organization.
Nothing can prepare you for what this class has to offer, however, the only way I made it out alive was to leave the writer I thought I was in the past. There are challenges along the way that tested my strengths and showed my weaknesses. Also, I was able to realize the type of writer I am and the writer that I am not. English 1101, teaches the elements of writing allowing studentto understand themselves as writers; with the hope that by the end of the semester the students will be stronger writers. I have reached the end of English 1101 and it has done everything that it is supposed to do. I have learned everything that I was supposed to from the basics like what a good thesis statements acuallty can be. How to correctly insert in-text citations, punctuation and put my thoughts clearly onto paper. Having confindance in my own writing and understanding that everyone has a different out outlook on life and I have to respect that. This class is all the easy things enhanced giving a pefect dimenstraction of how high school is nothing like college. All of these things lead me to grow into the writer I was destined to be but I had to make it to this point to understand that.
In the interview, i asked one of my friend a few questions about myself. the first one was what are my strengths. the answer to that was curiosity and humility. From this I was expecting one strength to be curiosity which tells me that I would enjoy travelling in the future and learning about new things. Although humility, i was not expecting that strength only because i never noticed that in me and i never thought that strength was one of the things people noticed most about me. this strength added another career option for me that involves me understanding others issues and putting myself in their shoes. One career suited for this would be a psychologist. my second question was what are my qualities, in which the reply was honest, understanding,
Ever since I was a child, I have had a strong bond with my family. I have always felt that I could talk to my parents and grandparents about anything. Over the years, they have given me advice that I have always taken to heart. When I was five years old and going into kindergarten, my mom told me to treat and view every single one of my classmates as if they were the most special people in the world. As a freshman in high school, my dad told me to always follow my gut and to stand up for what I believe in. I was given perhaps the biggest piece of advice from grandpa during my freshman year in college. He told me that if I worked hard, then everything would work out in the end. After completing my first week of my teaching credential program,
Introverted: I am considered to be an introverted person. I mostly prefer to spend time alone than with others or in groups. However I love to work with other people. Working with other people can allows me to learn new things, but most of all I live to think. Thinking not only requires me to develop deeper thoughts by reflecting internally but it requires me to listen to others when they speak. This may allow me to come off quite in most cases but really it offers me more room to think critically.
Two personal strengths I possess in making adaptations are patience and fast-thinking. One of them being patient. I noticed the struggle the EL student had with certain words and I waited hoping he would sound out the word. I have learned that not all the students will have the right answers and learn at the same pace. In addition, the other strength I learned of myself is to be a fast-thinker. I need to figure out what strategy to use to make sure student understands what the instruction is. I will apply my strengths to differentiate among student that are low and high in learning.
I desire to make a difference and positive impact in the world in a way that will spread compassion, aid in healing communities, promote and provide the necessary tools to enhance the well being and quality of life for individuals and families who are impacted by social disadvantages. I take great pride in my strengths, as well I am accepting of my weaknesses. I am strong minded, outspoken, ambitious, rational, yet I possess a great sense of optimism. By possessing these qualities, along with a charismatic personality, strong problem solving and analytical skills, they all help me with assisting and interacting with a wide range of personalities from individuals and helping in creating solutions to problems. Therefore, MLT partners, such as
As a student, I have a lot of academic strengths. For starters, I’m an outstanding writer. I’ll spend as much time as it takes to produce a top-notch paper. For instance, I wrote an essay that ended up getting published in the Tulsa World. Another good example of my writing skills has to do with my ability to research a topic. In my senior English class, I spent many hours researching for what turned out to be a rather lengthy paper over various aspects of campaign finance reform. My paper was given the highest grade in the class. My paper was also submitted to the all-state research paper competition. My paper won third place in this competition.
By taking the Strengthsfinder survey I found that my five strengths are; achiever, belief, responsibility, communications, and consistency (Clifton, Anderson, Schreiner, 2016). I will show how I am going to utilize these strengths in my life.
At the age of fourteen I started to practice yoga, and because of what it has been able to do for me I continue to practice almost daily. It all began as I wanted a way to relieve everyday stresses with a form of exercise that I could do at home on my own schedule. I started my journey by purchasing a yoga mat and VHS showing the basic poses and technique to practice at home, while the mat is used to keep sure footing during practice. Although, I have to admit initially following along with the pleasant woman on the TV screen, I felt the poses she asked of the viewer were just like regular stretching. The positions seemed almost too simple to being doing any major changes.
StrengthsFinder 2.0 picks up where the first version left off, and it is designed to provide the latest discoveries and strategies for application. (Rath, 2007)
In order to test the psychological and physiological benefits of utilizing yoga as a stress management technique, I decided to start doing hatha yoga on a daily basis. Hatha yoga is an alternative style of yoga than emphasizes physical exercise and mental health, with the goal of balancing both aspects in your life. In a study by Luu and Hall (2017) they found that both hatha yoga and mindfulness in conjunction saw significantly improved results on both mood and executive functioning (Luu & Hall, 2017). I then downloaded “Yoga Guru” an app that includes hatha style yoga onto my smartphone, which provides videos and acts as a personal trainer to get started.
