Every day during our daily routines when we go to school or work we’re surrounded by many people, some of which we don’t know anything about. We take everyone around us for granted and don’t actually realize the struggles and internal conflicts going on within each other in our lives at home and what not. Teen suicide is a very real and serious issue and the 3rd leading cause of death for adolescents, so it’s not to be shrugged off. The worst part about it is that the causes for it can be prevented. Home abuse, depression, and bullying are some of the major factors in which a teenager could decide to take his or her life. One of the ways that a teen can be driven to take their life is from physical and emotional abuse at home. Some parents are highly irresponsible and addicted to drugs or alcohol, which can result in domestic violence and household abuse. Teens who are sexually abused, mostly girls but boys as well, become more likely to attempt or commit suicide. In fact, a study in the journal, “Suicide and Life Threatening Behavior”, a study that tracks sexual assault with suicide revealed that 27.1% of girls with sexual assault history have attempted to commit suicide in 2009 and 2011. For boys with a history of sexual abuse, it’s higher; at around 33%(“Sexually Assaulted Teens at Greater Risk of Suicide”).A higher percentage for boys could mean that there’s shame, and maybe trauma associated with the abuse and something a boy wouldn’t be comfortable sharing with
We live in an age when many of us struggle through hardships. There should be more support in a school system for mental health, so students function better, to have better futures to stabilize their development and grow in life. First, to do this the school systems should better resources and allow more access to those options. Environments in schools should make the students attending it to feel safe and welcoming. Schools should take in account of people's disabilities and restrictions, before making assumptions about why they are having a hard time. Another factor to consider is that there should be more personal reactions towards the students. Finally, personal relationships in school with positive adults should increase.
Suicide is a prevalent cause of death among America's youth today. Every day more than 1000 teenagers will think about suicide and eighteen will be successful in committing it. It is an ever-growing problem that can be described as unnecessary and uncalled for. Knowledge and understanding are key factors to preventing teenage suicide. The problem will usually originate from a period of depression, either as a medical concern, or simply because of a saddened
“Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem”-Phil Donahue. Suicide is a controversial topic that may be gory and uncomfortable for students to learn about in school. However, in my opinion, it is necessary that teenagers are exposed to this topic, so that they know of events that may affect their peers, and themselves. Discussing this matter at school, informs students that this is an increasing affair and something should be done. Suicide is an appropriate topic to discuss in a Grade 9 class, as students are now mature enough to handle such topics as they appear in many other lessons taught in class.
Teens who experienced traumatic events in their childhood are more likely to commit suicide. According to The Mayo Clinic ( 2017), studies show that teens who are victims of divorce, rape, or abuse are at a higher risk of attempting suicide. However, teens with mental health issues are most likely to commit suicide. Depression is the leading cause in health issues among teens. Deriving from home life, alcohol and drug use, friendships, school, and other attributes.
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the tenth leading cause of death among Americans, accounting for 41,000 deaths in 2013. More than half of all suicides are related to firearms.” Many people have bad thoughts, thoughts so horrific in terms that they want to end their own lives. It’s not just the thoughts that they have, it’s also the different situations they have going on in their lives. In the book: It’s kind of a Funny Story; it expresses the thoughts of one of the characters “I didn't want to wake up. I was having a much better time asleep. And that's really sad. It was almost like a reverse nightmare, like when you wake up from a nightmare you're so relieved. I woke up into a nightmare.” This character is expressing, the intensity of even being awake. They would rather kill themselves than to go on living the horrible life that they may lead. Suicide is always controversial, many people believe that suicide should never be an option. Although for some of us it is, for me it was at one point. Earlier this year, I was on the brink of taking my life. I was so fed up with everything, I was a mess, and i couldn’t take it anymore. The drama with my dad, and his new girlfriend, then all the stress from school and my two jobs. One day, I had enough, I couldn’t take it anymore it was too much. I got out of work, and I had a bad day at work, the customers were so rude, and I felt helpless. I went to the kitchen, and I grabbed a knife,

Suicide is defined as taking of one’s own life and it is an issue that should be given all attention to. Teen suicide has been talked about in every source of media and it still continues to have a harmful effect in todays generation. In the United States the eighth leading cause of death is suicide, within developing teens, suicide is the third leading cause of their deaths (NAMI). This issue is relevant to the world because so many teens struggle with depression, bullying, or abuse and kill themselves over it. The website American Foundation for Suicide Prevention states that “Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. Each year there are 44,965 Americans that die.”

Suicide is reaching epidemic proportions all across the globe. What is causing such an outbreak in young adults? Most people have heard about the get help hotlines and the advertisements associated with suicide. Although we 've all heard about it, not much is being done about it. Johnson states the facts about suicide, “claiming 39,518 lives in 2011, or more than 6,889 more than in 2005” (10). This small piece of information goes to show just how much suicide has increased in the last few years. Besides being the number 10 cause of death among all ages in the U.S., it is the 2nd leading killer of adolescents, or “people between ages 15 and 19” (Peacock 1). Also, the number of completed suicides only touches the surface on the dilemma it truly is; this is because there are 25 suicide attempts per every suicide (731). What goes unnoticed is that suicide is on the rise for a number of reasons including mental illness, bullying, social media, and high expectation perfectionist teens.
Day to day, teens suffer from peer pressure, problem from home, and stress from academics. Despise their status in the environment, majority of high school students refrain from acknowledging the presence of their reality. The problem in most situations in that students feel shut in, trapped in a never ending misery. How do they cope? What are their ways of dealing? Most students live in denial. Others have friends to confide in. For the devastating part, most students are not as open to these ideas and it leaves them with this alternative: suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause in teens the ages 14 to 19 within rural underserved areas. Suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal thoughts, were surveyed in over 12 high schools and it was found that in the past year, thoughts of (SI) were not shared with peers or even adults in the pursuit of receiving help or support (Pisani, 2012). Because a student spends most of their day at school, it is ideal for schools to provide realistic opportunities and school-based programs to assist with the suicide among the youth. The Surviving the Teens Suicide Prevention and Depression Awareness Program designed four 50 minute session or each high school student. This presented information in regards to factual information about depression, suicidal warning signs, suicidal risk factors and myths associated with suicide (King, 2010). The program provide coping strategies for everyday life, referral sources if feeling suicidal, and how to recognize

Suicide should be required to be taught in schools. Suicide is one of the biggest problems now days. People and parents might say suicide is too explicit to be taught and talked about in school, but it’s reality and we have to face it because it’s a really big problem today in our society.
“Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between eleven and eighteen years of age” (“Introduction to Teen Suicide”). According to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary: suicide is the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally. Meaning that when someone takes their life they are fully aware of their decisions. These decisions are clouded by the rational part of the brain not maturing until the age of twenty five. Looking at this fact any decision that a teen makes are affected by their brain and morals not being fully developed yet. Teens are very perceptible to bullying and peer pressure causing emotional damage to the young victim. Sadly, these constant pressures
After a PBS broadcast called ‘College Can Be Killing’ aired on television, reveling how colleges and universities ignored student suicide to save their reputation, studies were conducted to show what causes suicide ideations and attempts (Brandt, 35). These have led to the results of showing what can be linked to suicide, such as risky behaviors. Since the 1950s, the suicide rate among young adults have tripled, due to numerous factors. (Cerel, 46) After the influence of parents and other students, universities have begun to change how they handle suicide on campus. New studies were then created to see what factors play into the increased suicide rates. These new studies have changed the conversation of student suicide overtime by
“Of course, we know that not everyone agrees with assisted suicide, but people might agree that one has the right to it, even if they're not themselves going to exercise it,” -John Rawls. Assisted suicide is only allowed in four states in the United States, and another state allows the act but with the approval of the court. Since, many people oppose assisted suicide it is not allowed in too many places. If you were in extreme pain and knew there was no cure and that your life would end in the next few months wouldn’t you want to end your life earlier so you wouldn’t feel so much pain? The only problem is you can’t unless you move somewhere that allows the act All people should have the ability to make decisions regarding their life care and end of life decisions.
