Philosophy of Education
I spent some time looking back upon my time in elementary, junior high and high school and thinking about all of my favorite teachers, and what exactly made them such outstanding, inspiring educators. I came to several conclusions. A good teacher is one who can not only show a student how to add four and seven, but also help them see why it is important for them to know how to do so. A good teacher is one who can explain to a child the process of photosynthesis while at the same time instilling an appreciation for the beauty of a flower. A good teacher is one who can accept and cherish a hug from a child and conveniently overlook the muddy handprints left on her skirt. I feel that successful teaching is made of

In a successful classroom, great emphasis should be placed on the child's positive actions, rather than only stressing what he or she does wrong, It is important to let students know that you appreciate their efforts to abide by the rules and are proud of them for doing their part.
Love intermixed with discipline is important in that it helps create a kind, orderly environment that fosters every other aspect of successful education. For every one time a list of rules is found in my classroom, I want to hang twenty examples of student artwork, or several brightly decorated bulletin boards that stimulate my students' interest and creativity. I hope my students will understand that my first priority is to care for them and seek their best interests, and because of that I will do my best to give them a safe, fun, an pleasant place to learn the tools necessary for academic achievement.
The next block of the teaching pyramid is understanding and encouragement. An imperative aspect of it is respect for individuality, as evidenced in the progressive philosophy of education. Pursuing the life to empower and educate our youth is the lifelong mission behind most teacher’s motivations to pursue the educational route in their higher education. My practicum placement I gained the opportunity to work alongside Ms. Jennifer Harvey in her endeavor to educate and inspire her first-grade students. In her class, I began to realize the workload and dedication that teachers set forth to help their students succeed. It may seem bizarre to believe how teachers calculate and manipulate their activities and lessons to meet their students' needs best. Consequently, my experience with her and her students, I saw how a connection formulated behind the teacher’s efforts and the performance of his or her students; it was beautiful. Over the course of my ninety-plus hours, I’ve gained more knowledge about how it means to be a teacher and how influential they are to the students than I ever imagined. My life has been influenced greatly by teachers. Since I was a child, teaching is all I wanted to do. My mother is a fifth grade teacher. I have quite a few friends that are teachers. I have been fortunate to be influenced by some great teachers throughout my academic career. I love to be around kids and I like participating in the process of learning. I appreciate learning even today. I enjoy the learning process and hope to one day influence students in the future. I hope to one day become a high school social studies teacher. I enjoy history and geography, and I especially love politics and discussing current events. I like class discussions and letting different opinions express themselves.
My beliefs and values about early childhood education is based upon understanding that all children are unique individuals who need a caring, nurturing, and secure environment in which to grow and develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. In Unit B of The First Days of School, Wong discusses how to increase positive student behavior. In this unit, the author informs us about the five significant concepts that enhance positive expectations. These five significant concepts include, name, please, thank you, smile, and love. In order to have a good teacher-student relationship, teachers will have to practice these concepts.
The Classroom management presentation attached demonstrates my understanding of effective classroom organization and management and behavior management strategies. This presentation demonstrates my understanding of classroom management by stating expectations in the classroom. The presentation was created in using developmentally appropriate language. In order for students to understand emergency procedures, I included step-by-step instructions along with photographs to ensure the students understanding. Within my presentation is a discipline procedure. The discipline procedure included is Class Dojo. Class Dojo tracks student behavior throughout the day with a point system. The students earn points for excellent behavior and lose points when their behavior needs improvement. There is a reward and/or consequence for student behavior. The class, as a whole, can receive points in order for all students to receive praise throughout the day. To ensure student behavior, a report is sent to parents electronically at the end of the day. It is imperative for all teachers to meet each student’s needs to enhance learning. Providing teacher’s support, loyalty, in meeting their individual needs will enhance a school’s chance for success. A supervision and leadership philosophy that incorporates diversity, multiple learning styles, motivational strategies, procedures, and rules that are designed to optimize each student’s abilities that enhance potential and drive a continual need for knowledge. When students are in an environment that is safe, clean, organized, and structured will allow them to focus on knowledge, instead of being distracted. Every student is an individual, with his or her own personality and style. When teaching, I will remember and understand that students are children, not small adults. They will try my patience and understanding, then test the limits of my indulgence.
Education is inevitable. It is all around us because we can learn from virtually anything. When you are cooking, dancing, talking or any other activity you have actually had to learn several things to be able to do them. In the educational perspective, I am a pragmatist and I tend to follow after Dewey's footsteps. The concept of Pragmatism is one that developed in the 20th century. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning should involve real-life situations. Learning becomes more concrete to a student when they apply it to real-life situations, as where learning things that do not connect to them has more of an abstract sense. I began my college education in 1987. I attended two full years and one part-time year before accepting a position with an engineering firm in 1992. I was employed there for the next nine years and was promoted three times. Even though this was a good stable career, I was not satisfied. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I never gave up hope and continued to take a class when I could. In the fall of 2001, I had the opportunity to work part-time and finish my degree. I am so excited to achieve my lifetime goal of becoming an educator.
In order for a society to function, individuals must be productive members of that society. This is accomplished through education. The philosophy of education is determined by society. As society changes so does the concept of education.
The word character can be defined as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Teaching, unlike any other profession, requires character, but I believe it goes deeper than that. When broken down there are key ingredients found as to what makes a good teacher. The phrase, “To be a good teacher”, has no clear meaning if we do not know what makes up an effective educator. Students sometimes need to be shown how to be successful not only in their work, but in their life. Think upon a cookbook for a moment. This item does not just supply a list of ingredients, for how are you to know what to do with them? Rather, it supplies the ingredients needed, along with the application and limitations of how to create something that, when made correctly, in genuinely good. The act of teaching is considerably similar to this idea. True that there is no book in the world that has an exact list of what educators need to do and how educators need to act in order to be effective. But there are books that list traits needed in order to be good, and how to apply these traits to yourself in order to help those around you. Writers John Dewey, William Bagley, Richard Mitchell, and Plato are all people who have tried to give us that list, in order to teach us how to, well, teach! Education what is it? Is it only, how it is defined, as the imparting and acquiring of knowledge through teaching and learning? Is education only something you receive in a school. Education to me begins at birth; a journey that has begun, as you experience new things you learn and grow mentally and emotionally. By the time a child begins school they have learned a multitude of things which include a number of things like walking, speaking, listening this is just the beginning of their learning career. My beliefs are that all children can learn they have a right to be educated and be safe in the environment in which they learning in are, these things are a must.
I believe that every child has the ability to learn, but it takes a good teacher to be able to bring this ability out. This is a role I would like to take. I believe the purposes of education are necessary for the child to live a successful life. In my opinion, the school's goals should begin with providing students the necessary knowledge and experiences to help contribute to our society. And it will be a very important goal for me to help my students succeed any where they go.
