Play: The Surplus Energy Theory And Social Learning Theory

Play is one of the main ingredients in helping a child develop a healthy brain. When we think of play, we think of children developing their imagination and using their creativity as well as their physical, cognitive, emotional and social strengths. Children start to interact with the world around them from a very young age through play. Classical theories go back to the nineteenth century, while modern theories have been around for the last fifty to sixty years. These theories have helped in evaluating children’s development. In this essay I will discuss a classical theory and a modern theory of play and emphasize on the similarities and differences of both, the surplus energy theory and the social learning theory. Our textbook mentions that the main purpose of the classical theories is to “explain why play exists and what purpose it serves”(pg. 34), while modern theories also try to explain why play exists but also explain “Play’s role in different aspects of child development …show more content…

Social learning theory displays the outcome of the observational learning process of children, while surplus energy shows how a child is motivated to play if they need to release energy and play occurs due to surplus energy. The theories of play help us not only get a better understanding of why play exits, but also how play affects children’s development. Once we understand not only these two theories but most of them, we will truly understand why it is important for everyone around the child to promote play on a daily basis. Play doesn’t only and shouldn’t just be video games or movies at a young age. Children should be able to interact with others, not only children but also adults during play time. Play gives children the opportunity to explore and have fun learning, while us as educators and parents should take advantage of the positive aspects of
