Learning Activities: For the remainder of my time with Dr. Kilgore, my objectives are to work with her regarding team building strategies which will aid in the creation of professional partnerships and increase communication. We will also be working on my final objective of articulating a vision for nursing practice.
Analysis – Final Journal During my time with R.K., we will end with the final two core competencies. First, shared decision making, effective communication, and relationship building. Second, knowledge of the health care environment, understanding of shared governance, evidence-based practice, patient care delivery models, and work design knowledge (AONE, 2011). Because of our limited time left, gave me homework to read about TeamSTEPPS training and to identify strategies, skills, and tools that will enhance teamwork. TeamSTEPPS training from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services / Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ). TeamSTEPPS is a program that is intended to increase the safety, quality, and efficiency of health care. This program is built on over 25 years of research on teamwork, culture change, and team training. After doing my research on TeamSTEPPS, I met back with R.K. with what I had found so that she and I could go over my findings. Teamwork and collaboration with other healthcare providers is very important. To function effectively there needs to be mutual respect, open communication, and shared decision making in the best interest of the patient. As a member of a team it is vital to know ones own strengths and limitations, this way patients receive the best care.
Inter-Professional Team Model (PAARP) is used throughout the life cycle of a team and includes 5 phases describing actions of the interprofessional teams: purpose, assemble and charter, align, resource, perform. The division of labor is based on the scopes of practice of team members and takes into account KSAs of team members. In the PAARP model, actions of leadership give purpose to the group, and consistency of action by the leader is essential. Identifying purpose through goal-setting plays a large part in this theory and team members accept the goals of the team as their own and take responsibility for their part in achieving them. In the beginning of this activity, I did not know much about collaboration between different healthcare professionals. It helped me to clarify the meaning of a healthcare team and also to understand the role of different professionals in the team. Different team members have their specific roles and all of them work together to achieve a common goal –healthier patient. They work independently, but when it comes to decision making they seek advice from other healthcare provider in order to do the best for the patient. Not only doctor, physiotherapists, pharmacists and etc. are considered being part of the team. Patients must also be considered part of the decision making process,
As a scholar and leader in the area of medicine, it is imperative to understand how to work as a team to provide the best possible care to patients. “Educators are responding to complexities of today’s medical knowledge by developing educational programs based on current learning theories, such as enactivism, where learning takes place within teams that are actively engaged in clinical environments” (Davidson, Morgan, & Simons, 2012, p. 291). This results in more patients that can place their trust in physicians and nurses who know how to work together as a team.
The recommendations above are strategies that will bring multiple health care providers from different disciplines together, allowing them to learn from each other, collaborate together, and develop a trust and respect for one another. The topic of the article is the influence of a quality improvement learning collaborative program with a team functioning in primary healthcare. The purpose of this article is to study the impact of the learning collaborative program on the growth of interdisciplinary team functioning within participating Primary Health Care teams. The main issue discussed in this article is improving efficiency in a primary health care setting and improving the efficiency of the team; the employees.
