Larry Dossey discusses three eras medicine in his book, Reinventing Medicine. Era I is a time period which began in the 1860’s and focused on the physical body as the reason for illness. The body was treated with surgical procedures and drugs. Era II focused on the body also,

Personality Preferences
(Keirsey, n.d.) My personality is defined as “Guardian” which fits my personality perfectly. Guardians are practical and down-to-earth, but they know how to have funs with their friends. They take their duties seriously, are hard workers and are dependable and trustworthy. They are most comfortable when life is structured (Keirsey, n.d.). I am a loyal friend who like to have fun, but follow the rules. My friends have said I am their “voice of reason”. I enjoy socializing with my close group of friends, but I am cautious when meeting new people. I enjoy watching sports, probably because there are defined sets of rule which allow for a fair turn for each team. I do not like when plans change suddenly. I am a planner and when things change I have to alter my plans.
I believe teamwork is essential in my role as a nurse. I love nursing because it is a structured job. There are policies and procedures to follow, routines to your everyday shift. I am trustworthy. At my job, I am a charge nurse, part of the leadership team that helps to maintain structure on my floor.
The personality type most different form mine is the artist. “The artist will do whatever works, whatever gives them a quick, effective payoff, even if they have to bend the rules” (Keirsey, n.d.). I find myself struggling with this personality because I like to play by the rule, not bend them. I like to take time and assess the best way to do
Through this course, Professional Presence and Influence we, the students/learners, are academically guided to get to know how our professional presence affects our nursing practice. The Kiersey Temperament II Personality Sorter identified traits about myself and how my personality affects my professional presence. Learning about a mindful practice allowed me understand that being mindful can influence my presence. Finally, my environment can, and does, influence my presence and my practice as well as the healing of patients. This is especially emphasized in an optimal healing environment as described by Samueli.
To feel completely human one have to be able to care for themselves and also for someone else in a respected and nurtured manner. According to Dr. Koerner, one consider them self valuable and useful when they are able to contribute to wellbeing of themselves and others that they connect with (Koerner 2011).In all profession, professional presence and influence is a continuous life long process that requires one to first understand their feelings, attitude and understanding of why they choose the
In our practice, professional presence is the foundation on which we establish what it means to be human and to care for our fellow man. To be a nurse and choose the many sacrifices it takes to spend one’s life caring for others requires knowledge of one’s own personal beliefs and values. Our own past experiences with life and how they have shaped us also influence how we relate and treat our patients. These things work together to create our mindful presence. Throughout our years of practice, our experience with patients, coworkers and physicians as well as a growing knowledge base help us develop a road map which we follow in our everyday
I currently work in the logistics industry for the federal government. In this essay, I will discuss how I remain competitive in my industry and how I would present myself to prospective employers. My specific role within the logistics industry is that of a transportation assistant, helping members of the Army and civilians associated with the Army transport their household goods for job-related moves.
I agree Ofonime, teamwork is played important role I health care system. Without a team, we can’t do our work. We are interrelated to each other. We together can perform our work with stander care according to ANA. ANA maintain and develop the stander of nursing practice. Which allows the nurses to do their performance according to ANA standards. ANA was established to improve the quality of nurses, standards of care, Code of Ethics and maintain the requirement for nursing licensure.
It is important for physicians be caring with patients and act in a high-quality manner. Because of this, it is necessary for them to be able to practice the five skills discussed in the article. The first skill, presence and mindfulness, focuses on the avoidance of distractions while interacting with the patient. If a physician seems distracted, they are not communicating with the patient the way they should be, and the patient leaves feeling like their
After reading and learning about Holland’s Six Personality and Occupational Types I have discovered that the one that is most similar to what I am would be a mixture of artistic, social, and enterprising. I would not be able to pinpoint myself to just one type because I found too many similarities between the descriptions and myself to settle to just one. The reason I would consider myself to be artistic is because I have always been an extremely crafty person, I was a competitive dancer for 17 years, as well as enjoy writing for fun. I would also consider myself social because I spend most of my time trying to help people. I try to share my knowledge of what I know to others, as well as try to be as helpful, and an advocate for certain ideas to others. Lastly, I would consider myself to be of the Enterprising type of personality trait because I am a Public Relations and Marketing major, meaning the basis of my job is going to be to try to persuade people and convince them of either an idea with PR, or an actual product with marketing. I like to think that I have a lot of positive energy, that im a go-getter and that I am extremely sociable.
The final group I am going to explain is the front office. They are a group of there own due to a few things. They don’t have to have a dental background, they work in the front rarely seeing any of the action. They are the ones to take care of insurance scheduling appointments, faxing, phone call, and mail. They are the first people patients see. They have there own language it is business terms. They uniform varies from office to office but it is the same as there fellow front desk workers but different then they’re dental assistant co workers. As you can see the groups are different butt, have similarity.
Nurses Practicing Teamwork and Collaboration The quote “There is no I in team” has been a cliché saying for centuries that many people such as coaches will nail into the heads of their team members. Have you ever thought about how that quote might play a role in the health care setting? It is in fact very critical as a nurse to display teamwork and be able to collaborate with the people that surround him or her in order to deliver quality and safety to their patients. According to the QSEN website, the definition of teamwork and collaboration as a nurse can be described as “To function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, foster open communication, mutual respect, and share decision-making to achieve quality patient care
With regards to my professional development goals as a future Occupational Therapist (OT), I aim to increase my capacity for emotional intelligence, as I have found myself gravitating towards improving in this area over the course of several years. As such, Brown (2007) describes a putative association between engaging in mindfulness-based exercises and cultivating components of emotional intelligence—particularly interpersonal skills. In addition, when faced with challenging, conflicting, or emergency situations within my professional practice, I seek to elevate my ability to take on an impartial viewpoint in the moment. In this way, I strive to enhance my facility with making accurate clinical decisions on behalf of clients and other pertinent stakeholders, who may fall under my purview of clinical care. Accordingly, I have come to believe that mindfulness may be utilized as an efficacious tool for increasing one’s ability to engage in unbiased problem solving. It follows that, in incorporating a daily mindfulness practice into my personal life, I
It has been said before and although cliché “People will forget what you say to them, but they will never forget how you made the feel”. For this paper I will be discussing professional presence and differences in ideas of health and healing as it related to being human. I will explore and discuss my thoughts, attitudes, beliefs about healthcare (professional presence), what my personality can bring to nursing, (mindfulness practice), and the patient experience when they utilize healthcare (healing environments). Discussion will be made on the professional application of my own professional presence in regards to personality preferences. Mindfulness practice will be explored into relation with my interests, goals and beliefs.
I believe working as a team can enhance patient safety and alleviate stress. In my experience working as a nurse, by the employees working together helps the unit run smoothly. I have seen on many occasions where teamwork helps the patient out of a difficult medical situation or from having a respiratory or cardiac arrest. Teamwork should be a requirement to work in any organization. According to Human Resources for Health ([HRH], 2016), teamwork is when multiple individuals interact interdependently for a common cause. To achieve a successful team in the workplace employees must have a mutual respect for one another. Integrating services from multiple providers can increase and improve delivery of care. Teamwork in healthcare is imperative
The three words that I would use to describe my personality are ambitious, friendly, and dedicated. The reason I am choosing these terms are because I have always been told that I am very ambitious. I have many dreams and goals in my life and I never settle for less than I know I deserve. Sometimes being this way is harder than it seems because I’ve been in situations where I have given up a lot just to keep moving forward to better myself. The next word that describes me is friendly. Overall I am a very friendly person and I always try my best to be happy. Even if I have a problem I won’t reflect my personal issues at work or let them interfere with my school. I have a great ability to separate one aspect from another. Lastly dedication, I
Personally, I believe that feeling like you are part of a team plays a huge role in nursing. Knowing you have others around you that care about you as a nurse and also as a person is a great feeling. Nursing is a profession where difficulties are going to arise. Having a team that is there for you through thick and think definitely makes things run more smoothly. Although nursing teams may have a strong bond there are always going to be items that can be built upon. Improving communication skills is something that all teams should work on continuously. “Open communication such as deep listening encourages creative and critical discussions and constructive conflict resolution” (Watson, 2015, p.99). Throughout our careers as nurses we will always
When looking at personality types, there are two distinct descriptions, but some people may be in between those personalities or in a completely different
