Prosthetics makeup also known as special make-up effect is molding and casting techniques to create an advanced cosmetic effect using prosthetic sculpting. It was revolutionized by John Chambers and Dick Smith but began before. During the 1930’s makeup artist were not known skillful techniques in bringing the features of fictional characters to reality. Many of the first to use prosthetic makeup learned by applying their own makeup for film/ theatre and consisted of stunt workers and actors.
Characters in musicals such as “Cats” and “The Lion King” need totally different styles of make up as performers are to look as animalistic as possible. They do this by adding extra colours over their body rather than just the face. “Elphaba” in “Wicked” has her body makeup touched up everytime she leaves the stage during the show, as her body needs to appear entirely green.
Later after it dries, color can be applied completing the effect the makeup artist is trying to achieve. A second major tool of the trade is prosthetic makeup. This is used to make a mold of the actors ‘hands, feet, face or body, whichever needs the enhancement at the time. The artist then adds clay to the mold, and sculpts it into the effects that is needed for the scene the actor is doing.
Sex sells. We’ve all heard this before, so it’s nothing new, but a good advertiser is always aware that sex can also offend – so you have to tread a very fine line. The ad we are deconstructing, a print ad for Covergirl cosmetics, walks that line very well and is setting them up to reap the benefits of another well-planned advertising campaign. Covergirl is a heavyweight in the world of cosmetics that has been used for decades by women and girls alike, and as such they are very skilled at appealing to everyone within that very wide demographic.
Are you interested in makeup? You’re really good at it or even don't know much about it but want to learn and/or extend your education in the makeup industry? Makeup is like a different type of art. It's amazing how cosmetic products can change the way a person looks, going from no makeup to a gorgeous glam look. Seeing someone's confidence boost up and making them feel even more beautiful is what amazes me.
In the early years of film, make-up artists were not recognised for their artistic skills and ingenuity of making prosthetics or their imagination of bringing others creations to life. Many of the artists were also actors or stunt men who learnt the craft by applying their own make up for film and theatre. Compared to today’s materials used to make prosthetics, many of the materials they used were very basic as they used spirit gum, fish skin, cotton, gelatin, greasepaints, collodion, cheesecloth, clay, Fullers Earth, various putties, pastes and wax and latex. The first documented prosthetic was in the 1909 book “The Art of Theater Make up” by Cavendish Morton, who when transforming himself into the character Falstaff used silk attached to a wig, nose paste, spirit gum, crepe hair and greasepaints.
Have you ever watched a movie and wondered how something was created? A simple scar, a horrific creature, even a mutilated limb can be created to a mystifying degree of realism. Special effects makeup has been, and always will be a passion of mine. Over the years, I’ve found myself to never really pay attention to a movie that plays, but rather, always be fascinated with the little details that no one really notices. I’ve always sat and wondered exactly how certain effects were created. The curiosity as lead me to attempt to recreate some of the effects that I’ve seen. Research has lead me to acquire a vast knowledge of the molding process that makeup artists use to create prosthetics, I have become familiar with well-known makeup artists, and I have discovered certain replacements for the time consuming processes that may occur during the creation phase.
Make-up artist have been influential in artists productions throughout time; everything from Shakespearean theater to the IMAX big screen. Although their craft is stared at by audiences around the world, they do not get the respect and recognition they deserve. Without make-up there would be no beautiful actress or gruesome creature to intrigue the audience. Special effects artist are masters of illusion and molders of beauty. They have the skill to transport a person to a completely different realm of imagination. To come at this essay from a stronger position, I would first like to explain my obsession and brief insight to the world
What do you imagine when you think of makeup artists on set in a movie? Possibly someone applying blush and contour on actors to spice their looks. Well, SFX makeup is something like that. The only thing different is SFX artists see, blood, cuts, bruises, and organs as a way to spice actors looks. So what is SFX makeup? And how has it changed over time since 1930?
People often go out of their way to find the best costume for celebrating the Halloween. Most know that the costume cannot be complete without props and accessories so many would also try to find the best one that would complement their outfits. The overall appeal of the costume would also be much better with makeup. Some people would think that it can only be useful for scary costumes but this is not the case.

Electrical engineers are addressing the sensation issue by creating stretchable materials embedded with a dense network of sensors made of ultrathin gold and silicon. The network of sensors are arranged in a serpentine shape that can be elongated if stretched. The sensors can detect heat, pressure and moisture. Even though there are 400 sensors per millimeter there needs to be much more advancement before the electrical engineers can match the sensation created by natural skin. Sensation mimicking is just one problem, but the bigger problem that still needs to be addressed is to create connections to the human nervous system so that the wearer of the prosthetic can truly feel what is going on. Currently, there is a big gap as to what can be conveyed to the brain.
