Leadership. There are many who find themselves in the position of leadership within their place of work, but that doesn’t always mean that they are effective as a leader. The success of a company can rely on whether or not those in management know how to instruct and direct others on their team. What are the true characteristics of a great leader? Great leaders have the ability to empower others, which will influence other people (Maxwell, 1997). Being a mentor is one very important quality of being a successful leader. In his book Developing the Leaders Around You (1995), John C. Maxwell states “Great leaders share themselves and what they have learned” (Maxwell, 1995, p 34). These leaders help others grow in knowledge, whether it is …show more content…
That was over 10 years ago, and that former manager left a lasting impression which has inspired me to come alongside others as he did for me. Another great quality of a leader is to be a mentor. This is not a new concept, but it is new to the company that I work for where they have now instituted a new mentorship program. Currently, I am being mentored by an Accounting Manager whom I chose for the following reasons. First, he has been with the company for over 25 years and understands the business, which includes the politics of the corporation and how to handle certain situations. Second, my knowledge of accounting is limited and he takes time to explain the company’s financials. He has been an asset in guiding me in my professional career. Because of these managers and mentors, past and present as mentioned above, I have developed skills to help me lead others both personally and professionally. Leaders also have the ability to motivate others to achieve greatness. Often, lofty goals are set that are difficult for one person to accomplish alone. A true leader understands that they cannot take on the task alone. Therefore they need other like-minded individuals on their team in order to obtain the goal. According to Glick-Smith (2015), leaders are able to instill significance in others because they know they cannot tackle their obstacle without help. Understanding what gives that person on
The next question posed to Rene inquired about essential characteristics of a leader. After giving the question some thought she responded by saying that a leader must be able to remain objective and prioritize. “Prioritizing in my job is essential,” Rene stated, “with so many issues to deal with some nights it can be difficult to determine which to tackle first. However, remaining calm and objective in your decision making can help a leader prioritize properly, which can improve patient outcomes.” Additionally, Rene emphasized that the best leaders lead by example. By displaying desired attitudes and behaviors, a nursing leader may inspire their staff to act in a similar manner. Another area Rene stressed when posed this question was a leader’s ability to support learning. She went on to state that “it is necessary to focus on learning, not chastising. Placing the blame on someone rather than stepping back and looking at the details of a problem, deters the team from achieving the overall goal. Incident reports remain vital to the process of learning.” Rene continued to emphasis that by filling out incident reports individuals can analyze a situation or process and determine where the flaws or errors remain present. Without incident reports and learning from mistakes, growth remains difficult. Diana S. Contino (2011), author of “Leadership Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Aptitudes Nurses Need to Lead Organizations Effectively,” believes that organizational and
As we continue to learn about leadership, we continue to see the importance of having certain qualities. There are differing opinions on what traits hold more importance than others, but in the end, each quality plays a specific role in forming an excellent leader. Three qualities that preform a role in the equation, and that needs strengthened in my own leadership skills, are enthusiasm, persistence and charisma.
There are certain qualities such as integrity, hard work, dedication and accountability which makes a leader. One of the key characteristics of any leader is the capacity to inspire other individuals. Individuals from a group or a working environment some of the time require an impact that drives them to success. Leaders are individuals who must propel and forward others. Good leaders must be great at group building.
Leadership is one of the hidden qualities in the personality of an individual. It is complicated and challenging to for human nature to grade an individual depending on one’s personality. Leadership is founded on the organic structure of the personality such as responsibility, social interaction, skill, experience and the power of organizing people. Effective leadership is the ability of a leader to imaginatively guides, directs, and influences other peoples. The leader can achieve through meditating between organization and individuals in the manner that both parties involved would achieve maximum satisfaction. The role of a leader is to get his or her people from where they are to where they have not been before. What makes an effective leader is the intelligence and power an individual has to create and understand the position he or she holds and know what to represent to the people. A leader has to fight for what he or she believes, can do, and defend anything against him or her (Shirey, 2010).
John Wooden was a visionary leader and undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches in history. Full of anecdotes from past experiences, Wooden on Leadership details the leadership strategies of Wooden. This personal account makes it clear that it wasn 't winning games that made him a model leader; it was ensuring that, regardless of the final score, his players grew and put forth their utmost effort. His philosophy regarding leadership not only applies to sports, but to life as well. Wooden viewed the concept of leadership as a learning experience that is constantly changing within the boundaries of a core set of values; and he displayed leadership techniques that modeled these views.
Leadership can be characteristics that some individual possesses. These characteristic traits enable those individuals to induce others to accomplish tasks (Northhouse et. Al., 2010). A successful leader
“A leader is a person you will follow to a place you would not go by yourself,” said Joel Barker. Where would we be today in history, business, and life if not for the leaders we have followed to get here? Leaders are everywhere; they are running our country, leading our work department, and leading our class lines. The beauty of leadership is that everyone’s definition and preferred style is and can be different. When choosing a leader to write this paper on I knew exactly who to choose for two reasons. First, the leadership style is attractive to me and I know it most resembles the style I use when exercising my leadership roles. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, we both share a passion for all things coffee.
This session helped me to recognize all the skills that need to be a good leader. During this day, I have been able to discover many of my skills, and more importantly, it helped me to identify my weaknesses. Now, I can work and change this weakness; as a result, it will improve my performance as a team and be a great leader.
Throughout time there has been a development in what traits a leader should contain. Within the development of surveys people are able to decided what characteristics they believe are those of a good leader. Surveys are not just used to see the good they are also used as a form of improvement where people can assess a person’s trait to help them better themselves. Having a standard for what a good leader is, is not necessarily used the same in each position or job field. Some places of employment look for particular characteristic that others may not look at with the same level of importance. The traits of importance that are looked for in a cop may not be the same as of a social worker.
Throughout 2016, many different people will claim they can lead America to greatness again just as they do each election year. This directs attention towards leadership, and most Americans simply trust that these potential candidates display leadership characteristics. Unfortunately, politicians don’t always exemplify leadership, and many Americans experience poor leaders daily such as dreadful bosses. Because of these commonplace experiences, leadership may not appear as a direct character trait. Fortunately, I experience great leadership daily between two great leaders I follow, Chad Miller and Kara Popp. Adaptable communication, the ability to inspire, a clear passion, and professional attitudes all characterize a great leader.
It is vaguely important for every individual to know the great characteristics of being a leader. Leadership today is such a dominant characteristic to have because it represents the capability of being able to lead others with an purpose. This role is used everywhere within a job field, sports, churches, homes, and pretty much anything you can name when you are taking authority from someone or something. Five characteristics of leadership that I will be discussing in this paper on how leadership enhances yourself as a person from culture to culture, how leadership enhances the qualifications of your progress in the workplace, and also how leadership helps you in college as well are: Visionary, Open-minded, Inspirational, Humbleness and Trustworthiness.
The true task of leadership involves the ability to make change happen. To understand the behavior and traits of a leader, one needs to look at their innate characteristics. The concept of leader traits and attributes is indeed an old one, predating the scientific study of leadership and reaching back into antiquity, across several early civilizations. Although leadership has many definitions and varied criteria for success, it is defined by the assumption that it is an influence process that in many cases is situational.
I am fortunate. I belong to an exclusive group of which only .04% of the population of our country are members. I am a military child. Because I grew up as a military dependent, it took me a while to realize how special and unique are the men and women who served in our armed forces. This was the norm as far as I was concerned. In my mind, my dad just went to “work” and all our friends and neighbors did the same. As I matured I began to realize how lucky I was to live among the guardians of our freedom, for it allowed me the opportunity to see examples of exceptional leadership from as early as I can remember. It was watching these leaders over the years that I begin to recognize the traits that make up a great leader. The three
As per my own experience, I believe that the leadership is a skill which help others to grow in their own field, or who could drive others to achieve their own success. So, in the same way your behaviour, capabilities, and command should be considered as a person own skills that are needed in order to become a successful to motivate and direct others.
It is obvious that our society is organized according to some regularities. There are people who should make some serious decisions and rule our world and, at the same time, there are also people who accept these decisions, hoping that they will result in some benefits for them. It should be said that not always leaders, who are responsible for some important decisions, are respected by the rest of population. That is why, very often even right and needed solutions cannot be accepted because of the lack of trust which this person has. In coherent society this problem is usually connected with the leadership qualities which a person possesses. Under these conditions, the question of leadership obtains a great importance. Trustworthy leader can be more efficient as he/she can unite people only by the power of his/her words and persuade them to work in order to achieve some result. At the same time, a leader, who cannot be trusted, has pernicious influence on a collective and even destroys it. With this in mind, it is possible to analyze different types of leaders in order to understand the difference better.
