Reasons Why Animal Testing Should Be Banned

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) statistics records the use of roughly 26 million animals per year for animal testing. These test reports in many cases are poor. Although animals were greatly used in the past the effects of treatments on animals and humans can’t be compared. The human body, reactions to toxins, and usefulness of treatments is different because we are different, “While animal’s maybe ‘whole models,’ states Dr. Aysha Akhtar, MD,” they are the wrong whole model because of interspecies differences.” Testing animals for human treatments should not continue to be practiced.

For many years, the field of science has used animals in medical experiments worldwide, because of this innocent animals are being killed everyday. They are being tested with new drugs, new treatments, and by many makeup companies. Connecticut recently celebrated the passage of the “Beagle Freedom Law”, a law that requires laboratories to work with charities and rescue groups to find homes for research cats and dogs. Animals are being tested so humans do not have to be but animal tests do not reliably predict results in human beings, although animals are the closest thing to humans. Most experiments involving animals are flawed, wasting the lives of innocent animal subjects. Over 100 million animals suffer a year from testing. Testing animals is a lot more expensive than alternative methods and it is wasting government research dollars. Animal testing is not only a bad idea, but it is also inhuman and it should not be tolerated. The FDA should stop allowing animal testing. An animal does not give out the same results on a test than a human would.

After all, the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry prove that animal testing in drugs used by humans is unreliable. According to the FDA, 92% of drugs tested fail to meet the standards for human use. Animals do not share the same body system or physiological responses as humans, so why test these medication drugs on them? The National Anti-Vivisection Society states that it can be dangerous to apply animal-derived data to humans. Drugs that may be effective in animals may not be safe or effective in humans and vice versa. Animal experimentation has become very a controversial topic in the United States of America today. In many countries it is still legal to poison, blind, and kill animals for cosmetic uses. While many of the experiments conducted on animals today is required by law, most of it is not. In fact, many countries have placed bans on the testing of certain products on animals. Animal testing has been a controversial topic discussed by many people over the past decade. There are many organizations that are trying to ban the use of animal testing because of the cruelty us humans are doing to innocent animals and the pain and suffering these animals go through. The first organization I found when researching was PETA (People, Ethical, Treatment, Animals). From my research, this is the largest animal rights group founded so far. Their main office is in Norfolk, VA. They are not only fighting animal testing but animals for the use of food, clothing and entertainment. This organization has donated over a million dollars to find non-animal testing methods. Another organization I found was PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine).

In some ways I be-live animal testing should be illegal but I also feel like it should be legal. In order to solves the worlds problems you have to start small. Like what if you wanted to see a hybrid of animals you would have to take a sample of DNA from one animal and put it into another animal. so for example what if you have a three legged mouse and you know lizards limbs grow back so you would take a sample of the lizard and insert it into a mouse. So that is starting small. And what if your testing is good then .You would move up to something larger like a three legged cat then dog then horse. And imagine if all your resolute have been a success you would like to try it on a humans.

One of the major reasons is that the testing does not usually work out. The thing with using animals to test products that will be used on or with humans is that the animals have a different genetic make up than people do. This can cause problems when determining whether or not a product will help or harm humans. An example of one product would be aspirin. This product is used by humans to relieve headaches but it is seriously harmful for some animals. Another medical product is a drug called FK-506. This drug helps lower the chance of a donated organ being rejected in its new body. This drug however was almost dismissed because it failed some animal testing ( Ballinger). With this in mind, who knows how many other life changing drugs have been dismissed because it failed animal testing. A lot of the time when products go to human trial, they fail. One author stated statistics and reasonings as to why products fail human trials, “up to 92 percent of experimental drugs that are safe for animals fail human trials because it is either ineffective or dangerous. Even primates, who have very similar genetic make-up to humans, fell short in making drugs completely safe for people. If you have ever taken a medicine, it was most likely tested on an animal first. If the medicine made you feel better after you were sick, then you are in luck, because many times the same cannot be said for animal test subjects. Just think for a second. Imagine yourself in a dream and you are locked in a small metal cage, no sunlight or fresh air. You are not able to move around much or even eat when you want, and you are locked in that cage for multiple days at a time. How would you feel? Well that is how these animals feel used for animal testing. Animal testing is a debate topic for that many people have different feelings about. For example, in the article “Animals in Science” says, “Every year in the U.S., over 25 million animals are used in biomedical experimentation, product and cosmetic testing, and science education. This includes dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, pigs, sheep, monkeys, chimpanzees, and more” (neavs). Many see animals as apart of their family who care very much for. Some people even have animals to help them with their disabilities known as a service animal. Others, on the other hand, do not care for animals as much and would rather have them used for advancing medical research. If you don’t know exactly what happens during animal testing allow me to explain. Dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys and other mammals suffer every year. But in most labs the animals used are rabbits, rats, mice, hamsters, and guinea pigs. They all go through multiple tests such as, the Draize eye test. The draize eye test is a test used by cosmetic companies to calculate irritation from the shampoos and other products. The test is done to rabbits which their eyelids are clipped open for multiple days. The product is placed in their eyes and studied for multiple days. Doing so it is not allowing them to run away, rub the product out, or even blink. Although humans benefit from the successful research done, the suffering, pain and deaths of the animals tested are not worth the human benefits. Thus, I believe the testing of products should not be done on animals.

One of those reasons is that animals are not excellent test subjects. Animals are not the same as humans. Using mice and rats to test the safety of drugs in humans is accurate only a mere 43% of the time (Arguments Against Animal Testing). That is less that 50%, therefore, animal testing should not be continued anymore.

People can die due to store bought products being dangerous. With the help of animal testing these people can be saved. Animal testing is a series of experiments used to help save lives. Animal testing is used to find out if cosmetics, cleaners, and many other things are safe for human lives. If animal testing never happened more people would not be as safe. Because of animal testing many innocent lives have been saved. Animal testing is a very effective way to ensure product safety and should not be banned.

Not all medicines that work on animals work on humans. According to ProCon.org “92% experimental drugs that are safe and effective on animals fail on humans because they don’t work or are to dangerous”. I think that if most medicines don’t work then they should try a different method that works better. Maybe if they used a different method it would be better and more effective. One way to not use animals is called In Vitro. In Vitro is the simulation of living organisms by using things such as petri dishes. It also takes more time to do research on animals rather than using In Vitro. According to ProCon.org “Animals make better test objects because of their shorter life span”. If you use In Vitro you don’t have to worry about animals dying.

According to NEAV, “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted that 92 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trials because they don’t work or are dangerous.” The article goes on to explain that out of the 8 percent of drugs that do pass the human trials, half of them must be relabeled to account for unforeseen side effects on human subjects. The ramifications of these failing experiments cost companies millions of dollars. Furthermore, PETA explains that there are several drugs that are essential to human medicine that react quite negatively in animals. For example, aspirin kills cats and causes birth defects in several other animals including dogs and monkeys. If that drug had first been tested on cats, it never would have reached the market and provided the extensive relief it has to date. Also, animals in laboratories to be experimented upon are known to display understandably stressed behavior which jeopardizes the accuracy and credibility of the results. For example, in a NewScientist article by Ann Baldwin, the dangers of anxious animals are explained.
