Reflection is the examination of personal thoughts and actions. For practitioners especially nurses, it means focusing on how they interact with their peers and with the environment to obtain a clearer picture of their own behavior. Kanuka (2002) writes that reflection is an essential component of understanding complex problems, issues, and concepts. Albeit meanings, patterns, and purpose become clear. Elder, Evans and Nizette (2009) say that allowing self-reflection to guide our nursing practice can improve outcomes because a strong sense of self-enables us to deal with problems better and even with other individuals. Looking back at my group before and after the debate process, I realized that the group had members coming from diverse backgrounds, had different opinions, personalities, and belief systems. It was, therefore, imperative to create an environment between the team members that would allow for trust, collaboration, harmony, teamwork, respect, non-judgmental and open to every group members opinions. This would limit confrontation and allow the team to work cohesively and together so as to avoid any disagreements that would arise. Tuckman’s theory of group development was used in our discussion of group development. According to Tuckman (1965), group process development goes through various stages namely forming, norming, performing and adjournment. The group consisted of five members, two opposing the motion while two were for the motion and one person was to be
It is still so surreal to reflect back on my first semester as an incoming college student in the ENC1101 course, analyzing at my progression as a reader and writer in literacy. Since the first day of class I set in stone my goals for this class: receive a 4.0 GPA, develop my connecting theories skills in writing, and become more aware of objectives for each Unit throughout the course. All of these goals became achievements that not only make others proud but most importantly give me self pride. In order to earn the grades and achieve these goals, I went after every opportunity that I was given as an incoming college student, such as office hours and extra credit. By taking this course I have gained confidence with the utilization of literacy, and made an addition to my group of impactful literacy sponsors. Once students are finished with high school they assume that there is nothing else to learn beyond the stereotypical five paragraph essay, but they are so wrong. I was able to obtain so much knowledge about numerous course concepts from Writing about Writing, articles, and my professor. These concepts will carry on with me throughout a bright future of writing courses, job interviews, and any other skills that require literacy. The four outcomes listed below will help illuminate how I improved as a writer, by being a driven college student and going out of the way to earn my achievements in this course. In the first outcome I improved comprehending scholar texts,
Reflective practice in nursing is the process where we examine our nursing ability’s and practice in order to critically think and analyze the way we work and think about the views of others in our practice, what we could have done and we could have achieved a greater result by doing this also allows us as nurses to include best practice and use our own judgment in patient care to show the factors that either aid and hinder nurse to patient relationship. (Lowenstein, Bradshaw and Fuszard, 2001) described reflecting in nursing practice “the nurse must first come to understand what he or she defines as ideal practice”.
In this assignment the discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of using reflection in nursing practice is undertaken. Boyd and Fales, 1983 states reflection is "the process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in
I feel strongly and I am convince that the fact that I had a headache and blocked sinuses affected my learning during the course time.
I would like to think that I had some significant growth as a writer in my first semester as a college student. My rhetorical analysis essay, persuasive essay, and reflective analysis essay were all very different from each other in how I approached them and felt about them, but each one helped me grow as a writer in different ways. The rhetorical analysis was my first college essay so I felt some extreme self-imposed pressure to do well on it. I really enjoy writing persuasive essays because it causes you to form your own opinions and support them with evidence. My least favorite essay would most likely have to be the reflective analysis essay. I absolutely despise sharing my thoughts and emotions with people, let alone writing them. Beginning the essay was extremely difficult for me. However, I did found it to be the easiest essay to write once I had all my ideas gathered together. The point is, these three essays all had their pros and cons to them, but nonetheless, they each helped me grow as a writer in their own way, which helped me reach many of the stated outcomes for this class. This paper examines some of my work in these essays and describes how I was able to reach some of the course objectives.
In nursing reflection is a crucial characteristic for the development of autonomous, critical and advancement for nurses. According to Chong (2009), reflective cycle is a continue cycle where experiences and reflection on the experiences are inter related. Studies had proven that nurses who reflect on their daily experiences provides better care and understand their actions as well as enhanced their clinical knowledge and skills (Hansebo & Kilhlgren, 2001). Reflective practice allows the nurses to examine their actions and experiences which assist them to develop their practices. Reflection has an effect on level of nursing profession starting from the nursing student up to practicing nurses. Researcher had argued that in order to be able to reflect effectively, one must have open-mindedness, willing to accept criticism and have the courage to move on (Bulman, Lathlean & Gobbi, 2012).
This reflection paper is about Judy, a 40-year-old woman that migrated from Guyana to Canada with her husband and three children ages 5, 7, and 9. Judy has been married for twelve years, but she has been living in Ontario for ten years with her family. Her husband left her for a younger woman and wants nothing to do with her and the children. Judy says she is very angry, and finds herself crying uncontrollably at times. Also by her tone of voice and the expression on her face, I could see the resentment that she feels for her husband. Judy has never worked outside the home, and her husband took care of all the rent and bills. Now she feels that she is going into a state of depression as she is worried about how she is going to handle the responsibilities of caring for her three children and paying the bills without having a job or any help from friends and relatives.
Caring and support the first protective factor in the resiliency wheel stated the most important way to provide that is how you talk to yourself. I always tell the students I work with how powerful positive self-talk can be and that having positive thoughts can actually change your frame of mind and attitude. So one would think that I would follow through with positive self-talk, yet I tend to be a very hard on myself, inner critic. I do though when starting to feel anxious in certain situations that I will use self-talk, which helps me to feel calm.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term like how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. In this class I have learned to write and format an essay the correct way such as a rhetorical essay and visual analysis and lastly compositors essay. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly.
I have had different writing experiences throughout high school so I was able to write my essays fairly well. I am better at grammar than I am at putting a fully developed paragraph together. During this semester, I learned about modifiers and how to correctly use commas; I thought I knew what those were pretty well, and as it turns out, I didn’t really. I believed that during this semester I developed a lot of skills such as communication. I struggled with the first group paper because I felt like my group members didn’t care enough to write their paragraphs. I realized that people write at different stages because they have busy lives, and after we figured out the situation, the second paper went a lot more smoothly. Another thing I have improved upon is being a thinker because I have to think of who the audience is, and how to phrase sentences correctly and professionally.
What concepts, principles, or ideas that you have learned, do you think you will remember the most after you leave this class?
Coming into college I had only taken one advanced placement course in high school that had somewhat prepared me for the writing we would be working on in this class. I took AP Language in eleventh grade and I believe it helped me create solid argumentative essays at that time, however, I do not believe that course actually taught me how to properly write an essay. Coming into this class I thought this course would be overwhelming and I would not be able to keep up with the workload along with the standards of these essays. Yet, this class actually helped me learn how to write an essay for example, what belongs in the introduction as well as the conclusion. My view towards this class has not changed much since first entering college, however, I did learn this course was a lot more beneficial than I originally thought it would be.
When I began my coursework for EDUC 5425, my main goals were to enhance my knowledge of the past, present, and future of bilingual and multicultural education and to become more aware of the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in my Spanish classroom. As this course comes to an end, I am confident that I have made significant progress in meeting those two goals.
I was eager to see how my research paper had been scored for I felt that it was one of my best works, worthy of an A. I turned to the last page of my 6 page paper only to find that I was 2 points off the expected grade. The disappointment that immediately followed was justified by my thoughts as I questioned Ms.Brumbacks grading policy. I confirmed my beliefs when my friends had received even lower marks, that contradicted their intelligence. As quickly as these thoughts came to mind they left, for I am a reasonable person and I don't let my emotions judge logical events. I had received a low grade because I only spent a day writing the research paper and my bibliography was pitiful. The grade I had received did not reflect my
The aim of the reflective essay is to highlight my own personal development skills that I have developed during first semester of my module. However, in this report I will make sure my learning ability phase and what this module has allowed me to work and understand in improving my personal skills and purpose. My major aim is to develop and assess an in depth range of my personal traits as a student in order to endorse my future development plan.
