Remaining Problems of Sexism and Discrimination

Women have two kinds of rights, the ones shared with men by virtue of their common humanity, and the ones required by virtue of their differences from men (Purdy). Sexism fails to recognize these rights by assuming, on the basis of inadequate evidence, that there are morally relevant differences between men and women, or by overlooking morally relevant differences that call for different treatment. Although sexism can be a result of inattention, or the deliberate subordination of women’s interests to those of men, it may also result from historically embedded social institutions that naturalize assumptions about gender (Rosenstein). In other words, sexism is the result of socialization- people are taught that certain behaviors are appropriate for one gender and not the other. Because of this, society has created the stigma that women are the weaker sex and are relegated to the domestic realm of nurturance and emotions, such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children. Meanwhile, a man's sole purpose is to provide for his family. An example of sexism is workplace inequality. Women may work longer, but receive less pay than men. Social segregation is nearly inevitable in the world we live. Society is going to critique and ridicule every individual in some way. Each person will fall into some sort of stereotype whether it be due to race, religion, or even gender. In some situations this is considered a natural human instinct, however in others it is simply unacceptable. If you walk into any manual labor facility and observe the surroundings, the staff is going to be predominantly comprised of male employees. Why? Since the dawn of time women have claimed to hold the answer; they’ve cried “inequality” and complained of sexulazation by men. However the truth lies in history. Since the creation of man and woman, the two have played vastly different roles. Sexism is the idea that one gender is inherently inferior to the opposing, and is typically prevalent amongst females; however the male species have been known to be affected as well. Although sexism is an issue in the lives of both men and women, men have been known to receive benefits far superior to those of the women (Thompson 300-301).

Friedman argues that these conceptions and different moral norms and stereotypes associated with each gender create a “division of moral labor.” A division of moral labor identifies the roles that are acceptable for each gender. For example, the roles of authority, regulation of social order, politics and economy are expected by men and the roles of care-giving, responsiveness, nurturing and being emotionally expressive are expected by females. Hence, society creates different gender expectations. Females are expected to emotionally available to their family’s needs and men are expected to be the breadwinner of the house and maintain power over the females. People are expected to follow the norms and fulfill their roles according to the division of moral labor and if they fail to do so, they are labelled deviant.

While studying art and popular culture in class, our class came across a very interesting topic and story. Throughout time everything has changed in humanity, in the way that humans look at one another. Now in the 1980’s when the whole AIDS and HIV epidemic started that’s when the whole world saw the disgrace in each other. Now in class learning about the disgrace that women had upon the world because of HIV and AIDS has really changed in a way that women are not allowed to be free within themselves anymore. The woman of today have to deal with sexism, classism and even racism just in order to survive in this world. But even through all of this women are still strong and fight for what they believe in and never give up, no matter what

Throughout history, sexism has went from being one of the most undiscussed topic to being one of the most diverse, controversial topics in the United States. Gender bias, also known as sexism, is a full of attitudes, laws, taboos, preferences, and behaviors that differentiates and discriminates against either sex. These may be a position of which male dominance and female subjugation in the modern society. It could also be a form of sexual stereotypes between men and women, these are commonly experienced in employment versus other positions. A final place that discrimination is faced is the academic environment, the female to male ratios are not in sync in certain programs and courses because of this and it is pressuring men and women to not go into certain fields and do what they love and please. Most advertisements on Television, magazines, newspapers, online ad’s, use a charged sexually image with a female as the star. Women are to be a pleasure for men, and nothing else. Many people have different opinions on genders and sexuality and that is okay, but sometimes you just need to keep them to yourselves.

The Great Depression was the big economic crisis in the 1930’s. People lost their homes, their jobs, and their dignity. Not until the middle of the 1950’s did the stock market return to pre-depression levels. During this unfortunate time people hunted for good paying jobs, but were unable to find them. To this day class in this country is under scrutiny. The middle-class is vanishing before our eyes as the poverty level increases and the wealthiest class becomes larger. Not only was there great inequality in the U.S. during the great depression, but also there was still very strong dislikes toward anyone of color. Racism in this country is still prominent today along with class inequality.

Sexism is a type of discrimination which I feel is such a part of our culture that we often do not even recognize it and it is widely overlooked. Johnson (2013) suggests “we need to deal with the social roots that generate and nurture the social problems that are reflected in the behavior of individuals” (p. 335). Unquestionably, it becomes difficult to recognize, and therefore begin to change, that which is the social norm in our world; and yet, to do nothing perpetuates the problem of a patriarchal culture (Johnson, 2013).

The division of labor that arose based at first on survival needs created societal attitudes about the roles, attributes, and abilities of men and women (Slaughter, 7). Men were the rulers and hard laborers, while women were the family caretakers (Slaughter, 7).

Generally, even though there may be no way to completely eliminate sexism on a worldwide political, economic, and social scale, it is evident that sexism should be recognized as a societal problem that needs to be dealt with. In this day and age, it is just inappropriate that females all over the globe are still treated differently and with less rights than their male counterparts. In order for us to reduce the effects of sexism, everyone must first realize that sexist behaviors and actions are still common and take place to most women on a daily basis. The fight women’s rights and equality has been an ongoing theme throughout history. Much like racism, sexism limits a person based on a physicality they cannot control. Its uncivilized and brings a huge uproar and controversy in its path. For years there has been groups and protests to change the course of sexism and change it for the better. Admittedly, it has improved, but as a society we are far from equality.

Everyday all over the world even in the land of the free there is at least a couple hundred of woman and men who get added into the list of sexism victims. I am pretty sure every person on this plant has been added into that list. I think everyone should be aware of this and should prevent this act from damaging another human being. Thanks to movements such as Feminism which is the belief of social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Because of feminism you girls and boys are understanding and fixing gender roles. I believe because of this discrimination it can cause someone to feel bad about doing or feeling something that makes them happy or making them feel unaccepted.

Gender inequality is a social problem that is widespread in society. It is referred to as the unfair treatment of individuals based on one 's gender. Historically, laws have opposed women to go to school, access certain jobs, and purchase property. Gender inequality has been experience through culture – honor-killing, sex-selective abortion, and society – occupation, gender roles, and education. The social expectations of men and women differ between cultures that are constructed socially and culturally. These expectations are displayed in roles, and behavior believed both by men and women and their interdependent relationships. Gender inequality can be further understood through the structure of sexism. Discrimination takes place in gender inequality for the reason that men and women are treated on the basis of gender alone (Amjad, R., Ashfaq, M., Kousar, R., Saghir, A., 2010).

Gender discrimination against women is out of control across the world and seeps into many aspects of women 's lives. This discrimination harms women in two ways. First, women directly experience stressful events. The experience of sexism is so common that some research suggests women can experience one to two instances of everyday sexism. But women aren 't only harmed by sexism through the physical stress caused by others. They are harmed to the extent that they internalize and adopt these sexist attitudes that can manifest as poor self-concept. This negative self-concept often obvious on a subconscious level, as women and men will demonstrate automatic negative biases against women (Ferguson, 2013).
