Richard Nixon Why Did Bureaucracy And Enter The Navy

Richard Milhous Nixon was born on January 9, 1913 in Yorba Linda California on his father’s lemon farm. Richard Nixon was the second of five children born to Frank Nixon and Hannah Milhous. Unfortunately, two of his brothers died. In 1925, Richard Nixon’s younger brother died and in 1933, his older brother, whom he greatly admired, died of tuberculosis. His ancestors emigrated from Ireland in the 18th century, and settled in Pennsylvania and Indiana. In 1922, Richard Nixon and his family moved to Whittier, California after the lemon farm failed. Richard Nixon regularly attended Quaker services and experienced a rough childhood, having an abusive father and manipulative mother. He attended Whittier High School where he came in second for student body president. Graduating second in his class, he was offered a scholarship to Harvard but was not able to afford the travel and tuition, so enrolled Whittier College, a quaker institution. He excelled as a student and leader. He became the freshman class President and, as a senior, student body president. Richard Nixon was unable to really excel in football. He graduated second in his class, in 1934, and received a scholarship to Duke Law School. The Whittier College president wrote, “I believe Nixon will become one of America’s important, if not great leaders.”

Richard Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal left no doubt to his involvement of being impeached. During the Nixon Administration, he was able to prevent colleges from being gender biased and allowing both male and female to have equal opportunity and receiving financial aid as well as competing in sports. He was able to establish the Environmental Protection Agency. He also worked to create a relationship between the U.S and the Middle East. Unfortunately, even with all of the accomplishments, he was able to have, everyone will remember Richard Nixon as the president who was involved in the Watergate scandal. The Watergate scandal left an asterisk by his legacy while being in the office, the results left him with having to resign and with him facing criminal charges as well, the Scandal became well known to the public in the summer of 1974. Through my essay, I will discuss why I am intrigued by the Watergate scandal, and discuss what if Richard Nixon never got caught on the audio tape?

Entering World War II in 1939, Nixon started working for the federal government for the Office of Emergency Management. He soon joined the navy in 1942 to help fight against the german, japanese, and italians. He was serving as an aviation ground officer and then rose to the rank of lieutenant commander. He got sent to the Pacific with the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command. Almost fifteen months later he soon arrived in the United States. While Nixon was in the United States he was elected the U.S. House of Representatives. He defeated the five-term Democratic Congressman Jerry voorhis in a campaign that relied on Jerry’s communist actions. Nixon soon gained the reputation as an internationalist in foreign policies. One event he is most famous for during his Vice-Presidency is the “kitchen debate” with Khrushchev at the United States exhibition in Moscow (Small 47). This particular debate argued capitalism verses communism and it just so happened to take place in a kitchen (Small 49). He was the first American official to address the Soviets in a live television broadcast. Over the next eight years, Nixon continued to elevate the office of vice president to a new level. With his youthful and vigorous attitude, he made sure he would be the most active vice president in any previous administration.

When people think of Richard Nixon the Watergate scandal may come to mind. Impeachment might also come to mind, but contrary to popular thought he was never truly impeached. Notably, the only impeached presidents are Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Yet, Nixon has a strong public disapprobation. Most of Richard Nixon’s legacy remains surrounded by negativity, but is there anything positive or noteworthy regarding Nixon’s presidency? Due to the Watergate scandal, people tend to overlook many aspects of Richard Nixon, to include, his background, his actual involvement in Watergate, and his legacy.

John F Kennedy attempted to become an officer in the army, butwas medically discharged due to lower back problems. However, due to help from his dad’s naval commander, he joined the naval reserve. He commanded several submarines, but one day on a sub called PT-109 they were smashed into by a Japanese destroyer and he carried a badly burned man to land with a life vest in between his teeth. However, he had injured his back and was given a purple star and he quit the military.

He was first seen in the presidential seen was in the 1960 elections against John F. Kennedy, which he lost. Though he was not discourage and ran again during the presidential election of 1968. After already losing one election, Nixon was worried about the results, but this time, luck and the electoral college was on his side this time and won with pretty eye opening results. It wasn’t until his re-election where Nixon was really worried, he didn’t know what to think about the results, but the only thing he was sure was that he was going to lose and without doing anything, he was going to watch how bad he was going to lose the presidency again. He already lost once and he wasn’t going to lose another time, especially to George McGovern. Well, he won. Roosevelt respectively. Even though they are very influential words, my favorite has to be: “By taking this action, I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America.” This was Richard Nixon’s quote as he became the first person to resign from their presidency. Former President Richard Nixon was remembered for many things, most notably as the worst president in the United States of America, all because of a thing called “Watergate.” That begs the question: was Nixon’s presidency as bad as it is known for, or were there good things that outweigh the bad?

After listening to the debate without watching, I felt that Nixon won, not for anything but his oratory skills. I felt that the two were fairly equal on substance but Nixon's voice and pitch while articulating his points was better. However, after watching the video, I find Kennedy to have been more appealing and feel that he won the debate. Electability of a political leader is dependent on a number of factors, and I think the most important factor is charisma. It is Kennedy who carried the day as more charismatic than Nixon in the following manner.

He served five years in the presidential office as a republican (1969-1974), and he was the only president to resign from office in history. Although through his presidency he had accomplished many things, such as creating revenue sharing, ending the draft, and creating anticrime laws, he still had a rough time rebuilding his reputation after many assumptions of corruption in his office. Though he never admittedly pledged guilty to his crimes of taking government funds for his own personal gain, there was proof that he was. Scandal! I am not a crook, Watergate, impeachment, resignation, one final “two handed V”; which president comes to mind? President Richard M. Nixon was a visionary leader; but an unethical leader. This paper will examine two visionary leadership traits of President Nixon, two unethical leadership skills of Nixon and then look to my own career for two personal examples of visionary and two unethical leadership skills I portrayed.
