Role of Physical Activities in Growth and Development
1. What will be the activity of choice for preschool children developing increased body mass index? Increased BMI is most oftenly related with sedentary lifestyle. There is an increasing trend of sitting for a long amount of time in children. This is due to the development of technology such as television, computer games, mobile phones, etc. that encourage them to sit to enjoy the entertainments rather than doing physical activities. Sedentary behaviors should be avoided from early age. Limiting sedentary behaviors is as important as promoting physical activity. Increased BMI also puts the children at a higher risk for contracting Non-communicable diseases.1 Children’s physical exercise is generally done by following the FITT principle. FITT stands for frequency, intensity, time/duration, and type of activity. The exercise should also be adjusted with the children’s motoric and mental development.1 Preschoolers are those aged 3-4 years. Children are advised to be physically active daily because optimal motoric development requires continues stimulus. Generally, intensity does not really matter for children. This is because even moderate amount of activity, such as walking, can still be beneficial to the children’s health. During childhood our body and mind changes very fast. I believe that nowadays parents focus more on the brain developement of their children than their physical activity. When I was a little girl - over 20 years ago - we spent most of our time outside playing, running and enjoying fresh air and being in movement. Physical activity of children can secure them health and well being in their adulthood as well as teach them a lot of very importants aspects like social relations and behaviors in different situations.
It is important to make the best possible use of space and equipment so the children can enjoy the activities.All children will have equal opportunities to develop movement skills and the environment will be changed to help children practise the mivements skills.When planning physical activity we ensure that no child is excluded from play and activities are modified as necessary.
Exercise is physical activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness, but it is not limited to simply physical maintenance it can help in mental elasticity. As a small child is developing the brain is still in midst development. You can almost think of the brain as a muscle, but it is not directly exercised. Yet, in the process of playing games or simple activity can sharpen puzzle solving skill and elasticity for children. It still works for older people, but in age the brain becomes less elastic making the best time to give puzzle skills and general increased connectivity is while still a child. Then again one needs not forget the physical fitness aspect of exercises in increasing the longevity and quality of life. Then again it is no better time to form good habits then as a young child, it always seems to stick in long-term memory easier and longer when trained into it. Exercise also benefits cardiovascular fitness leading to less heart disease in old age. I always see one of the most annoying things in my mind “ I’ll exercise tomorrow” that there in essence why many people this day and age have a increase chance of heart disease and obesity. One does not need to set time aside to exercise. Exercise can be and can take place any place any were just be active. Like waiting in line in the store just standing there, why not do calf raises not as if anyone really cares I have done it countless times. The health promotions can essential be aim at children whom are obese; childhood obesity has become a major health emergency and the incidence of obesity has increased over the years. The purpose of conducting health promotion is to provide information on how to combat childhood obesity and educate the family on the risks of other health issues that are associated with obesity. The problem of obesity has typically originated when the child is in preschool and it continues to develop even when the child becomes an adolescent and throughout adulthood. It seems that children will grow up to become obese and this can inflict complications towards their health as the child continues to age. The term obesity is a chronic condition that is typically characterized by an excess body fat; body fat it is defined by using the body mass index (BMI) to determine if the child is overweight. The body mass index (BMI) is a calculation of the percentile this will indicate the child’s percentage of height and weight, and if the child is in the 95th percentile range it is considered that the child is overweight or obese (De Onis 2010). An overweight child can also be associated with other serious health problems of premature illness, and that can progress and even cause death. Nowadays, more and more children have obesity compare to the children in thirty years ago. The research showed that children who have obesity in their early age may cause either short-term or long-term consequence. The short-term consequence for the obesity children include low self-esteem and the long-term consequence includes asthma and heart disease. (CDC) The best way to prevent these is to encourage children do at least one hour physical exercise a day within the trained instructor guided. ( Epstein 2014) My paper is mainly focused on how my curriculum promote physical development in a child care center.
