Role of Physical Activities in Growth and Development

1. What will be the activity of choice for preschool children developing increased body mass index? Increased BMI is most oftenly related with sedentary lifestyle. There is an increasing trend of sitting for a long amount of time in children. This is due to the development of technology such as television, computer games, mobile phones, etc. that encourage them to sit to enjoy the entertainments rather than doing physical activities. Sedentary behaviors should be avoided from early age. Limiting sedentary behaviors is as important as promoting physical activity. Increased BMI also puts the children at a higher risk for contracting Non-communicable diseases.1 Children’s physical exercise is generally done by following the FITT principle. FITT stands for frequency, intensity, time/duration, and type of activity. The exercise should also be adjusted with the children’s motoric and mental development.1 Preschoolers are those aged 3-4 years. Children are advised to be physically active daily because optimal motoric development requires continues stimulus. Generally, intensity does not really matter for children. This is because even moderate amount of activity, such as walking, can still be beneficial to the children’s health.
