However, too much perfectionism will reduce the productivity of a manager attempting to plan. Organization also utilizes the achievement, affiliative and perfectionistic styles in that organizing not only requires the motivation and drive to accomplish tasks, it requires people, and the affiliative style aids in bringing people on-board through relationship building. The perfectionistic style, as previously mentioned requires that organization be efficient and effective, but the level Brian’s personality possessed isn’t enough to become overly perfectionistic. Leading could utilize Brian’s healthy dose of the humanistic-encouraging style. However, leading cannot be accomplished by encouragement and kind words alone. Thus, the affiliative style helps with the relationship aspect of leading, and achievement produces leadership by example. Finally, controlling involves solving performance problems and streamlining employee productivity as well as controlling costs and taking preventative measures when necessary. This is an area Brian’s limiting style of approval could be a problem. The area of controlling is often not popular and involves some confrontation and situations where employees and colleagues will disagree. After taking the lifestyles inventory interpretation test my primary and secondary personal thinking styles are more apparent to me. I have scored the highest in percentile of Oppositional and Power styles and very closely followed by perfectionist and competitive styles. My percentile scores in these areas were 99% for oppositional, 99% for power, and 95% for competitive. Regarding the primary style, oppositional, it is a very close perception of who I am. On the Life Styles Inventory survey, I scored very high on the "Perfectionist", "Conventional", "Power" and "Competitive" styles of life. I strongly agree with this. The life Styles Inventory (LSI) is developed by Dr. J. Clayton Lafferty. LSI are measures 12 specific styles of patterns of thinking that can either help or hinder a person from reaching his or her potential. The 12 styles measures by LSI are organized into three general clusters: Constructive, Passive/Defensive, Aggressive/Defensive. Research has shown that the styles measures by the LSI are related to a number of indicators of effectiveness and success, including leadership effectiveness, management effectiveness, problem solving effectiveness, quality of interpersonal relations, salary, organizational level, individual health and well being, and organization culture.

Another authentic leadership skill I can improve upon is leading with my heart. Though I have great concern for my followers, leading with my heart can also mean being direct while still caring (Kruse, 2013). Furthermore, while leading with my heart, I should avoid worrying about “the social pecking order” (Yaacoub, 2016, p. 49) which makes it harder for me to make personal decisions. If I learn to better lead with my heart while being direct and honest, my team will likely feel more personally appreciated and respected.

The Life Style Inventory (LSI) assessment measures 12 styles of thinking. By studying results on these 12 styles of thinking one can determine leadership effectiveness of an individual. I took this assessment and will be discussing various topics about my assessment including personal thinking styles, impact on management style and genesis of personal styles.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. Controls are measuring sticks to see if the desired goals are being met. Successful managers create parameters for their employees and implement controls within a criteria to confirm if the job is being done to standard. Case in point, I give quarterly performance counseling’s to each subordinate in my department on performance, being efficient at the job and using problem solving techniques. Controls to an extent border along the lines of micromanaging, but it can also be used to emphasize how well the subordinate is doing too. All quarterly counseling’s are not corrective in nature, but it is a great assessment tool for exceptional job performance as well. The usage of controls is part of my responsibility as a supervisor to ensure the goals are being achieved to standard.
