This paper contains a full marketing plan for the Samsung Galaxy S4 model smart phone within the South African market. The paper describes the product and the current marketing situation including a SWOT analysis. It lists measureable objectives of this proposed marketing plan and provides decisions made and the reasons for the positioning strategy, product strategy, pricing strategy, distribution strategy and marketing communications strategy.

Who are Samsung’s competitors in this market?
The smartphone device market in South Africa is quite different to many other markets in the world in that Blackberry still holds the majority of the market. Research conducted by World Wide Worx, a leading independent technology research and strategy organization, estimates that as at March 2013 there were 12 million activated smartphone devices in South Africa (mybroadband.co.za). This is shared as follows, 40% Blackberry, 30% Nokia, 15% Samsung and 7% Apple.
In the broader South African smartphone market Samsung is a follower but in the premium high end smartphone market Samsung is a leader as the Galaxy SIII was the best selling high-end Smartphone in South Africa of all time (mg.co.za), selling 200,000 units in the nine months

Samsung Electronics is a South Korean multinational electronic company with headquarter located in Suwon, South Korea. According to Forbes (2016), Samsung is the world’s second largest information technology company with $177 billion in revenue. Samsung is a major manufacturer of electronic components such as lithium-ion batteries, semiconductors, chips, flash memory, and hard drive devices for clients such as Apple, Sony, Nokia, and HTC (About Samsung, n.d.). Samsung has been the world’s largest television manufacturer since 2016 and the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones and smartphones since 2011 through its Samsung Galaxy line of devices (Garside, 2013). However, the primary focus for this discussion will be the distribution strategies for its Galaxy S series smartphones.
Samsung products range from mobile devices, TV, audio and video, home appliances, cameras, PC and peripherals and print solutions (Samsung 2014). This essay will predominantly look closely at Samsung’s mobile phones market.

Most people have owned or own a Samsung device or Apple device. You may know these two amazing companies have been competing versus each other for the longest on trying to produce the better phone. Both companies produce the hottest smartphones on the market with all the latest features, from fingerprint scanner to waterproof technology. Even though they are the phones that are more expensive they are expensive for a reason, and the reason is because they have the latest technology and are built with great quality. I personally like Samsung over Apple because Samsung freely lets you organize and personalize your own phone, while Apple only really lets you change the wallpaper.
The target market for the iPhone 4S is broad-based, but typically consists of middle class or wealthier, educated adults, and the product is also skewed towards the urban and suburban audiences. The product has a premium position in the market, with sharper design, a higher price and high end features. The competitive advantages lie partly in the quality of the product itself, the number of apps available for the platform, and in the Apple brand name. Given these, the five different marketing options will be evaluated.
