The opening scene of Remember the Titans creates chaos by showing that this film is about white and black power not mixing. Violent disruption is highlighted within the first minutes which shows many disputes in the streets of people throwing chairs through windows and police all over people holding them back with white people on one side and the black people on the other as if they are going to start a huge fight with the black people protesting holding up signs about equal rights. The colours show that this is an older film when black people had no rights as of white man’s view because the colours look like something from the seventies. The music is also from the seventies which is fast paced just like the music in Rocky and the Karate Kid …show more content…
In the beginning of the film there was a lot of hatred towards each race as the whites and blacks didn’t get along well with each other, little did they know that they would both be put on the same football team and have to participate in a camp if they were serious about joining the team. The person that they were sitting next to in the bus was the person they would be bunking with for the next two weeks and it happened that both Gerry and Julius were both in the same room. The issue that started the conflict between the two was Julius had hung a “black people power” poster on the wall which Gerry found intimidating. This resulted in Gerry attempting to remove the poster with force. This is what sparked the fight between the two and before long the entire team jumped in and fought for their own race in a tiny little dorm. As each day went on, they got to know each other bit by bit and would come closer to becoming friends probably because of the fact that they were the two head captains of the team and had to set an example for the rest of their own race and get them to all become friends, otherwise the team would fall apart. By the end of the film they were very close and would hang out all the time, until they had an altercation and just
“How do Boaz Yakin and Tate Taylor depict historical content to develop the theme of racism in Remember the Titans and The Help in similar and different ways?”
Remember the Titans is directed by Boaz Yakin and stars Denzel Washington as Coach Herman Boone, Will Patton as Bill Yoast, Ryan Hurst as Gerry Bertier, and Wood Harris as Julius Campbell. The movie takes place in 1971, at T.C Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The high school had recently integrated, where both Americans and African Americans conjoin to the same school. The main social issue in the movie was racism, because the Americans didn’t want to be a part of the same school as the African Americans, but they play on the same football team. They also didn’t want to be coached by Herman Boone, because he was a different race from them and Coach Yoast coached most of the white players. Remember the Titans teaches us we can put our differences aside and work together as a team to achieve a goal.
So the first cultural conflict in Glory road is colored people versus white people and it’s the most important issue in the movie. In the movie blacks are treated prolly just because of their skin color. A really sad scene from the movies was when Texas Western went to eat at a dinner and when Ched went to use the restroom he was jumped by three white men. Another reason from Glory road was when Texas Western went to play other colleges they were usually welcomed by other schools by throwing trash at the Texas Western players in addition when the players names were be called for the starting line up

The tension begins when Radio Raheem ask for 20 D batteries but the owner doesn’t understand what he is saying so he replies by saying 20 C energizers. This part of the scene shows that the African-Americans and the Asians do not understand each other and can’t get along with each other. This scene reflects most of the movie as we see throughout the movie how the African-Americans butt heads with not only the Asians but also with other race and ethnic backgrounds. The dialogue of the scene shows each of the characters cussing at each other and how they feel about each other. The Dialogue shows how the African-Americans in the movie don’t respect these people businesses even if the business are doing something positive in the African-American neighborhood. In the movie we hear the song “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy played in most of the movie but in this scene Radio Raheem is listen to this song in his Boom-Box and then out the nowhere his stereo batteries start to die. The batteries dying shows him losing a piece of him because when he listen to his music he is calm but when his music stops he gets aggravated and
Another important role that is established by one of the players is the role of the magnet that finally brings the black kids and the white kids together. This role is taken on by Louie Lastik. He takes this role when he’s the first one to approach the other black kids and make friends with them. He shows us his role when he sits down net to the black kids
Prejudice, as defined in psychology, involves holding a negative attitude towards the members of a group, based merely on their membership of that group. Any group can be the focus of prejudice. A person, who is prejudiced against a certain group, has a tendency to overlook the individual characteristics or behavior of members of the group to whom he/she is prejudiced, merely because they belong to that group. In the film ‘Remember the Titans’ (2000), prejudice is portrayed in several ways, but mainly focuses on the discrimination of the African-Americans. One form of prejudice, which if frequently revisited in the film, is racism. Racism occurs when prejudice and discrimination are directed at people who are members of a particular
In the movie Remember the Titans, the plot shows clear examples of race and ethnicity discrimination and Sexual orientation discrimination. One of the first scenes that show the issue of race and ethnicity discrimination is when the coach (Coach Boon) house is being vandalized by the “white players” when they throw rocks at his house. It is evident that the players don’t want the Coach or his Family in the neighborhood due to the colour of their skin. Another example is When Julius walks into the room and is completely ignored by a group of White girls when he says Hi to them, the nature of the movie suggests that if Julius has been of Lighter Skin, the girls would have reacted differently to him by saying Hi back. An example of Sexual Orientation discrimination in the movie is when they refer to a male player as Sunshine as he is homosexual, it is even more evident in the scene where the group of football players are uncomfortable around the character Ronnie as he is homosexual. The behaviours shown in the movie are learnt behaviours, the discrimination shown in the movie shows that white characters are acting on their judgment against the black characters with no substance behind their behaviours, and no real reason for them to be acting that way. It is clear that Discrimination is a
Racism, prejudice, compassion and love is what you get when you break down Remember the Titans. The movie deals with a high school football team that's been integrated and the team has to learn to deal with each other. This is true not just for the players but the coaches as well. Remember the Titans is a film from 2000 displaying a true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The movie highlights the relationships of the black and white people, and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It brings up a number of questions throughout, of what is right and what is wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting movie to watch. I have seen this movie many times, and each time I feel like I get something new out of it. It is a movie that can be used as a teaching tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at that time, but social psychology concepts through real life

“Remember The Titans” by Boaz Yakin is a visual where both the African Americans and All Americans still live in a time where racism was stronger and more open then today. When the school board decides to integrate both schools the white community doesn’t take it to well and a Young African youth is slain which causes uproar in the city. The uniting of both schools goes on and we as audience can see the hostility shown towards both races. It’s not until the football team and leaders unite do we start seeing a change in the community. The respect for an individual isn’t based upon his color but his soul. The uniting of a team brings a community bound by racism and hatred together for the greater good.
