This science lesson was taught as a stand alone lesson because Ms. Bell’s classroom is currently studying the regions in social studies. However, we decided science would be a nice change of pace for a day. The goal was for students to construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. Specifically, we focused on being able to recognize how camouflage helps certain animals survive and to interpret what an animal needs or requires to be safe in their environment. Based on the standards, this was a one of the simpler ones that could be covered in one lesson. The actual content and discussion in this lesson went very well. The students …show more content…
I worked very hard to plan for instruction that supported every student (Standard 7). I have many behavioral students and below grade level students, as well as an ELL student. I wanted to make sure my lesson eliminated barriers, rather than created them. I used my knowledge of learners to prepare for techniques that would help these students. For example, I had key words written on the board and colors written on the sheets. I also utilized modeling and group work to ensure everyone stayed together and no one was left behind. It is important to me to ensure that all of my students had the opportunity to succeed. I also had to ensure that I practiced professional learning and engaged in ethical practice (Standard 9). I felt this was most implemented when my lesson was going astray. It would have been easier to show how I was feeling, but instead I had to remain professional and calm. I also noticed this when students were asking questions. What seems “simple” to me is not always as easy to understand for my students. It was important for me to focus on how my actions and expressions would be perceived by my students, my professor and my cooperating teacher. I did my best to utilize leadership and collaboration in my lesson (Standard 10). I made sure to scaffold questions in order to ensure my students were learning. I used questioning to keep
This week I learned about differe\irente instruction. I also learn how to implement a lesson plan to meet the needs for each students in the classroom. Each child learning style is different one child might understand the problem one way and then another child might solve the problem a whole different way. I learned about exceptional children and how they need intensive learning and individualize learning. That why it is important to observe and know each individual child so you can support them to the bset of their ability. My host teacher used different strategies to help the students understand the problem. When I did my lesson plan if was a challenge and time consumer.I likle how the lesson plan met the needs of the children. The teacher put the students in different groups so they acn help each other learn. Sometimes children learn best and better from other children. My host teachger explain to me that
The first NC Standard states that teachers need to demonstrate leadership. Leadership means that one leads by example, shows respect and motivates people to do their best. This kind of leadership can be in the classroom or outside of the classroom. It also has to do with working with your fellow teachers to make sure your students have to the best education experience one can give them. When I was at Sunset Park and Codington elementary schools, I saw the teachers show leadership in similar and different ways. Both teachers showed leadership by working with other teachers. At Sunset Park, the two teachers did lessons on butterflies then released the butterflies at then need of the week. Through the respect the two teachers showed each other, their students were able to see an
My time spent in the Clinical setting, so far, has been extremely inciteful as to how to become a better educator in a classroom setting. Through the data I collected I was able to connect Borich’s Seven Variables of learning to the students. By being in the clinical setting for nearly two months, I have been exposed to new ways of thinking when it comes to structuring a classroom and instructing a classroom. Within this reflection you will find out how I would better plan an effective lesson for the pupils in my future classroom. You will also discover what I will do about certain issues in the classroom and how I will address/fix them.
When I am developing units plans, I ensure that all my lessons are deeply infused with the Common Core learning standards. I am also a firm believer in incorporating differentiated instruction. I am able to differentiate through analyzing test results. From those results, I design tiered assignments to give students the appropriate level of material to complete. I deem it is important to know all of my students as individuals. When planning, my students interest and learning styles are taken into consideration. I have also enhanced the phonics based reading program, by infusing whole language learning. I enjoy creating hands on centers such as sensory bin dig, book box, and egg addition. When I find that students are having difficulty, I reach out to my colleagues for ideas. I especially do so for my students with IEP's. I regularly communicate with the speech, SETTs, and OT teachers. By taking these steps, I can execute lessons that are curriculum driven and
In this paper, I will reflect on my new knowledge and skills that I have acquired regarding teacher leadership, supportive communication and collaboration. I will also reflect on practical application of these skills, such as assessing the needs, problems or issues, and creating the action plan to address the issues. In the end, I will define how teacher leadership can positively affect student learning and achievement.
How will you differentiate or adapt your lesson to meet the diverse needs for EL, special needs, and academically underachieving or high achieving
How did your instruction support learning for the whole class and students who need greater support or challenge?
In general, how successful was the lesson? Did the students learn what you intended for them to learn? How do you know?
It shows the students are engaged on the lesson, and they are responding in a manner way without causing commotion in the classroom. Also, it is a great way to evaluate that the students were paying attention and understanding the lesson.
InTASC Standard 7 states the requirements for effectively planning instruction. First of all, the educator must ensure that every student meets learning goals. The instruction the teacher plans needs to fit the needs of every student so that no child is put at a disadvantage. Every student should have an equal opportunity to benefit from every lesson. In order to plan such effective instruction, an educator needs to take several areas into account. First of all, a teacher should draw upon past experience with and knowledge of the content, so that the students have a foundation to stand on. Students will feel more comfortable and open going into the lesson if they already know something. Secondly, an effective teacher needs to consider
As teachers, we would never consider teaching an entire unit to our students without frequently checking on their understanding, monitoring their progress, providing additional support, and finally evaluating their performance. It is important to hold ourselves to the same level of accountability. Leadership teams are responsible and accountable for the progress that the students make under their supervision and care.
on November 1, 2017, I taught my second science lesson at Maverick Elementary School. It took place during my Kindergarten class’ usually scheduled science lesson. This week my class was going over the 5 senses, so my lesson fit perfectly into their curriculum. My lesson was about using the 5 senses to predict what an unknown object was in a closed bag. I chose to do this lesson because my students were learning how to “use senses as a tool of observation to identify properties and patterns of organisms, objects, and events in environment” (TEK K.4B). My objective was for the students to use their senses to identify an object and describe the different properties of objects accurately.
St Marys holds an Inspire Science Program advocating the learning of science for primary children (year 6 ). It was a day spent in a local primary school teaching them about DNA and Forensic science.
Teaching can be a challenge, you never know what to expect and each classroom will be unique. However, you will always have to be prepare for teaching in a situation you may not be comfertable with. Educating students and practicing proper knowledge on subjects such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation and disability are vital in creating a safe and respectful classroom for all. School is often looked upon as a place of security for students and it is our job as teachers to help maintain that status.
Considering my science lesson is part of a new unit, the preceding lesson is unrelated due to the subject involving heredity. The new unit focuses on Earth’s place in the universe while the first segment teaches students about the different components of the universe. Students should have some prior knowledge on Earth’s environment and weather from previous years, which would allow them to identify Earth from other planets. However, if a student lacks knowledge in that area, my science lesson will also cover Earth’s characteristics.
