Ships were known as battleships during WW1. They were covered in extensive armor and large-caliber guns attached to their hulls dealt substantial damage.
The war in Europe during world war 1 had various types of items, from weapons to tanks. With many artifacts throughout the war, I narrow my photos to two, which are of a tank and a battleship. Tanks throughout the war caused major impacts throughout the war. Despite traveling at a meager four miles per hour, it was a devastating hulk of steel that marched endlessly toward the enemy . The tanks in world war 1 played an extremely important role to defeat the enemy on the battlefield. Another thing important in the war in Europe were the use of ships. The first type of ships are battleships,
The new weapons used in WW1 included: The Rifle used by every country involved in the war, The machine gun, Gas bombs which included chlorine in the early stages of the war then mustard gas in the later stages of the war, Flamethrowers, a Zeppelin or blimp which was a massive aircraft used by the Germans, Tanks 1st used in the battle of Somme, Planes which could dispense bullets at an incredible rate, drop bombs and even support a cannon, and submarines with torpedoes, to make easy pickings on the biggest ships. The rifle, machine gun, and the airplane were invented before WW1 but were upgraded into war machines that were devastating for soldiers.
War has always had the tendency to quicken the advancement and development, and World War 1 with its strange conflict of nineteenth and twentieth century thoughts and advances. One of the most important technological creations that were created during World War 1 was the U-boats or the German Submarines. The damage of any enemy transportation by German U-boats was an excellent reason in both World Wars I and II. German U-Boats were very important and one of the best technological achievements and were in charge of destroying around half of all the food and supplies transported by the British Merchant Navy. U-boats played a very important part in World War I.
The Germans had sent out U-boats because they simply could no longer afford a purely defensive naval strategy. The Germans were the first to use torpedoes in battle to make their U-boats even more deadly. A torpedo is self-propelled underwater missile launched from a tube located on the deck or inside the hull of a warship. Torpedo tubes were first built into submarines in 1885 by the Swedish armaments manufacturer, Thortsen Nordenfelt. Torpedoes in 1914 carried a contact-triggered explosive warhead and had a range of 10,000 meters and could travel at 41 knots.1 However, their ideal range was about a kilometer because they tended to be inaccurate over longer distances.
Tanks were a major part of World War II. Many countries had their own tanks which they used in different strategies during the war. These vehicles were invented long before there was the technology of World War II. The Germans were known for their heavy class tanks, while the Americans were recognized for their medium Sherman tanks. The Allied forces would not have won World War II if it were not for their tanks.
World War One, one of the most deadliest wars in history, caused massive damage to countries in Europe. During World War One, the technology advanced, with many creations were created, that caused a high amount of death and destruction. The U-Boat, also known as a submarine, is a underwater boat that the Germans used during World War One. The Tank was developed in World War One to help make crossing no man’s land easier. Poison gas was used in World War One as a new tactic to kill people in the trenches
The German U-Boats were like a submarine that was a lot more advanced than those that were built by other nations; and they were the first submarines made by the Germans. The U-boat was 214 feet long, it could carry 35 men, and 12 torpedoes at a time. And it could travel underwater for 2 hours at a time. With these Germany had a lot of success against the British warships. (https://www.britannica.com/technology/U-boat)
Weapons in WW1 could decide who would win and who would lose. Newer weapons were brought into the War constantly as they were the most efficient in destroying and making other weapons useless. Making them more powerful for this reason making the death count rise double- time, however, not for long…
The first tanks came with the internal combustion engine and caterpillar tracks. These, however, were quite unreliable and broke down very frequently. The naval force devised bigger, stronger ships with bigger guns. Their new and improved submarines were imperative in this war. They aided in the strategy of war of attrition, or breaking the enemy down by attacking its personnel and supplies.[viii]
The USS Greer was the first US Navy ship to fire on a German ship, three months before the United States officially entered World War II on September 4, 1941. The incident was taken place during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The ship was approximately 125 miles southwest of Reykjavik, Iceland, it was carrying mail to the U.S. Marines stationed in Iceland. It was named after Rear Admiral James A. Greer, a Civil War veteran and commander of the European Squadron from 1887 to 1889. The Greer incident occurred because it was a case of mistaken evidence that was not reported just told by President Roosevelt at numerous press conferences without giving the American people full facts. As the Greer made its way through the North
Warfare is a grim and horrible thing. Napoleon’s wars cost hundreds of thousands of lives for example. Yet, less than one hundred years later, Europe would discover the full horror of modern war. The technology of World War I made that conflict incredibly agonizing and prolonged the conflict, costing many lives. In the end, technology also produced some startling results.
With World War I being the first modern war, armies could do nothing more than dig trenches in defense. What made World War I the first modern war is all the new technologies that came with it. Technologies like gas masks, powered flight, and U-boats affected the war in a major way. During the war, both sides used poison gas against their enemies. The gas could destroy organs, cause blisters, or even kill the soldiers. Gas masks filtered the air to help keep soldiers protected from the gas. At first, aircrafts were used for spotting enemy positions, however, as the war went on they became used for bombing and fighting. Lastly, German submarines called U-boats were used to sink supply ships and later used to sink Allied and neutral ships.
B. Thesis: The First World War stimulated the greatest changes in warfare because it brought about new technology and industry development, advancement in science, and improved infrastructure and communication; essentially the First World War combined the legacies of the French and Industrial Revolutions and set the pattern for twentieth century warfare. ii. The industrialization in Europe and the new technology escalated the power of the WWI as compared to the other wars fought across the world there before.
World War I was the first time that submarines were widely used in warfare. The revolutionary technology was initially brought into the war by Germany, who called these submarines Unterseeboot. The initial intention for using submarines were coastal defense, blockades of enemy ships, and lookouts. The earliest wartime vessels were rudimentary and used diesel engines, giving them a 4,000 mile range, however, they moved very slowly and could not stay under the surface for long. This was a limitation of the optional war strategies available to the submarines. Most German U-boats carried defensive missiles and also included anti-aircraft guns. The U-boats were incredibly stealthy, staying submerged until locking onto a target. Then the submarines
First, we will discuss ground vehicle advances. The Jeep was invented in World War Two. It was used as basic transportation for troops. After the war, the Jeep became more popular and was then used as a production vehicle for the public. Tanks of World War One were very primitive and very ineffective. In World War Two, the tank was one of the most important vehicles used. Leading up to World War Two, tanks were made more powerful, faster, lighter, and stronger. Tank warfare was very important in World War Two. All countries involved in the war were producing their own models of tanks. By the end of the war, the Allies had developed a new kind of tank. It had no big guns on it. It was a troop transportation vehicle that was heavily armored. Transportation vehicles were very important in the war. Without transportation, there is no efficient way to move troops. All of these vehicles were very important in the history of war.
Tanks made a huge difference in world war one contributing to outcome of the western front. The British were the first people to use the tank in World War one. The Germans soon followed the British creating bigger and more modified tanks. The tanks were used in war because it was believed they could drive over barbed wire and opposition trenches without having to stop. The first British tanks was called “Little Willie.”
