After a moment of hesitation, I decided to look at Gemma for direction. Gemma nodded and I figured that was my confirmation to go up. Promptly, I began to climb the grand staircase, though I kept my eyes locked on the grandmother. For some odd notion, I was half worried Mrs. Worthington would pounce on top of me.
“Thanks,” I said, reaching down and grabbing the bag.
It seemed Gemma could sense the tension between us and quickly she added, “You know, grandmother was just telling me how grateful she was to have someone come and take our oranges. We have a lot in the back, and many often go to waste.”

“Unlike…his,” she motioned a finger towards me.
“What boxes do you need help with?” I asked reluctantly.
The old woman’s eyes glittered with glee.
“Oh, just a few upstairs,” she purred, her smile stretching once again. “But we don’t need your help today. A special truck will be coming tomorrow to dispose of the items. But, we can count on you to come tomorrow and help us out...correct?”
“Uh, sure,” I said, but even as I agreed I hadn’t committed to it in my mind. There was something about this grandmother that I didn’t like. It was more than just her spooky appearance. It was the way she moved, spoke, she seemed aggressive, hostile.
“Good, now run along, boy, and take those oranges back to your mother.”
A tone of condescension was evident in her voice, but quickly I shrugged it off, and with her invitation, I didn’t hesitate to leave.
“See you around,” I nodded to Gemma, and hurriedly I rushed out the door, clutching hold of the brown paper bag.
Immediate relief washed over me as I stepped outside of the house. The whole thing felt creepy and bizarre, aside from Gemma. But her grandmother seemed very strange. It was abnormal the way she had scrutinized me, like I was some piece of fresh meat. She didn’t have plans to eat me. Did she? I didn’t plan on returning, only if it was truly necessary, and if it would help Gemma.
