In the article from LA Times “Sleep Deprivation Has Genetic Consequences, Study Finds,” Eryn Brown claims that being sleep deprived can be hazardous to our health. Brown addresses that people who don’t get a consistent eight hours of sleep, are most likely to be obese and suffer cardiovascular woes. He supports his claim by subjecting some volunteers to help prove his argument, analyzing blood from the volunteers, and looking at changes in the RNA. Brown writes it in a serious tone to make his us more aware of the effects of sleep deprivation. This is evident in paragraph twelve where it says, “ They found that losing sleep changed rhythmic patterns in the way genes turn on and off…”, and in paragraph six where it states some of the health risks. In order to have us understand the importance of sleep deprivation, Brown demonstrates what happens when we are sleep deprived by having volunteers get only six hours of sleep. He also demonstrates what happens when we aren’t sleep deprived by having volunteers get ten hours of sleep. For example, the RNA tests showed that when we are sleep deprived, our genes involved inflammation, immunity and protein damage, and tissue harm was occurring. Brown is effective on bringing his point across because he provided a lot of evidence to make his claim more impactful on his readers.
Nurse's fatigue, burnout, and tiredness decrease capacity to perform at work due to cumulative loss of sleep. Not much has been done about this. I have heard of many senior nurses talking about how many hours they work either by choice or due nursing shortages in the unit where they work. They could not leave colleagues stranded. We are not living in a society that is pro nursing but is pro business. The mentality of upper management and the hospital board is that if we can work with fewer nurses and get the job done, the hospital budget will be better regardless of how it will impact nursing or patient care.
Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders among college students is an area of concern among researchers, because of the relationship between quality sleep and quality of academic performance. The factors that have been shown to affect sleep quality or sleep patterns include staying up late, using social networking, and partying. This research uses a simple, unique survey instrument. A total of fifty college students participated in the study. Results substantiate the hypothesis that social media use is heavy among college students, and that the use of social media will be correlated with less sleep and less effective study habits. Future research may discover ways of helping students develop more balanced approaches to their academic, online, and social lives.

Sleep is simply defined as the body’s rest cycle – a time to recharge. The widely accepted metric for normal or sufficient sleep is about 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. When this metric is not met, either through total sleep loss or accumulated sleep debt, the effect can be dire, “Sleep deprivation results in poor memorizing, schematic thinking, which yields wrong decisions, and emotional disturbances such as deteriorated interpersonal responses and increased aggressiveness” (Orzeł-Gryglewska 95). Obesity is a deadly and horrible disease; however, it can be prevented. Physical activity is the “cure” to the obesity epidemic. Obesity is the result of “‘caloric imbalance’ -- too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed” according to Childhood Obesity Facts. Physical activity burns off a majority of the excess calories one may have. PE classes do an efficient job of getting students physically active without overworking them, or taking away from freetime after school. Therefore HCSD should keep the current physical education requirements and not replace it with sports.
