This group project was very interesting. It was cool to examine the group teamwork that was involved and to see the process that was involved. I’ve worked with many different groups, but have never really looked at the way we operate and communicate. From what I observed I was able to see what was effective during our project, and the specific roles each person took control of.
When we started the small group talk amongst ourselves Lauren Hall started it all. She kind of took the lead with the project, which was very good. In the small group conversation we had a communication network that could be considered an All-channel. An All-channel occurs when “each member may communicate with any other member, allowing for the greatest member participation“(DeVito,

As a group we all “preserved the dignity and respect of all members”, “Listen empathically”, “Seek out emphasize common ground”, and “Value diversity and differences” (DeVito, 265). Since we all followed these general rules we were able to complete the project with no serious problems. There was only one thing I believe that could be considered close to conflict, but never fully developed into one. While at the face to face communication Samantha was very quiet. She was working on her commercial the majority of the time. Due to what she was doing, and no one else in the group not knowing how to work the computer system she was using, the other members of the group couldn’t help as much as we would have liked to. Fortunately Samantha was able to finish the commercial, and as group we had all the pieces …show more content…
Due to her being an emergent leader I believe the situational approach to leadership would show the technique she followed. This is because she focused on “accomplishing the task at hand and ensured the satisfaction of the members” (DeVito, 235). She demonstrated this by starting the group conversation, and leading it to the delegation stage. Once we did this we all met in person. Once in a group she was very vocal and helped everyone improve their parts of their project making the presentation much better, and keeping everyone very satisfied. To me this is what a great leader does. They empower their fellow teammates to do better. “Leadership is defined in two very different ways” (DeVito, 233). The definition that she very much followed is this, “leadership is the process of empowering others; the leader is the person who helps others to maximize their potential and to take control of their lives” (DeVito, 233). This is exactly how she acted throughout the project, which improved its final
Participating in group activities have never really been my thing, but this project was a great experience. I got the chance to meet individuals with different problem solving solutions than I, and the people I communicate with daily. This project helped me gain communication skills amongst others when trying to make a decision, and the process of coming to an agreement. The knowledge, skills, and abilities I demonstrated throughout the weeks have grown and boosted my confidence when partaking in a group setting. I learned that people are easily offended and it may be hard to steer away from it, but it can be done. Teamwork has always been easy for me because I offer more help than needed to my teammates. The panel discussion taught me that not everyone one wants help, but the opportunity for their opinions to be considered. Each tool I have gained from this experience will make it easier for me to engage with others in the near future in a mannerly way whether it is for a grade or not.
Thank you for your post. I found it very informative. I too found That small group discussions are very beneficial to the student's education. Small groups discussions allow the teacher to prove those students with one-on-one attention in helping them further their education for that topic. Discussions allow students to not only ask the teachers for questions for clarification on the material but to the students as well. I am a firm believer that students learn great from one another. Discussions allow students to learn from one other. Students are able to communicate the information in ways that relate more to the students learning. Do you think these small group discussions are something you would bring into your classroom?
Communication between group members was essential to complete this project well and in a timely matter. We used the GroupMe phone application to discuss developments to the project and obstacles encountered. When group members could not meet during class, I made sure to get them caught up through the GroupMe app immediately. I feel my leadership and organization was necessary to get certain group members to contribute to the project. Overall, I was satisfied with the group
I was reluctant to tackle the amount of group work that was required, but I found it to be most pleasant working with my peers who were excited as I was to investigate the jail system in Dutchess county. Contrarily, I always found that doing assignments myself was always better than the alternative—group projects. I was never usually paired with individuals that had the same work ethic that I had, and often found them difficult to accomplish. However, doing this presentation with the group I was assigned with was a positive experience for me.
We are also in this stage because we finally came up with a group name. We did our first presentation and equally agreed on a topic after having a second group meeting about it which went smoothly because after discussing other options we all decided to do Bullying as our first presentation. We also agreed that we will do our value presentation on the good deed of good will. All these decisions were not agreed upon till after the first meeting. We made other recommendations and this one we came to a conclusion would be the best approach for us because of our busy schedules. I also think we did have a bit of the Storming stage because of a few disagreements on initial topics, but if we didn’t have these few disagreements then we would not have come up with a better topic to do on the formal discussion presentation. When we did our first presentation on Bullying, the final product was very well worked out. We all came up with sources and references, though I know I forget to name the exact reference it had come from for everyone to understand. We had really good skits prior to leading up to our sub topic. The group had enjoyment and excitement when doing the skits along with informing our audience. We all had equal say in talking about bullying to our audience. In my opinion, no one said way more than the other, and we try to respect each other when we were
In this paper, I will reflect the process of improvement which is about what and how I improved since the class started. Learning Small Group Communication class is a new and interesting experience for me. During the class, I start to know more professional knowledge and how I could work well in my small group.
My initial response to our group project is that I thought we did well, especially given the fact that all four of us are very different people. Not only did we have very diverse interests and ideas, but we also had a slight language barrier in our group. I ultimately do not believe that this caused any harm to our group. The hardest part of the project may have been choosing a topic. Initially our choice was to do a response to the Koran. Although I would have enjoyed something that is intellectually stimulating and will continue to be debated, especially recently in the media, it was important that I took that off the table and suggested Cars instead.
Working in a group setting can cause strain on some individuals, but it also can be helpful to the same individual. Group projects are a major component to both negative and positive effects. There are then easy and hard components of working in a group setting, that can range from person to person. The easiest part of working in a group project was commitment, trust, and motivation. In our group everyone was committed toward getting a great grade and wanting to work for that. Group projects usually tend to have people rely on others to do the work. For this project, for example, I believe my group did not have that issue. We all worked together, splitting parts up for the presentation, including the PowerPoint, annotated bibliography, and
Communication is a very important feature for groups. It helps members understand each other and explain themselves. Our group was strong in the communication field because we understood each other and gave every individual time to contribute ideas. The metaphor that we used was a brilliant collaboration by all four of us. One member insisted on using a rollercoaster as an example, it helped us get a totally different perspective on our topic. The members were of different countries and spoke different languages; however, they tried their best to express their opinions and experiences. The topic that my group chose was "Life in the United States", this topic was quite easy for us to talk about. Since all of us are international students,
Through the course of this semester, each member of our group has developed different roles and these roles have played an important part in our group. However, it was not until the peer evaluations assignment in the end of the semester that we realized the major roles we have played in our small group communication, but we realized it over the whole semester. According to the list of informal roles that group members can assume by Benne and Sheats, our group leader Qihong Zheng is the recorder and group observer. Jingting Sun is the orienter (summarizer) and Standard setter. Yu Ge is the coordinator and compromiser. Zhe Su is the elaborator and encourager. Jiaxin Li is the opinion seeker and follower. Tianyi Huang is the energizer and gatekeeper.
Throughout the duration of Small Group Communications (COMM 231), I have really enjoyed this class itself. The material learned in the class was not hard to grasp and can be applied to my future career and college life. The actual assignments from the class were difficult for me to complete. Blending my talents with someone else’s is just not how I want to be graded on an assignment. It is as though I have to depend on someone else to determine my grade that just is not fair to me. The group projects and papers were just not my cup of tea. Personally, I disliked every one of the group assignments; however, I still participated and held up my weight in during each of them. From the first project to the last, I saw myself grow from a participant-observer
To evaluate my development of these skills are not so hard. I think that my performance was not as bad as I thought. Firstly, in my opinion understanding group mate feelings was way easier than accomplishing body language gestures. Client (group mate) face tells everything about his/her mood. Secondly, I tried to think about every step before doing SHOVELER while I was in a helper role. However, it was too hard to complete the challenge correctly and I tend to believe that only practice makes perfect. It means that by the time I would not need to think about all these steps and would do it instantly without hesitation. In that period of time it was not enough to learn at least a small part of body language
First I’d like to say, this group project is a little more difficult than the other group projects because while those depended more on a certain topic (Coachella, Streaming services), this one is focusing on our own group history. It’s easier to focus on one topic with your group, it is more difficult to work on a group project about your group.
This group project was interesting. I tried to approach this experience with the intention to have a new experience. To do this I had to leave some of my default behaviors behind. Occasionally, however, some of my defaults would pop back up again. Being that this project was for a leadership class I, also, tried to take some active leadership roles as well as some active followership roles. It turned out that the latter was more difficult than the former. I have learned a few key lesson from this experience and I hope to take those tools and use them in future projects.
By no means did this project move smoothly from start to finish. During my brief time, here at Bryant University I have worked and lead in various group projects, this group was by far the most efficient and well-rounded group I have been apart of. However, we did not even come close to our potential.
