According to many such as Reed-Danahay, Pierre Bourdieu, a French sociologist of the 20th century is recognized as being among the most instrumental sociologists of our epoch. According to Bourdieu, one’s existence is not merely to exist but in reality is to find existence within a social context in order to find recognition. According to Bourdieu, individuals strengthen and reproduce their social status within a specific class through the use of cultural and social capital. Social capital is defined as one’s association with important connections or involvement within society whereas cultural capital is outlined as an individual’s level of knowledge, experiences and education. Cultural capital which is used as ones knowledge about fashion, how well one knows the latest trends and history of fashion is essential to be considered as a key person within the field of fashion. Outsiders and insiders are also distinguished through behavior, their gestures and postures which are able to separate them from the outsiders. The arrangement and setting of the seats at the fashion show itself shows the positions of class within the field. The way members are seated at fashion shows show their significance of the social level within the system, thus representing the representatives within the field in the front rows. It has also been noted by Joanne Entwistle and Agnes Rocamora that in the fashion field the knowledge concerning art is more important than that of commerce. “Khan argues that catwalk shows’ only purpose is for them ‘to be noticed’ by the media and the public more generally, they are also for its participants to be noticed by other participants itself.” (Khan , 2000, pp. 114-127) Through this, Bourdieu’s concepts have been analyzed within the field of fashion which demonstrates that being recognized is vital for reproducing relationships and social status within the field of fashion through symbolic forms of capital instead of economic capital only.

If you look back through the past sixty years of fashion, you may notice a pattern.
Fashion has been a prominent aspect of a woman’s life throughout time. Women of different times and cultures have turned the routine of picking out clothes and putting together different ensembles into a sort of art, or a way to express and promote themselves. Many women also see fashion as part of their identity, or a way to manipulate the way people see them. What a woman wears can drastically change the way society views her - it can increase her chances of getting a job, or make her gain respect (or rejection) from her peers (Sika n.p.).
By incorporating his own sociological thinking and data, McLeod creates a whole new way of thinking about social class through his own research and findings. Most in particular to this is how he analyzed Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital and habitus. He states, “Bourdieu’s most important contribution to reproduction theory is the concept of social capital, which he defines as the general cultural background, knowledge, disposition, and skills that are passed from one generation to the next.” (McLeod 2009: 13). Fashion is a form of expression and with its ever changing ideas and trends it explores and creates an array of identities. As Bennett, A. (2005) states “Fashion…provides individuals with a key means through which to manage their identities in the context of everyday life”. I wish to explore how fashion has developed to which identities can be created by oneself and what is around in everyday life and culture that may influence choice in dress. Is fashion a form of agency or structure? I will continue these ideas around gender and in particular fashion photography and how in which gender is represented within the popular mainstream media. Looking at if fashion photography plays a role in challenging gender roles, and therefore creating new ideologies of identity. Or, does fashion photography intertwine with the rest of media in its representation and stereotyping of both genders? Helmut Newton will be used as a case study and the interpretation of his work. This study will also look at the theory behind androgyny and continuing by also looking at dandyism and if these concepts are being constantly played with in the fashion media.
In this essay I will explore the concept of Habitus put out by Bourdieu which is one of his most praised and referenced studies and whether is it still a useful tool in understanding the relationship between the social class and the self. I will do this by examining the theories of social class and examining them against Bourdieu’s work.
