Spalding first originated from the baseball hall of famer Albert Goodwill Spalding, who would play with the baseball equipment he made himself. After retiring from baseball in 1875, A.G. Spalding would enter and dedicate himself to the sporting goods industry, creating the company known as A.G. Spalding & Brothers (aka Spalding). After several successful years from his new company, Spalding would expand his company from baseball equipment manufacturing to the manufacturing of other major sporting goods, such as football and basketball equipment, which leads to the very successful product that i am about to discuss: Spalding branded Basketballs.
Spalding expanded their manufacturing business to basketball in 1894, where they would create the

This resulted in the creation of the NEVERFLAT basketball: a basketball that can remain inflated for a year. The company was back on business.
Spalding is marketing their basketballs exceptionally well because their product is the official ball of the NBA, which is the highest level of competition when it comes to the sport of basketball. Spalding uses this as a promotional tactic to convince customers that their product is better than the competitors, and that it should be purchased. Spalding basketballs also have the NBA logo engraved into their product. This differentiates their product from others and also makes customers believe that the product is legitimate. This is also how they position their product.
Today, Spalding basketballs still continues to be the most popular product out of all of the other competing products. Last year Spalding has said to have gained $90 million from sales. This is three times more than the average competitor. Spalding has also expanded globally, as their product is now the official ball of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), and the European Basketball
Air Jordan has been a huge part of the shoe game ever since they first came out in 1985. When Nike first saw Michael Jordan’s performance in college they immediately took action with him he got drafted into the NBA.. With all of his athletic ability not every game did he always play like the superstar he played like as we know him today. Yet his shoes still did sell pretty well for his first and second years playing in the NBA. As the years went by Michaels show performance got way better by averaging 30 points a game, and that’s when his shoes went crazy in selling. Everyday there were about several million pairs of Jordans selling each day. To think that Air Jordan could've never existed after Michael Jordan tried to get his agent to get him a deal with Adidas. But Nike pulled out and got Jordan to sign with them.(Elder, 2013) Nike noticed what a tremendous impact that Jordan had in the NBA. In matter of fact he played so good that Nike wanted to make him his own brand of shoes called Jordan. The first pair of shoes they made called the Air Jordan 1s weren’t selling or changing the game so they had to make a good color that opened people's eye.
It is commonly know that in basketball players only wear the brands such as Nike, Jordan, and Adidas. Then within these big three brands there are Kobe’s, LeBron’s, and Durant’s which are all under Nike, and D-Rose which is under Adidas. These of course are all big name professional basketball players who put out their own shoes under the brand they are sponsored by. Other than shoes basketball players also follow those brands for casual and practice wear such as hoodies, t-shirts, socks, sweats or track pants, and athletic shorts.
Nike was founded by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. The two men met when Bowerman was coaching track and field at the University of Oregon and Knight was a middle distance runner on his team. After earning an MBA from Standford, Knight returned to Oregon and approached Bowerman with an idea to bring in low priced, high-tech athletic shoes from Japan to compete in the United States athletic shoe market. With a handshake and a five hundred dollar investment by both men, Blue Ribbon Sports was born in 1964. BRS began importing shoes from Onitsuka Tiger, with Knight making sales at high school track meets and Bowerman
Owners James O’Hara and George A. Bayard wanted an area where the people of Pittsburgh could go and look around at wholesale and retail shops while enjoying all the wonderful tastes and cultures of Pittsburgh, food and they decided to do just that. In 1814, James and George established what we call today the “Strip District” that covered between 11th and 15th streets in Pittsburgh (“Strip District History,” n.d.). However, the official name was the “Northern Liberties of Pittsburgh” which was an area known as Bayardstown. A little over 20 years later, in 1837, the Northern Liberties linked with the city of Pittsburgh’s Fifth Ward, which was the first addition to the city’s earliest four wards (“Strip
Thesis: Basketball was invented by James Naismith in 1839. The objective was to throw the basketball into fruit baskets strapped to the railing of the gym balcony. As you can see the game of basketball has changed tons over the years and continues to grow.
Michael Jordan started the shoe brand air jordan this is Michael’s own brand of shoe that he created. Air jordan began in 1984 when Nike was struggling as a shoe company. At this time Nike was know for running shoes and the running shoe phenomenon was dying slowly. Nike was looking for another way to reinvent and make a new appealing segment of market. Nike looked to the NBA at a rookie Michael Jordan (http://airjordanshoeshq.com/air-jordan-brand-history/). Michael was already considering several other products. Nike felt that Jordan could help them turn things around. Michael was hoping to sign with converse the shoe in the NBA at the time or Adidas since he always loved Adidas and Converse. They were the shoes that he wore as a basketball
The revolutionary marketing campaign surrounding the unproven rookie was considered very urban for the time. During Nike’s early years, they had a difficult time pushing sales for their brand new athletic sneakers filled with air. This all changed seemingly overnight when the young Jordan took the basketball world by storm, dominating the opposition night in and night out. The Air Jordan I launched in 1985 in a black and red colorway to match the uniform of the Chicago Bulls. For $80, people could purchase a pair and experience what Nike called “human flight”. To add even more to the Nike and Jordan craze, the Jordan I failed to meet the National Basketball Association’s sneaker color standards at the time, due to a lack of white color. Jordan refused to stop wearing his own shoe, and the NBA began to fine him $5,000 per game that he wore the shoe. Because of Michael’s outstanding performance on the court, the Jordan I was flying off the shelves, selling out at almost every major retailer. These sales were more than enough for Nike, so they began to pay off the fines from the NBA. Then, the greatest sports ban in history took effect. On October 18th, 1985, the NBA officially banned the Nike Air Jordan I from the league, making it illegal to wear them for play. What was thought to be the death of the sneaker was the complete opposite. Nike pushed back
We are going to start with a bit of History, when the NBA League started marketing was a heavy and important part, due to the fact that there needed to be followers in order for the association to continue “living”. The 1960’s were a known for their purity and realism, followed by the
The year an NBA legend started his professional career, Michael Jordan. He established himself as a very dominant player averaging 28.2 points per game in his rookie year. Soon after that he won the rookie of the year award topping off his first season in the NBA. Outside of the court, Jordan signed off a major deal with Nike shoes called Air Jordans. Which influenced the fashion industry forever. Every company wanted to associate themselves with the next big star. Throughout the decade every company from Adidas to Reebok was throwing their names out there to get into the act this started the so-called “sneaker wars”.
By the end of 1963, the pair of men had sold $8,000 worth of Tiger shoes. Knight and Bowerman eventually hired a full-time salesman in Jeff Johnson after accumulating more than $1 million in sales. In 1971, the Nike swoosh was created by Caroline Davidson. In the late 1970’s, Blue Ribbon Sports permanently changed its name to Nike, and thus the clothing giant was born.
Nike Company started in 1984, in Portland Oregon by Tinker Hatfield, a former pole-vaulter and architect. Hatfield worked his way into the shoe industry. He got his idea from Converse’s in the early 1970’s slogan, Limousines for the Feet. In Hatfield believe our culture have a lot of interest in shoes, just as much as our culture back in the 1950’s were interested in owning cars. They began introducing their Nike shoes and products to the society by images of people and things like the production of the Nike Air Jordan. This product was named after Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is the best basketball player and biggest star at that time. In advertisement, Michael Jordan would show us a quick lay up to the goal

Phil Knight and his track coach Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964. The company started as being a distributor of Onituska Tiger athletic shoes which were imported from Japan. In 1971 they broke away from Onituska and created their own of shoes. The company was renamed, Nike. It became the largest worldwide seller of athletic shoes. They branched out and created various products lines; shoes, clothing, sporting goods and digital devices. They used celebrities to promote their products. The first athlete to wear and promote their show was runner Steve Prefontaine. Their now well know swoosh was first seen in the 1972 US Track and Field Trials. Every basketball player in high school wanted a pair of Michael Jordan’s,
Nike began as Phil Knight’s semester-long project to develop a small business, which included a marketing plan. This project was part of Phil Knight’s MBA course at Stanford University in the early 1960s. Phil Knight had been a runner at the University of Oregon in the late 1950s. His idea for his project was to develop high quality running shoes. He thought that high quality/low cost products could be produced in Japan and then shipped to the United States to be sold at a profit. His professor thought that Knight’s idea was interesting, but not much more than a project.
