I came into this class thinking that I would hate coming, hate speaking, and even hate learning about it. I found in my time in this class that I don’t hate speaking in front of others as much as I thought I did. I used to get very anxious and scared to present, I would literally shake and get all sweaty. The main thing this class taught me was confidence and that no one else wants to get up there anymore than I do. The first speech I gave was over the benefits of yoga. I was very nervous, but I was also very well prepared. I think being so well prepared is why I did so good on my first speech. In this class I learned how to prepare myself for upcoming speeches. When I would read the chapters in the book, I saw the tactics that were recommended to use when preparing for a speech and used them. I also learned a lot of terminology of things when reading the book that I did not know before. Before this class, I had no experience with outlines. I am glad that I did get to do a few outlines throughout the class because I can use that knowledge of how to make an outline in future speeches I have. I also learned what to look for when someone else is giving a speech. I learned to pay attention to how they are speaking, where they are looking, and how they are delivering the speech in general. In my past experience, with listen to speeches, I just wanted them to hurry up and be over, but it was interesting to pay attention to the things people do when they give a speech. My
My visual aid was the strongest part about my speech. I brought in the ingredients to make Tiramisu to show which brands I like to use for the recipe. I also prepared Tiramisu for the class as my hold interest technique. To relate the topic to the audience, I told them that they could make this recipe when they want to impress someone. My credibility was also convincing as I informed the class I had researched and compiled the best recipe. My introduction in general was concise and convinced the audience pay attention to the rest of my speech. I also thought my tone was conversational and not too formal.
This was something I was concerned about because when rehearsing for my speech I was worried the points were unbalanced but during the speech I did not feel like I spoke more about one topic than the other. I think it helped that I recognized this during rehearsing, so I was conscious of it during my presentation. Another thing I think I did well was my vocalized pauses. My um's & and's. Although I am aware that I still used vocalized pauses, I think it was a lot less frequent than in my first speech. I could definitely improve on a few things for my next speech. I feel that for my next speech I could improve on being relaxed and calming myself down. I need to remind myself I know what I am talking about and not get so tense and shaky during the presentation. Also I need to work on my eye contact. I looked at the crowd, but they were glances. And short ones. I need to extend my eye contact length and width. I need to focus and not reading from my cards and holding the eye contact for longer than a
- What I did well during my speech was looking at my audience. I was always facing my audience and have a quick view to my PowerPoint. I believe I did well on these aspects because I wasn’t like the other students always looking at the PowerPoint and not even facing the audience. I know this is a public speaking class and the point is to talk to our audience while facing them.
Generally speaking, the class discussion and fishbowl assignment were really helpful reminders regarding the upcoming speech. The class discussion was a reminder of the readings content, such as the focus on body language, organizational patterns, and
Doing the presentation alone was also a major confidence booster for the future as I learned to speak in front of the class on a topic which I would generally not speak of in my household, making it even more of a lesson for myself.
A crucial event that I attended this semester was the Woman In Isenberg Conference. At this conference I was given the opportunities to connect and meet with alumni. I, through much preparation, was able to successful network and have useful conversations with some of the woman at the event. This day long event really was focused on creating strong connections with not only our peers but other successful women in modern day business. Throughout the day there were many different chances to listen to panels or professional personal talk about what their passions were. One of the workshops that I attended at this event was the public speaking workshop. I especially liked this workshop because I’ve always had a hard time speaking in front of crowds.
The presentations we’ve done have improved my position as a speaker and listener. As I said before, my previous English classes never had me present. The only presentation I ever did in my previous years in Anaheim High School were in my single semester computer course. Other than that, none of the classes that I remember having made me present in any shape way or form that’s why the presentation have really improved my skills as a speaker. The first time we had to create a
In regards to the creation of my PowerPoint, I feel as though it served its purpose for speech 3. I brought in my information slowly through the use of animations and as a result, I do not think I overwhelmed the class with information. At the same time, I was able to read the information I included on the PowerPoint and expand upon that information as well without the class getting too far ahead of me. One part that I believe that truly helped me was the way in which I displayed and recited my definitions of addiction. Since I did not include the definition on the slide and instead only displayed the words, it cut down considerably on the clutter and allowed me to add in what I wanted. Because of this, I would certainly use the PowerPoint again, but I do think I would make a few minor modifications to the text and
One of my favorite experiences this past year was taking business communication and leadership and diversity. In my leaderships class I had the opportunity to do a presentation on a great leader and my leader was Dr. Martin Luther King jr. After presenting in front of the class about Dr. King I realize that I am very good at taking in front of people. At first this was hard for me, and I used to be shy to speak in front of a whole class. But when I took business communication I became more confident and feel like I became a much better confident person and I am never shy to present in front of a class.
I have to begin starting off saying when I made my schedule for the semester and realized I had to take English 222 Effective Speech course I was very hesitant, public speaking was not something I wasn't too keen on doing I will admit. My degree calls for this course so I course my professor and off I went very skeptical that I would do well, get much from this class or even enjoy any of it. Boy was I wrong, not only did I enjoy every aspect of the class, I learned quite about public speaking, persuasive speech, Monroe's Motivated Sequence, the communication model and how we use it, the importance of listening, working in a group as well as group thinking, how conflict is not always verbal. People tend to use passive
I dressed for the speech and illustrated the public about my speech. The relation to my attire and speech should have been clear with no explanation. I supported my topic with a background story and with a quote. This helped emphasize my belief. I wish I had a bit of time to memorize my outline and speech completely. Reading from cards helped but was inappropriate to read directly from them. The way I prepared for my speech included the repetition of my speech while timing myself. I tried to practice my speech in front of a mirror in order to look at myself while
I definitely think that this course has improved my public speaking and professional presentation skills. During my first presentation I rarely made eye contact with the audience and would either
After revision and revision I perfected my think aloud lesson plan and was very confident going into this lesson and was very pleased with the outcome! I feel as though the students learned from my lesson in many ways. I know they learned from this lesson because they were using sentences with the new words they learned about. They also were telling other friends who did not get to participate in the activity about frogs and the facts they learned! It was awesome!
The second speech that was assigned was an individual, informational speech. I was very excited for this speech because I enjoy talking about topics that are more on an objective scale rather than a subjective or personal scale. This type of preference might suggest why I was less nervous giving the informational speech compared to how I felt giving my object speech. The topic for the informational speech was based off of a research article studying the effects of a green tea compound, called epigallocatechin-3-gallate, on prostate cancer cells.
The first speech was the Most Embarrassing Moment speech. I honestly was still so nervous to record this even though I would just be looking at my computer screen. It felt kind of weird, almost as if I was video chatting with myself. After I memorized my speech and sent in my recording, I immediately assumed that I failed because the professor would think that I was too close to the screen or I was too loud or I moved my head around a lot. Then I ended up getting an A on it. Everything I thought that I did wrong was either irrelevant or did not distract from my presentation as a whole. Since I only missed one point, I can say that what I did well was all the
