Stained glass artists are talented and knowledgeable craftspeople who specialize in bringing all types of designs to life. To produce art that is sturdy and aesthetically pleasing, artists employ a number of tools and techniques of the trade. Here is a brief (and simplified) summary of the process stained glass artists use to create the colorful designs seen in churches, government buildings, and private residences.
Creating a Template
Before an artist brings a work to life using small and large pieces of colored glass, he or she first produces a detailed drawing of the complete image. This drawing will need to be the same size as the window opening or other area where the art will be displayed. Pieces of glass will need to be joined with

The artist might polish the edges using a special type of sandpaper or an electric grinder. A brush is then used to remove any particles from the edges.
Inspecting the Cut and Sanded Pieces
This may be thought of as the quality control step of the process. The artist will inspect each and every piece to ensure it is the same size as indicated in the template and the right color.
Joining the Individual Pieces Together to Recreate the Template
This is the point at which the design is truly brought to life. All of the individual pieces are joined using copper foil or lead came to produce the final work of art.
Installing the Art
Finally, the work is installed in a window opening, ceiling area, or other location. The artist is not necessarily involved in this part of the process. Depending on the size and weight of the work, extra supports may need to be added to the opening.
Obviously, creating stained glass art is a complex and labor-intensive process. For the people who love the warm glow and classic beauty of stained glass art, however, the final result is well worth the effort and
Fine Artists create original artwork using a variety of media combined with their own techniques.
The motivation and history of art is partly due to religion. Religions have been passed down and interpreted to this day, and a way to recollect these stories is through art. Also the creations of churches, mosques, etc are works of art in themselves. Buildings were comprised of pillars and ribbed structures, are considered a technological beauty because they were designed to be visually appealing, but had a functional purpose.
Florence is home to many wonderful painters and artists during the renaissance. The one who did the ceiling of the cathedral that is shown is Giorgio Vasari. he was a renaissance painter, architect, and author. This artifact shows how extravagant they had gotten with their art, using perspective, shading and the influences of humanism to paint. This shows the true art of this time period.
heavy stroke which pushes some of the paint and gathers it to create a textured stroke.
Because of their importance, cathedrals were run by bishops, and not local parish priests. Cathedrals were filled with art, because many people were illiterate. Art told stories of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. Stained glass, made by glaziers, filled windows. Often, they were arranged in a pattern that told a story.
Each of the clerestory stained glass windows would be considered representational art because they each depict two great persons from the Bible. The windows on the South side of the building depict a major story from the Old Testament of the Bible. While the windows on the North side of the building depict major stories of the Old Testament. The large stained glass window above the high altar was made to depict God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The palette used for this window was heavy in blue, red, and gold.
This young outsider is quickly gain a following with his imaginative and beautiful sculptures. Ben Young was raised in Waihi Beach, New Zealand; however, he currently resides in Sydney, Australia. Young has created his glass artistry for the past ten years. Some attribute his craft to growing up on the beaches of New Zealand. Hand crafted from glass each of Young’s sculptures are hand drawn, hand cut and handcrafted, layer on layer to create each of his beautiful sculptures. The texture and color of the glass is different in every piece he makes, ensuring one-off and truly unique pieces of artwork. In this piece of art you can make out chiaroscuro in the depth of the water against the rocks. An implied line is formed between the water and ocean
Media: Johannes Vermeer used oil paint on canvas, and he executed the painting by using shades of grey or browns. After those steps he would apply transparent glazes in more saturated colors such as blues, yellows, reds.
Steve Smulka paints glass—but it might be more accurate to say that Smulka paints light. Smulka uses mason jars, vintage seltzer bottles, wine decanters, vases and water pitchers to capture the way light bends, refracts, illuminates, and distorts its surroundings. In some of the paintings, backgrounds of looming clouds and ridged tree bark are as in-focus as the glass containers in the foreground, merging the two in a poetic, scrupulously accurate, yet slightly unreal manner. In other paintings, bottles in columns two, three, or four deep create multiple layers of transparency that make for almost abstract studies of light and color. In Steve Smulka’s closely observed, meditative paintings, these densely luminous layers give weight to the
I think the method that was used to create this sculpture was assembling. I think this sculpture is a construction because it is made up of pieces of metal that seem to be welded together. It seems like the artist also took large pieces of metal and was able to bend and weld them to his liking in order to create the exterior of the sculpture. Then he must have took his time to carefully bend and weld the together various pieces of metal to make the different tools that are on the interior of the sculpture.
Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel using a fresco technique(Tate). Fresco painting is done by brushing water based paint directly onto freshly laid plaster so that the paint becomes one with the plaster. With the paint and plaster becoming one the imaged painted with last longer and is easier to keep intact unless treated right from the start. Two coats of plaster are applied to the surface and allowed to dry, then you put a fresh coat of plaster before you start to paint with a water based
Stained glass has played a major role in reflecting Christianity’s beliefs because of the multitude of uses it has in a church. Stained glass windows are used in Christianity to represent and provide a visual picture for the Bible and the lives of Saints. The windows also serve the church by letting light from outside in. According to members of the Gothic church, when the light enters through the stained glass it becomes divine light and is the light of God. The divine light in the church symbolized the spirit of God. Because stories were depicted
Art is the conscious creation of something beautiful or meaningful using skill and imagination, it is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power:
This unit has been quite enjoyable for me as I have strengthened my art skills and knowledge. To create my ATC’s I have used my media explorations, experiments, and drafts which were done in my process journal. I have used my media explorations for each of the elements of art and principles of design to create my final ATC’s. I have applied the methods and media that I have explored and experimented with to use creative ways to display elements of art and principles of design in my final example. For texture, in my media explorations, I have tried using scissors engraving on my paper to create real texture. This has given me the idea and inspired me to use a needle and poke holes along the lines of the leaf to show real texture, this can be seen in my final ATC with the leaf. I have also used my media exploration and experiments to show lines in one of my final ATC. During my media exploration on the element of line, I have tried using markers to make bold and thick lines. This inspired me to use a marker to create lines in my final ATC, therefore I have chosen to use a marker to create lines in one of my final ATC to show clearer lines. I have also used my 12 drafts (2 drafts for each ATC) to help create the final artwork piece. All the drafts have helped me creating the final artwork as I could see which draft can show the elements of art and principles of design in a clear way.
In these ready-mades there was no artistic intervention such as colour. The ready-mades just existed by themselves. These objects chosen by the artist– not made by the artist own hand – were the result of an intellectual process and thus art. A process that involved minimal amount of interaction between the artist and art and provoke the spectator to participate and
