Many people don’t know, or understand what Autism truly is. Autism is defined as, according to (What is Autism?) “Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. We now know that there is not one autism but many types, caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences.”
Many researchers have agreed that children are not born with Autism. Autism’s most-obvious signs according to, (Autism Spectrum Overview) “ Tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age. Seizures are also highly common as a symptom.
Seizures are found 1 in 4 children with autism, usually in those who have low IQ or are mute. Some Stereotyped symptoms of autism are hand flipping, finger flicking, coin spinning, lining up objects, and other repeated actions. The reason these are considered stereotyped is because you can find them in many different diseases or disorders. (What is Autism?)
Medication is often used to treat behavioral problems such as, aggression, self-injurious behavior, and severe tantrums, that keep the person with an autism disorder from functioning more effectively at home, or school. The most common medication used is Fluoxetine (Prozac), this medicine is so commonly used because it has been approved for children 7 and under. Haloperidol (Haldol), found most effective in more than one study. Haloperidol can however have adverse side effects, such as sedation, muscle stiffness, and abnormal movements. Seizures are usually treated with one of the following, Carbamazepine, Lamotrigine, Topiramate, and valproic acid. The level of medication in blood should be monitored, the least amount possible is used to be effective. Left untreated, many autistic children will not develop effective social skills and may not learn to talk or behave appropriately.
