From my research, the sugar babies personal stories reflected on how the relationship originated using the website SeekingArrangement.com, a site devoted to the development of sugar baby and sugar daddy arrangements. Seeking Arrangement plays an integral role in the perception of the sugar baby because of their significant media presence. They often write articles where they specifically define the differences between the sugaring relationships and use tactics to get young, impressionable girls who are in a financial need the benefits of the sugaring lifestyle and the ability to support herself. SeekingArrangement.com has an annual Sugar Baby Summit to consign with their media presence. The summit normally includes a panel, sugar babies, and …show more content…
When tracing back the origin of sugar it’s hard to have an exact start date because sugaring is such a prevalent issue today. But, two terms that reference some of the ideas of sugaring are the terms, meal ticket and gold digger. The term gold digger, was first noted in 1911 in The Ne’er-Do-Well by Rex Beach. On page 48, the word “gold digger” was first used to describe a person obsessed with money. Beach writes, “These people are money mad, aren’t they? Worst bunch of gold-diggers I ever saw.” However, the terminology “gold digger,” reached a global status with Kayne West’s top hit song, “Gold Digger.” In the song, Kayne sings, “Now I ain't sayin she a gold digger / But she ain't messing with no broke nig**.” The term ‘gold digger’ has been used for sugar babies and women, who are looking for a beneficial relationship. Like a gold digger, a sugar baby isn’t looking for a splenda daddy, a fake sugar daddy, who doesn’t actually have enough money to be a sugar daddy. For the term, “meal ticket,” meaning a person depended on a source of income can only be tracked down to the early 1900s. In the end, there are two important dates when looking at the history of sugaring. Firstly, the establishment of SeekingArrangement.com in 2009 by CEO, Brandon Wade. Secondly, an important person, who could in some cases be referenced as one of the first sugar daddies is, Hugh Hefner. …show more content…
No sugaring experience is the same because their are several different factors and structures in each arrangement. Although, one thing that most sugar babies participate is is having sex with their sugar daddy in order to receive and allowance, and this is where the sugar baby relationship begins to slip into the realms of sex work rather than a relationship. However, for other sugar babies, sex isn't on the table until they form a relationship. Since sugar baby relationships are so unique it’s hard to have one definition of a sugar baby. But, Motyl Jacqueline, successfully categorizes the levels of the sugar baby dynamic to see whether or not they’re engaging in legal activity according to Section 230 of Communications Decency Act. Jacqueline writes, "However, since the 1970s, courts have agreed that sexual acts are not deemed to fall within the realm of prostitution if there is something accompanying the sex, such as companionship, dinner, or even cleaning the house." This is why the sugaring relationship is so hard to define according to the law. SeekingArrangement advertises the sugar baby relationship as only a mentoring companionship between two people, but for some sugar babies the relationship between a sugar daddy and a sugar baby is purely
The colonists would have probably been content under British control for a while longer if it was not for being bombarded with all of the unfair acts and taxes that were imposed on them by the British. The colonists were taxed on just about everything from goods they used in everyday life and even things such as stamps. The Sugar Act was passed in 1764 just after the Proclamation of 1763, this is when Britain really showed of that they were in fact a dictatorship. The Sugar Act was to raise money by taxing sugar in America so Britain could continue to protect, defend, and secure North America. This was passed because molasses was cheaper from other countries such as India, so to make Britain's price competitive they would tax everything imported from foreign places. The act also disregarded Britain's innocent until proven guilty motto because if you were caught smuggling goods you were assumed guilty instead (Boyer et. al, 132). Britain also tried to ease its national debt by passing the

“The Toxic Truth About Sugar”, written by Lustig et al. varies in their usage of rhetorical strategies to try to have their readers better understand that sugar, as common as it is, can be very dangerous when a big amount is consumed in one day. The numbers in our world don’t lie: A shocking statistic is that there are currently thirty percent more people who are obese than there are healthy. This discussion arose from the staggering facts that obesity is becoming more of an epidemic than ever before. The United States has a choice to make: Take the steps necessary to slow obesity or do nothing at all, like it feels we are currently doing. This can be a good or bad rush, depending on how you assess the situation.
The rise of sugar as a commodity in England situated England as the world’s leading consumer. The increasing popularity of coffeehouses among middle-class English people, as well the introduction of tea from China, fueled the counties. England’s growing interest in coffee and tea greatly increased the demand for sugar leading to a significant effect on Africa and its people. The high English demand for sugar required land to expand sugar plantations, and an efficient source of labor to produce, creating a connection between all three. For example, if there was not enough demand, there would have been no point in planting sugar and if cheap labor could not be obtained, it would not be worth doing so on such a large scale because it would have been expensive and unprofitable. Since they had all these contributing factors in their favor the British were able to gain profit from sugar plantations, which worked as a significant contributor towards their economy. To meet the land requirements the British picked their Caribbean colonies because of their control of that region and its climate. After finding the land for plantations, England had to find the source of labor to work these plantations. The English turned into Africa for cheap slave labor. The British had tried the local Caribbeans to work on the plantations but these people were already affected by the diseases that were brought to the area by Europeans. As a result, there were not many Caribbean people to work the
It is common that arrangement websites connecting sugar babies to sugar daddies and mamas are vague, allowing for potential harm towards its users. As claimed on SeekingArrangement.com, “everything is on your own terms: (). The site connects users together but does not take responsibility for any consequential action beyond signing up. Users are free to negotiate the prices and activites on their own terms. However, since there are more female sugar babies than male sugar daddies, the latter party tends to wield more power in the negotiation process. It is usually the tendency for sugar babies to begin negotiations with a strong sense of choice and moral code, but then waver as negotiations continue and the need for income becomes more imminent (). The site claims that arrangement resulting in sex are “a bonus”, implying that sexual activities are negotiable and not necessary (). However, in practicality, this statement bears no merit because it is generally understood by all parties that any and all conversation, negotiation and interaction will be of sexual nature or advance in sexual nature. Despite the fact that the site claims to filter out individuals who are using it for the sole purpose of sex, there are no regulations in place that ensures the safety of these young adults. Although SeekingArrangement.com encourages users to report sexual offenders, the most drastic of actions taken is the mere deactivation of accounts.
In the film “Bad Sugar” the diabetes epidemic in the O’odham community is used to illustrate the relationships between several social determinants of health, such as oppression and hopelessness, and the high percentage of American Indians affected with diabetes. However, there also more diseases that have a connection with social determinants of health. Domestic violence is a big issue in the American Indian community and it also has ties with social determinants of health. Not only does domestic violence share similar social determinants of health with the diabetes epidemic, but it also has a connection with family environment and social norms, illustrating that there is a need for education and assistance with the issue.
The highly anticipated television series Queen Sugar is set to air on September 6th and 7th.
One of the “finer things in life”(par. 4) in which sugar daddies are now increasingly providing for their sugar babies is a college education, or, at the very least, the money needed to acquire one. In an article titled “How Sugar Daddies Are Financing College Education”, Caroline Kitchener of the Atlantic writes of a prostitution website created uniquely for sugar babies and sugar daddies. The website is called Seeking Arrangement. On Seeking Arrangement sugar babies are connected to and can view both the profiles and incomes of various sugar daddies (Kitchener, par. 4). In fact, the website is set up and is promoted basically like any other run-of-the-mill dating/partner seeking site (par. 5), even though money is often times traded for intercourse (par. 5). In designing
The documentary “Fed Up” provides some important and disturbing details of the food industry. The 1977 heart disease and diet study known as the McGovern Report warned that the obesity rate was increasing rapidly due to American diets in fatty meats, saturated fats, cholesterol, and sugar. The food industry vehemently denied these claims, but the American people still demanded lower fat food products. The food manufacturers found that the fat removal made the food bland and unpalatable so to address this they replaced the fat content with sugar. Both the documentary and the Harvard Nutrition Source discuss the role sugar has in health conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. They both link the consumption of sugar as the causality for
Sugar was relatively unknown to Europe until the fourteenth century. After its introduction to the people of Europe, it gradually spread across the continent until it eventually reached the Atlantic nations. After the “discovery” of the New World, Europe was eager to expand its territories. Sugar was soon brought to the Americas with the explorers, and the global sugar trade was born. The sugar trade was driven by the high demand for sugar in Europe, its appeal to European investors, and competition between European nations.
Sugar was irresistible and that is why it was one of the biggest global trade items. There were pro’s and con’s to the sugar trade. Europeans got wealthy and powerful while slaves were worked to death.
The play No Sugar by Jack Davis has various themes and issues covered in it. My understanding of society helps with the meaning of this text, through multiple aspects. These aspects are shown in the text through various themes/issues. These themes portray society and help with my understanding of No Sugar. The themes/issues are as follows; colonialism, economic depression and the patriarchy society. All these topics were a big part of Davis time, and when he wrote the play. This is the reason that we can see these issues portrayed through his play. Racism is a big part of his play and in the era when the play was written as well, and it’s shown not as a separate issue but is portrayed

When most people think about sugar, their first thoughts are not: heart disease, addiction, or slow and painful death; yet, unfortunately, these conditions are very real consequences of the unregulated and excessive consumption of sugar. In Nature’s article, “The Toxic Truth About Sugar” (2012), Robert Lustig, pediatric endocrinologist; Laura Schmidt, Professor of Health Policy at UCSF; and Claire Brindis, Professor of Pediatrics and Health Policy at UCSF, evaluate the world’s ever-increasing and toxic struggle with the substance sugar – also discussing counter measures to promote healthier diets amongst American’s and other societies. Lustig and his colleagues develop their argument using statistical evidence as they address the global impact of sugar, refuting minor oppositions, before dissecting each harmful aspect of the substance – even comparing it to substances more known for their toxicity. Eventually, presenting readers with possible routes of regulation, the authors firmly suggest government intervention in the production and sale of sugary foods. Although the argument is well executed, I remain unconvinced that government intervention is actually necessary.
The term “sugar daddy” arose in about 1915-1920, as a term of endearment. It was slang for a man who offered money or gifts to a young woman for their companionship – can range from explicit sexual contracts to casual dates to even being a married daddy’s second partner. Men can also be sugar babies, but it is not as common. Sugaring is a type of relationship in which a sugar baby "provides companionship in exchange for being pampered," while a Sugar Daddy, which is usually an older man with money "pampers Sugar Babies in return for companionship." "Pampering" is a very broad term and can include negotiated financial compensation; ranging from an allowance to a possible investment into a Sugar Baby's business venture — or it could be gifts, trips, dinners and high end clothing.
