Bullying is defined as using a form of power for the purpose of intimidation. Bullying is something that occurs in everyone’s life. Bullying can also be physical or verbal. Bullying is very prominent in adolescence. The effects bullying have on children and adolescents can sometimes end tragically if no one is able to intercede. In the article entitled, “A Developmental Perspective on Bullying”, the authors, Debra J. Pepler, Wendy M. Craig, Jennifer A. Connolly, Amy Yuile, Loren McMaster and Depeng Jiang, examine bullying in adolescence and its forms and contexts (2006). This topic can include gender comparisons, situations that are bully prone such as school transitions, and many of other aspects. The objectives, methods, and results will …show more content…
The elementary school sample included 504 boys and 457 girls and the high school sample was composed of 456 boys and 479 girls. Majority of the students were of a Euro-Canadian background but ethnicities are not available through the information for the elementary sample group. In regards to the high school sample group, ethnic backgrounds include Euro-Canadian, African-Canadian, and Asian Canadian. The students in the elementary school sample ages range from 9-14 years of age. The age range for the high school same was 13-18 years of age. Most of the adolescents came from two parent households while others were not. The Safe School Questionnaire was shortened and given. When examining the topic of bullying, only two items were used to assess the involvement of bullying and the sum of the two items were used to measure bullying behavior. To measure sexual harassment, a modified version of the AAUW Sexual Harassment Survey was given. The modifications allowed to students to report sexual harassment involving peers and not the staff, that occurred in the past two months and not their entire life, and the response rating scale was expanded to five points. To examine dating aggression, …show more content…
Opposite-sex sexual harassment was associated with pubertal development for girls in grades 6-8, while for boys, it was significant in grade 7. The association between dating aggression and pubertal development was for found only in boys grade 7. For girls, aggression was insignificant with social norms. Bullying was found more at the high school level than the elementary level. Reports of bullying was highest around school transition. As for sexual harassment between same- and opposite-sex peers increased over the early adolescent years and leveled off in the later high-school years. No difference was found in the topic of direct of physical aggression with a dating partner. Bullying is a situation where one person abuses power over another. Bullying is about power, control and abuse. Bully’s come in all shapes, sizes and forms. Bullying occurs throughout a human’s life span. The most-critical development stage of one’s personality is adolescence. Bullying during adolescence has been a major issue in every community. Bullying can happen in three known forms; direct, indirect, and cyber. Both gender and sexual orientation are associated with all forms of bullying. Bullying affects self-esteem and family cohesion.
The purpose of this study is to identify the most prevalent forms of bullying on a high school campus and identify which strategies are most effective to prevent or respond to bullying. The study will also identify the most effective strategies to improve student achievement and attendance for those students who have experienced bullying. Students must feel safe to learn. Students who are bullied have a propensity to avoid the bullies; therefore, they choose not to attend school. Poor attendance often will result in poor grades and even dropping out of school.
Bullying has been a problem for a very long time; however in these present times bullying is becoming an epidemic. Maybe the reason behind this is the new occurrence of social media in our society, and the new strategies used by bullies to harass there victims. In this report the topics that will be covered are why bullying is an issue to study in human development, describe three components or types of behavior in bullying that are observed by researchers. Explain how gender and sexual orientation that influence the styles of bullying, how bullying affects self-esteem and what affect does the family system have on bullying.
The Bullying Policy has been introduced around the world which, according to the 2014 observations , rates of bullying vary across studies from 9% to 98%. An observation of 80 studies analyzing bullying involvement rates for both bullying others and being bullied for 12-18 year old students reported an estimate rate of 35% for traditional bullying involvement and 15% for cyberbullying involvement (Modecki, Minchin, Harbaugh, Guerra, & Runions, 2014). This means the Bullying Prevention Policy affects million of students nationwide due to the programs created. More specifically, females face a higher indication of bullying victimization than males do. To explain, high percentages of each gender are faced with the aggressive acts of violence, making it extremely hard to perform well in the school environment. Furthermore, as many as 93 percent of students hear derogatory words about sexual orientation at least once every day at school or in their community (violencepreventionworks). Negative name calling and harassment about sexual orientation can be disrespectful to all students. For an example, 3 out of 4 students who are bullied/harassed with such remarks are not identified as lesbian, gay,
There are various types of bullying that students are face with such as; physical bullying, this type of bullying involves hitting, shoving, pushing, tripping and any other kind of force. Verbal bullying involves the use of hurtful comments such as, name-calling and teasing. Social bullying involves using relationship to hurt someone, it involves excluding or ostracizing someone from a friend group, spreading rumors or the silent treatment. Cyber bullying happens over cell phone and the internet. School bullying is not subject to any particular gender both boys and girls are guilt of or victims of some form of bullying. However; bullying is likely to be missed by teachers, Johnson.pg 129 states “while teachers view bullying as a major problem, it is low on the list reported by students.” This quote explain that it is almost impossible to know whether a child is being bullied or the type of bullying that they experience. Therefore, in this essay I will claim that violence has increased in school as a result of bullying, and because of bullying student bringing weapons to school as a means of
Many kids all around the world are abused by their parents, peers or even by complete strangers. One of these types of abuse is bullying. At a first glance, we might think that it is an older kid beating/teasing a younger classmate however; bullying consists of much more than this. The basic definition of bullying is when your behavior hurts or harms another person physically or emotionally. There are many different types of bullying, which may lead to a victim becoming violent later on. There is teasing and name calling, there is also picking and shoving the kid. However, the most extreme one would be beating up the child, hurting them physically and mainly, emotionally.
Experiences of bullying victimization can be categorized into direct and indirect victimization and differ between boys and girls (Arseneault et al., 2010; Van der Wal et al., 2003). Many cohort studies have shown that 20-30% of school aged children fall victim to frequent bullying. While studies have shown that both boys and girls are victimized, girls tend to internalize the trauma of their experiences. There are several types of bullying; verbal, physical, relational, and cyber (Wang et al., 2009). Victimization is a leading cause of depression among both boys and girls. Over a two to three year period, using children ranging from ages 13-19, a broad range of ethnic backgrounds, gender, grade, age, and household composition are the
The aim of the study in the article, “Adolescent Bullying, Dating, and Mating” by Volk, Dane, Marini, and Vaillancourt, was to try to pinpoint why so many adolescence bully others, in order to stop the dilemma for good. The researchers hope that if they can just figure out why bullying happens, they can use the knowledge to work towards the goal eliminating all bullying in adolescence. The hypothesis that the researchers tested was the hypothesis that bullying is positively correlated with dating and mating. Also, the researchers wanted to see if bullying was associated with a high social status and more power. The results they concluded from their experiments are not only important to the general public, but are also important to me personally.
Many researches on bullying have found a strong connection between bullying behavior and the gender differences (Hathorn & Harris, 2006).Furthermore it has been evaluated to find out the difference between diverse types of violence in bullying between girls and boys in various grades. For example, several researches have debated that physical bullying is more prevalent in
Bullying can be hard to define, because research has shown that it comes in many forms which makes it difficult to find one set of characteristics that will describe a bully. Conclusively, studies have defined bullying as a set of repeated aggressive behavior that is intended to harm someone, which usually involves an imbalance of power between the victim and the perpetrator (Morgan, 2012, p. 174). Studies have shown that there are two distinct types of bullying, which is a direct form of verbal and physical aggression, and indirect, which often results in name calling, rumors and exclusion (Aluedse, 2006, p. 38). This form of peer victimization can have devastating effects on a child 's academic work and their physical and psychological well being (Limber, 2003, p. 23). In terms of gender, boys are more likely to be involved in physical bullying (direct) as for girls are more likely to be involved in indirect bullying (Wang et al, 2009, p. 371). Previous research indicates, that parents and friends are two important factors of social interaction associated with bullying and victimization among adolescences. Bullying is quite common among middle school children, because it is during this time that children go through puberty and hormonal changes. During this time students are looking to be accepted and fit into a specific group; however, when there is a lack of acceptance and esteem due to victimization, this can cause children to isolate themselves from those around them
Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.
School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the gained understanding of the effects.
It is only in the recent years that attention has turned toward the widespread problem of bullying, especially in schools, and that bullying is identified as a serious problem that merits intervention and research (Coy). Therefore, relatively little effort has been made to overcome or address the problem, which still remains a widespread social vice. This paper purports to illustrate how, despite efforts made to rectify the situation, bullying still remains rampant, and is getting worse.
“Bullying is one form of violence that seems to have increased in recent years,
