Schools are trying to counter bullying in multiple ways so children can feel safe both at and away from school. Many people believe that by removing differences between students particularly in middle school and high school, opportunities for bullying will be diminished. One solution is school uniforms, which are thought to help maintain equality among students. However, uniforms do not significantly help in reducing differences between students and only serve to restrict students’ freedom of expression and cost large sums of money which can create difficulties for low-income families.
School uniforms limit children’s opportunity to be themselves and express their individuality. Those who are for uniforms might argue they make getting dressed

School uniforms can cost hundreds of dollars for an outfit with one shirt ranging from 28 to 50 dollars (Source D). Poorer families or families with multiple children cannot always afford this large burden. Some may argue it's cheaper to buy one or two uniforms than regular clothes for a year however parents would still have to supply their children with clothes to wear outside of school and during vacation time. Therefore, uniforms are an extra expense on top of what parents already pay (Source C). Also, low-income families would not be able to afford as many sets of uniforms and thus those children would wear worn down clothes and the economic gap that is present in schools without uniforms would reappear in no time. One solution to the problems caused by uniforms would be to replace them with a dress code. In an increase in recent years has led 88% of schools to have some form of dress code compared to the 10% with school uniforms (Source E). Dress codes allow schools to control what their students wear while still making it reasonably affordable. Dress code acceptable clothes are often similar to everyday attire and thus are not purchased on top of regular clothes compared to school uniforms which are unique to the school environment, therefore, making it easier on
Bullying is a problem that affects every student in America and recently this problem has increased among American students. According to the National Education Association (2016), an "estimated 160,000 students missed school every day due to a fear of violence and harassment from their peers." Students at many schools, including my own, have become more divided. This division has resulted in bullying especially towards students that stand out from the crowd with the way they look and dress. Along with continuing the anti-bullying programs already in place, public schools should implement a school uniform in order to reduce divisions among students, which should, in turn, reduce bullying and violence among students.
Now a days, school-age kids feel the pressure to fit in with their friends and be successful in school. Many schools are considering the use of uniforms to avoid certain problems with student’s behavior like school violence, etc. School uniforms should be used because they are economic, they promote social equality and the school staff has more control of the dress code.
Uniforms affect students mentally. Uniforms decrease bullying which can help students feel more inclined to go to school. Bullying is a big problem in many schools. Students can find any and every difference in another person, uniforms would eliminate many of these. Uniforms allow students to not be bullied for the things they are wearing. 64% of school leaders said uniforms reduce bullying and 86% of school leaders said uniforms make "a significant, positive impact on peer pressure," from a survey by uniform manufacturer, Land’s End, the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) in 2013 (School Uniforms-Procon). Many of these bullies do not only use words but also violence. “The results in column (2) suggest that girls… in middle and high school girls are 1.2 percentage points less likely to leave” (Gentile and Iberman 21). This could be due to less bullying going on in these schools. Many children, especially girls do not want to attend school if there is someone who is bullying them. This can lead
Students from schools with a uniform policy say that uniforms have affected the way they feel about themselves in an unsatisfactory way. Uniforms are proven to slow down the transition into becoming an adult because students aren’t used to choosing their own clothing. Wearing a uniform opens an opportunity for students to judge each other’s bodies based on how they look and it creates room for drama and bullying. The uniforms can also obstruct a student from expressing themselves. Schools should not require a school uniform policy because they delay the transition into adulthood, they cause students to compare their bodies and bullying each other, and uniforms restrict a student’s self-expression and personality.
School uniforms help schools, academic reputation and help families. Cost is one of the major factors in this process. Behavior is proven to be affected positively with uniforms. One recommendation, I would make is letting schools try uniforms. See if it really helps improve students in the school district and if it doesn't implement it into the school rules. Nothing bad can come from trying to see if something helps school, perform
As stated in the Morning Call on January 11, 2013, “Uniforms will reduce bullying, teasing and disruption while also being a cheaper alternative for poor parents who struggle every year to afford new school clothes for their children”(Esack). Much like the Allentown Area School District, incorporating uniforms needs to be a priority for Pen Argyl High School. Not only will students have better attendance once uniforms are required, but one can also expect school achievement to increase. The enacting of a uniform rule by the Pen Argyl School District geared towards the high school would halt bullying in our school, eliminate questionable dress code violations, and make all students and personnel easily identifiable when present in the high

Many school administrators and parents believe that uniforms create a better learning environment at school. First and foremost, many administrators claim that students are not as distracted by how they look, and therefore, spend more time learning at school. This allows students to focus more upon their schoolwork, rather than social appearances.” (PAR 3) A parent want to feel at ease knowing that their children is in a safe and secure learning environment when their children are at school. However, being able to provide a safe learning environment will not have the same effect on all students. Some students will still act as if the school uniform never
The main problem that school uniforms bring upon schools, is the restriction of a student’s self expression. Without self expression being available for the youth, many problems can stir up. Lack of self expression can lead to long term effects such as a delay transition into adulthood. Adults make their own clothing choices and have the freedom to express themselves through their appearance. So without this freedom, kids have no choice but to wear outfits required by the school. Denying children and teenagers the opportunity to make those choices may make them ill-prepared for the adult world. Self expression is vital for a kid’s mind, it helps one figure out who they really are and also gives them a voice to inform the public about their opinions, personalities, and
Growing up, I attended a Catholic elementary school, middle school, and high school. I found it easier to attend and focus on school when wearing the same clothes as everyone else. Today, tiny southern towns even to the nation's largest cities, public school uniforms have become so common this year that in many areas, they are no longer the exception, but the rule (Lewin “Dress for Success: Public School Uniforms”). Imagine a parent’s comfort in knowing their child was being treated as an equal at school each and every day. No judgment or hassle on picking out an outfit to impress anyone. With the implementation of school uniforms, the most comfort for us, students, is possible. There is a vast amount of controversy on the way school
Some critics say that school uniforms increase the amount of clothing that parents have to buy for their children, meaning that they would have to spend more money. Students wouldn’t wear their uniforms outside of school, so parents would have to buy casual clothing for their child to wear outside of school.
The next advantage of public school uniforms can be identified as the reduction of bullying behaviors. Everyone benefits by adopting the uniform policy. It helps students to unite and share a same goal – learning. Also, by adopting the
Pants below waist, baggy shirts with sexist signs, and piercings, this is not a good view early in the morning. That’s why the school should implement a uniform policy. Uniforms should be mandatory in school. Uniforms make the school appear more professional. Also with uniforms students won’t compare themselves with each other. Moreover uniforms can help students save time. Additionally parents won’t have to waste so much money on clothes hence will have a better budget.
School Uniforms are being pushed more and more in schools, but what is commonly thought of when the words “school uniform” is said? For most people the picture of children in the same colored uniforms gathered in front of a Catholic Church or a private school is displayed in their mind. This picture is one of the many problems with school uniforms. Instead of being seen as an individual, students are seen as just another kid in a uniform attending a fancy private school. The students cannot develop the self-expression that is crucial to their development at this age. Uniforms are thought to create a more protected campus and learning environment, however, if someone wants to bully someone else, clothes are not going to stop them. The cost, which is usually seen as a pro, can actually be more than people anticipate. As one can see, in the best interest of any student, school uniforms should not be made part of the dress code.
Every year parents spend tons of money to treat their child with new cloths to use and wear during the school year. Uniforms can prevent that financial crises from occuring. “…77 percent of respondents estimated the average cost of school uniforms per child, per year, was $150 or less… In 2016 that number has gone up. Back-to-school clothing purchases are expected to be more than $235 per child. New shoes add about $130 to the tab” (Parade). Some people may argue that school uniforms wastes money and costs to much. Studies show that buying 2-3 uniforms for the school year actually saves money than buying regular clothes over the school year. Another article states, “A national survey of 517 US school leaders found that 94% of those surveyed believe ‘one of the main benefits to parents is that school uniforms are more cost-effective than regular apparel…’“ (Procon.org). School uniforms are worth their price. Parents around the U.S are stating that purchasing 2-3 uniforms are too costly and can save more money buying clothes throughout the year. This is not true, because many Parents save money over the course of a year by their school switching to uniforms. Uniforms are extremely useful because Parents can save money by buying uniforms instead of clothes of the course of the
