This particular case gives phenomenal examples of TQM, a term that is synonymous with continuous quality improvement (CQI), in a health services organization. This began the brainstorming process of defining more competitive and redesigning the capabilities of CQI to drive that process (McLaughlin, Johnson & Sollecito, 2012). The competition for patients has been intense with Baptist Hospital, and Sacred Heart Hospital all in the general Pensacola area. The majority of the patients admitted were state BlueCross Blue Shield, Champus(Tricare) for military dependents and Medicare patients Sacred Heart Hospital. While walking with my colleague, I explain “TQM is about fixing the ‘it’ before it breaks, not after the ‘it’ has broken, whatever that ‘it’ may be. It’s about avoiding errors in the first place. TQM is about working with each other, building commitment to quality and it is going to take a hospital-wide involvement to implement and be successful at. It’s a holistic philosophy where we have to work to pull all the pieces together to increase patient satisfaction and quality of care and integrate the philosophy into our daily activities. Plus, with healthcare reform initiatives and the major focus being on quality and care, we can’t afford for this not to work. TQM is a continuous process. It’s not going to be easy or quick, but if we can get everyone working together on this, the payoff will be well worth the effort.”
