Various methodologies exist for the integration of quality improvement strategies into performance improvement measures. With concepts of total quality management (TQM) and quality improvement (QI) being introduced to health care organizations; administrators have had to decide which methodology is right for the organization. There are numerous methodologies: Six Sigma, Lean, and Customer Inspired Quality. Each has its own pros and cons. Quality Improvement can be defined as the combined effort of health care professionals including, doctors, nurses, healthcare managers who ensure better patients outcome such as quality care, safety, better system performance and better professional development. Healthcare system always goes through changes, whether its implementation of new systems or diagnosis of new disease. Therefore, health organizations are always in need of some improvement and advancement. In order to achieve improvement, systems have to go through a series of change; however, not all changes can be called an improvement. To ensure the improvement in these systems, some powerful strategies are planned, designed and implemented. These formal strategies analyze the systemic efforts and measure performance in order to improve the entire system and is called quality improvement or QI program.

Healthcare organizations have a responsibility to its consumers and various stakeholders to ensure only the highest quality care is delivered. Quality measures such as performance measurement and quality improvement processes play a critical role in helping organizations achieve quality outcomes. This paper will contrast performance measurement and quality improvement processes. In addition, this paper will discuss a healthcare organization, Gulf Coast Medical Center, its mission and QI goals, and the role of the consumer and stakeholders in the QI process.

Efforts towards Quality Improvement (QI) have been implemented into healthcare systems to address and improve quality issues. It emphasizes on the importance of consistency for meeting patient demands and expectations, as this dictates how valuable the organization appears in the eyes of their stakeholders. The most recent of the methods is Quality Management (QM), in which QI is derived around management activities and functions to achieve high patient satisfaction rates and technical quality for health care organizations. Quality management in healthcare is an overall goal to provide excellent care in all areas. Each healthcare facility is charged the task to show their diligence when it comes to taking care of patients. Quality management role is important because it shows that there are internal processes that will have positive outcomes for the patients. In the healthcare delivery system there will be guiding principles, which is just a step above their standard service expectations. “According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the health care field is full of legal regulations (such as HIPAA, a confidentiality law), so quality management departments are responsible for identifying which statutes apply to their organization, and developing guiding principles for their company to adhere to.” (Gordon, D. K. ,2011).

While walking with my colleague, I explain “TQM is about fixing the ‘it’ before it breaks, not after the ‘it’ has broken, whatever that ‘it’ may be. It’s about avoiding errors in the first place. TQM is about working with each other, building commitment to quality and it is going to take a hospital-wide involvement to implement and be successful at. It’s a holistic philosophy where we have to work to pull all the pieces together to increase patient satisfaction and quality of care and integrate the philosophy into our daily activities. Plus, with healthcare reform initiatives and the major focus being on quality and care, we can’t afford for this not to work. TQM is a continuous process. It’s not going to be easy or quick, but if we can get everyone working together on this, the payoff will be well worth the effort.”

The primary purpose of quality management is to beat the competition. It does this by improving the services, products, and enhance safety to achieve maximum customer satisfaction and better performance. Quality management makes all employees responsible for patient satisfaction. Internally, it creates a sense of communication and effectiveness. Every care service we provide should be based on quality, by defining issues in the organization, find solutions to improve patients’ satisfaction and increase the quality. Healthcare organizations need the quality management to track effectiveness and performance through different measurement tools to collect information about the patient satisfaction and evaluate the outcomes by comparing collected information to the performance expectation.

Quality management in the healthcare field is an aspect that is geared towards ensuring that patients receive excellent provision of care. This process is a function that healthcare facilities are responsible to carry out to demonstrate their due diligence to performing optimal care of their patients. Generally, the use of quality management enables administrators, physicians, and health care business to identify ways of enhancing internal processes that provides more quality for patients' outcomes. In the modern health care industry, several facilities seek for means of receiving an advantage from other organizations in the market. One of the major ways for health care facilities to obtain an advantage over others is to utilize quality improvement that results in better health outcomes for patients. As the leader of a local healthcare facility, Cindy Janowski, has discovered that leading organizations successfully implement quality improvement plans.
