There is limited research that displays relationship between how a teacher dresses and students behavior, but some students and teachers believe it makes a difference. A teacher at Earl Boyles Elementary added some extra fashion to her outfit for the school environment. By doing this, the attitudes of the students and teachers became more energetic throughout the school day, “Not only did the makeover boost her self-confidence, but it may bolster her students attitudes as well” ( Wendy Owen October 13 ). The majority of students behavior comes from how a teacher is dressed, “First impressions of teachers professionalism are based on appearance (55%)” (Owen,2009). By the percentage , that is shown can see that the appearance matters most about themselves in a classroom. From interviews of different students you can see how some students might say how they feel based on how the teacher is dressed on that day. “I feel like when they are dressed more relaxed, I feel more relaxed”, said Megan Arnoldy, (Wendy Owen October 13).
Markovchick is a teacher who has studied the question, “Does teacher dress influence students attitudes?”. Markovchick would interview students particularly ninth graders by showing them female teachers in different ways and she would make the students rate each teacher's ability in a number of different categories. It seems as though teachers that dressed more casually would receive little credibility. The more formal the teacher looked the more
The prominent reason behind the various overdone school rules regarding dress is the loose power that administrators have been given. They have been “reserve[d] the right to determine if a clothing item or accessory is appropriate for school” (Carroll High School Student Handbook 2010-2011 18). The officials at school are using their own personal opinions to judge the students’ dress. Since styles change as time goes on, the generation in control and the
School uniforms keep students focused on their education, not their clothes. A bulletin published by the National Association of Secondary School
School dress code has been an issue in public schools for a number of years. Many schools around our country are starting school dress codes to deal with many different issues in our schools. When trying to find research on the topic of school dress codes impact on student achievement, it was very limited. The research that we will be looking at will discuss the history of school dress codes and legal issues that arose from it. We will also look at other studies that discuss the main reasons for implementing a school dress code. We will discuss the steps, based on others findings, of researching the impact of dress code on student learning. The end of this paper will discuss how to install a dress code at your school successfully.
Michael, a 12-year-old student at South Bronx Prep says, “ school uniforms are not meant for us if its not meant for the teachers”. He thinks it is unfair that we have to wear uniforms when teachers don’t (Hightower). Teachers are allowed to wear what they want and would refuse to wear uniform because they don’t want their rights violated. And this is how students feel. However the first lesson a potential teacher learns in collage is to first model for the
Does ones attire have such significant effect that teachers need be be enforced a dress code? In the classroom, a teacher’s attire can greatly impact the school’s climate for a student. A teacher who practices a professional attire is more likely to establish a higher level of respect from students, behave more avidly and perform their job in a more exemplary manner. However, with the fading teacher dress code and schools enforcing a looser policy for attire expectations, teachers are increasingly opting for casual attire they can also be seen wearing on their days off. Along with many public schools with a loose policy, Shawnee Heights High School Principal Ed West explains the dress code as simply just a district wide expectation of business casual with the exception of Fridays, extracurricular activities and a teacher’s position (West). Teachers within schools obtaining a loose dress code struggle with distinguishing between teachers and students casual attire leading to a problem with teachers obtaining authority over their students.
In the past, women would not wear anything else other than dresses, hose, skirts, and high heels. Men, on the other hand, were expected to wear suits and ties to complement their looks. There was no room for pants and jeans for anyone. The dress code for women also applied to the female students except for the shoes. Onwards, the boys wouldn’t be allowed in school with outlandish haircuts, Mohawks or unshaved faces. This trend persisted until the early 1970s when it as replaced with simple dress codes characterized by outfits that make both students and teachers look dressier. In essence, today’s mode of dressing allows educators and students the freedom to wear whatever they deem fit so long as it presents them clearly and simply.
Did you know that your child’s uniform is affecting their personality? This is something that not everyone really thinks about. We think about the benefits of this but we never really stop to think about the downside of uniforms. I am going to share with you some of the downsides that we do not really stop to think about. I do not blame you for not really thinking about it because we think that schools do what is best for the children but that is not always the case. Here’s the most shocking part to everything, school’s uniform requirements are affecting the children’s character.
Teacher in the classroom, their stance, their dressing and attitude has an impact on the students .Students’ nature are imitating their teachers whether it is bad or good. So,teachers should be very careful about their style of dressing, acting and speaking inside the classroom.
In many schools around the United States, multiple females are told that their choice of clothing is inappropriate and distracting to the male students. In some cases, girls admit that being told to change or being sent home sometimes lowers their self esteem, especially when the boys are also breaking dress code but are not getting in trouble for it. Girls are told that a boy’s education is more important than their own. Even though most young men will admit they are not distracted by the clothing girls wear, the excuse, “boys will be boys” is used to disregard their behavior and are not punished for their actions. Young women are being sexuallized for the clothing they wear and are being told they need to cover up for the sake of their safety, instead of teaching young men to control themselves.

According to Rowan University (2007), “The way a student dresses can have an impact on school safety, academic success and create a positive, productive learning environment.” When a student comes to class in uniform they aren’t worrying about what people think about their outfit, their mind is focused on learning, and paying attention in class. According to Walden University (2016), “Uniforms lessen social pressures, help to increase student self-esteem, and improve academic achievement.”
Most schools in America have a school uniform or school dress code. These dress codes usually consist of blue, green, white, red, or black collared shirts and khaki pants or shorts with close toed shoes. As it stands today schools have no true reasoning to force their students to wear uniforms. However, at the high school level most schools don’t have dress code anymore. Well if that is the case then why does McKeel force students to wear uniforms despite other schools actions?
First of all, wearing uniforms for students will help to improve students’ behavior. When students wear the uniform their behaviors improve because all of them are the same, so no one will laugh at others. Laura Clark is a writer from British Daily Mails. According to Clark (2007) in her article “Schools uniform improves pupils’ behavior” she agrees that “if the students wearing uniforms it will changing students’ behavior in the school and out of school and also inside the class students” (Clark, 2007). That means if the students wear traditional school clothes their attitude will improve in school and out of school. Also, parents and teachers see the differences that when students start to wear traditional school clothes
Many studies that were analyzed in the current literature review use quantitative research design and survey as the main instrument for collecting the primary data. For instance, Carr, Davies & Lavin (2009) and Carr, Davies & Lavin, (2010) used survey by involving the university students into research. Both studies are very similar in terms of their objectives as well as the research tools, including the SPSS statistic tool utilized to analyze the responses. However, both studies produced different results. The research conducted in 2009 collected data that proved teacher’s choice in attire can determine a student’s perception of how knowledgeable they are as well as their likeability. Yet,
