A sport team is a special type of group. Teams have four key characteristics beyond mutual interaction and task interdependence. Having an awesome thought, and gathering a group to breathe life into that idea is the initial phase in making an effective team wander. While finding another and one of a kind thought is sufficiently uncommon; the capacity to effectively execute this thought is the thing that isolates the visionaries from the great leaders. 4 characters that I would want on my team are, collective sense of identity, distinctive roles, structured modes of communication, and norms.
Collective identity refers to a person's sense of belonging to a group. The identity of the group, or the 'collective,' becomes a part of the person's

Communication is a vital component of any sporting activity. It envelops two key components: having the capacity to converse with individuals and having the capacity to tune in to individuals. It is basic that a pioneer has the capacity to get his or her point crosswise over to the group or even to every player exclusively. Research also suggests that an athlete’s perception of the coach’s behavior can be a determinant of possible outcomes or results. A coach’s behavior can have indirect impact on athletes’ perceptions, interpretation, and evaluation of those behaviors, which influences the athlete’s self-perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes(). The down fall of not having communication is, the competitor may hop to a conclusion as opposed to working through the way toward hearing, understanding and tolerating. The competitor may do not have the information expected to comprehend what you are endeavoring to convey. The competitor may do not have the inspiration to hear you out or to change over the data given vigorously. The mentor may experience issues in communicating what he or she wishes to state to the
Sports management is a really broad field, therefore I decided to focus on my minor and one of my major interests of this field: coaching. In this paper I will be explaining my personal five building blocks that make up a well-rounded coaching philosophy and coach. Those blocks are; leadership, organization, attitude, respect, and resiliency. Each of these five aspects are equally important and balance each other out. Leadership, the action of leading a group of athletes towards a goal. Organization, being able to organize a team and have a plan in order to help the team achieve goals. Attitude, it is very important for a coach to have a winning and positive attitude that is contagious to the players. Respect, there has to be a good
Sport’s are an aspect of life that affect societies across the globe. Athletics affect everyone's life, whether that be playing the sport, watching games, or hearing about a sporting event. There is a big difference between playing an individual sport and players relying on their own athletic abilities versus a team sport when members of the team rely on their teammates to complete each individual's specific responsibility to reach the team's goal. Team sports bring people together in countless ways, and they teach many life skills for the athletes that participate in them. Some of these skills include communication, teamwork, discipline, work ethic, dedication, leadership, and numerous more that will help them in their personal and work
Basketball has been more than just a game in my life, it has always been a big part of my life, but it has been a part differently than what it is to others. I love everything about basketball. I have done everything from keeping the official book for a men's and women's collegiate team to washing a high school team's practice clothes and even making sure everyone has their uniforms and shoes before leaving for an away game. You don't have to be on the court, you don't have to be the one taking the winning shot or calling the play to be part of the team. I want you to think about this instead of feeling sorry for yourself because you didn't make the cut. I hope by the time you finish reading this you will realize
At their finest, coaches perfect their player’s flaws to push them to their potential ability, improve their skills, and create determination within the team. They can expand the importance of such a sport to intensify motivation and the value of good sportsmanship for the sake of not only their reputation, but the outcome that comes from it. Coaches must not lag when it comes to hardships that comes about; they must stay connected. The closer the connection between a player and a coach the better they are moving forward and continuing on the love of the sport and job.
Effective working relationships are the cornerstone for building and maintaining a successful team. Good team communication provides direction, vision and motivation to the members of the team. Team communication can be the sending or receiving of messages to or from management, between team members or from one team to another. Effective team communication increases team members' effectiveness and satisfaction because they are given the appropriate guidelines, tools and direction on how to accomplish tasks. The team needs to
The study “The Relationship Between Ethical and Abusive Coaching Behaviors and Student-Athlete Well-Being” was conducted by Mariya A. Yukhymenko-Lescroart, Michael E. Brown, and Thomas S. Paskus, and was published in the journal Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology. The researchers sought to understand the effects that a coach’s behavior had on a student’s morals, satisfaction, and impressions of team unity. Social-cognitive theory has long thought that we learn by imitating those around us, particularly those in leadership positions. The coaches of sports teams are especially prominent models in a student athlete’s life, given that they have actual authority over the student’s life. The idea of self-efficacy, which suggests that an
This study focused on the importance of leadership among the athletes themselves, their peer leaders. “The results showed that the majority of team task (65%), social (57%), and external (79%) leaders occupied a formal position on their team.” (Loughead, Hardy, & Eys, 2006, p. 142). These leadership functions have different behavioral characteristics provided to the team members. The task leader helps to focus the team on the goal at hand and helps with decision making within the team. This may be the player on the team who calls the plays, the team captain. The research indicated that it was important for team members to elect their captains and other leaders. The social leader brings cohesiveness and harmony to the team. He encourages and rallies the players to get together and get involved. The final leadership function, external leaders help promote the team in the community and help organize fund raising. In addition, leadership within the team, through peers and other group members was a factor in the overall success of the team. They help foster communication between the coaching staff and the athletes. In addition, “it was hypothesized the longer athletes were members of a team, the more likely they would be identified as a
As children we are taught to include everyone because it is not nice to leave people out. If this is a practice we are taught from a very early age, why is it okay to change that just to win a sporting event? There is an understanding that when you are in middle/high school, there will be tryouts for a sporting team. The children who are good enough, make the team, those who are not, get cut. With the understanding that some players skill level is higher than others, the playing time may not be the same. With that being said, if you are good enough to make the team, then why would you not be good enough to play for your team at least once every game? We all know the benefits of being on a team, learning to cooperate, working together to achieve a goal, helps improve for communication skills and allows youth to exercise. But what if you make this team and don’t ever get to play, are you still seeing these benefits to being on a team? If you tryout and make a school team, then all players should be allowed to play in and participate in every game.
In the discussion of communication and care one will be discussing the qualities of interpersonal skills and written communication in sports. This essay will explain qualities that a sports player or coach may need to progress in their career. One will also be looking at the positive and negatives that reside around having these skills and how to keep balance between the two. The author will also be discussing the different models of communication and how it can be used as an approach to handle a situation and even interact easier with pupils. Some of these interpersonal skills a coach could use is listening skills, reflection and even social awareness where a coach would have to make a difficult decision between his pupils.
Sports Coaching 1.1 Coaches across the world and across many different sports work with different styles to make their teams successful. “If a coach provides an athlete with information, particularly concerning health and fitness, the athlete is less likely to believe the coach than if the coach was considered fit and healthy” (Melville & Maddalozzo, 1988). This means that the coach is more likely to be trusted and listened to if they take on the social role to get to know their team and prove that they are a good role model. A good example is Martin Johnson coaching the England rugby squad. He is experienced and can also have the scientific role due to his knowledge of the game and what he may have learnt from previous coaches.
Identity refers to the way people see themselves--the groups they feel a part of, the significant aspects of themselves that they use to describe themselves to others. Some theorists distinguish between collective identity, social identity, and personal identity. However, they are
Sports are generally stereotyped as physical activities that require little to no cognitive abilities, but this could not be further from the truth. Sports are extremely mentally driven, and the psychological maturity of an athlete greatly influences their physical performance. These athletes’ coaches play a key role in not only strengthening the physical component of their game, but also the mental maturation within their chosen sport. Many researchers have studied how the coach affects the athlete on a psychological level, but one of the most prominent studies is, “The Association Between the Perceived Coach-Athlete Relationship and Athletes’ Basic Psychological Needs” by Hunhyuk Choi, Seongkwan Cho, and Jinyoung Huh. This study would appeal to a vast majority of the population, but would specifically intrigue both current, and future collegiate-level athletes, and coaches. It would inform both parties of their role within the Coach-Athlete-Relationship (CAR), and what a healthy CAR should both mimic and produce. This matter would also be of interest to anyone working in positions of authority over both the athletes, and the coaches. This could be parents, athletic directors, psychologists, department directors, or psychiatrists to name a few. All of these people holding leadership roles should know how the CAR will affect the athletes on both a physical and psychological level. This study shows that the CAR impacts every area of the athletes’ loves including
According to ESPN, 61 percent of boys and 34 percent of girls say that sports are a big part of who they are. Additionally, there are over 21 million kids between the ages of 6 and 17 that play sports (Kelley). This enormous number not only represents children playing a sport but it also represents something that each of those kids have in common: they each have a coach. There are three key things involved in every sport: the players, the competition, and the coaches. Each of these parts of the sport are important and necessary. Sports are not only a great way to exercise and keep fit, but they also teach kids a lot of important qualities that they will need to be successful for the rest of their lives. They teach them how to exercise, how to compete, how to work on a team, how to work toward a goal, and how to develop and manage relationships. No relationship, however, is more important than that between a coach and his/her player. A coach can be a player’s role model and inspiration but, unfortunately, a coach can also be a player’s work enemy and can ruin a sport for an athlete. Likewise, a player can either make a season enjoyable for his/her coach or can make the season miserable. I will explore the importance of the relationship between coaches and players and the effect that it can have on both parties.
Leadership has an impactful presence on the participation of sport. Various leadership styles and tendencies are displayed by coaches and administrators and we look to examine how these dimensions of leadership correlate with participant responsiveness, satisfaction, and motivation. In addition to the effects of leadership on participation, the effectiveness of multi-dimensional leaders will be discussed as well as the examination of leadership behaviors that yield the most satisfactory results among participants. It is important to note that there are many leadership behaviors; however we will look closely at the behaviors of the Leadership Scale for Sports developed by Chelladurai and Saleh (1980), which includes one task orientation: training and instruction behaviors, two styles of leaderships: democratic behaviors and autocratic behaviors, and two motivation factors: social support behaviors, and rewarding behaviors (Loughead and Hardy, 2005).
