Ted Buettner talks about blue zones and the people who live in there, and the way the people live to be so old. The people living in these places mainly eat a plant based diet, have some form of physical activity every day, and have a reason to get up each day. I do not think that it is very likely that my peers would be able to adopt to this kind of living each and every day for the rest of their life. I do have some peers that I know, that could adopt to this kind of living, but the majority of my peers always eat out and do not exercise and would be unable to live like this. Ted Buettner says that the first thing is “none of them exercise, at least the way we think of exercise.” The way they exercise is that they have some sort of physical movement each day, just as walking to store or getting up and down throughout the day. Many people that I know never go out for a walk, my peers usually play video games and do not get much physical movement in the day. Another thing they all have in common is how they eat. Ted Buettner says “There’s no longevity diet.” People that live in the blue zones usually have a little bit of wine to drink each day, they tend to have a plant based diet, and they have strategies to keep from overeating. My peers do not have any strategies for overeating; they will grab as much food as they can and go seat on the couch and eat all the food. Overeating is an easy thing to do living in the United States, when you go out and drive there are always places to stop and get something eat. I remember as a child my mother always took my brother and I to the local candy store and bought us all the sugar free candy, and when we asked why she would say there is always something healthy among the unhealthy. “They taste just as good but are not half as bad” she always said . This transition can also be made a reality by an individual actually choosing to go into a local deli or farmers market and purchasing healthy ingredients, to make a health home cooked meal and packing for lunch.

According to the Danish Twin Study, biology only factors into 10 percent of how long we live, the other 90 percent it based off lifestyle (Buettner 2009). Dan Buettner and his colleagues found three Blue Zones to try to find what types of lifestyles these people are living to become centenarians. America is known for its advanced society and technology, but is also known to be one of the most obese populations. Found in “Down to Earth”, America is one of the most progressive countries to exist; therefore it should be the healthiest (“Obesity in America”). If America is so highly advanced, more advancement needs to be put towards obesity rates. As time goes on, adults and children are having to consequently expand their waistbands because of unhealthy habits. Individuals of higher income levels often have private insurance that allows them to see a physician on a regular basis. These individuals are able to prevent many diseases before they exacerbate. They often eat low fat diets or plant based diets. They are educated on their nutritional health and often make better choices when choosing the different types foods to eat. Due to their income, they can afford to eat healthy food and make healthy food choices. Even though these individuals may be predisposed to certain diseases, their diets prevent them from becoming prevalent in their lives. Due to the individual’s socioeconomic status they make enough money that they don’t stress about the necessities in life. These individuals live in areas such as Roswell, Johns Creek. Alpharetta, Buckhead, Kennesaw, and Stockbridge. Individuals of a poor economic status have limited access to healthcare. These individuals often have Medicaid, Medicare, or no health insurance at all. They often eat diets that are high in fat. Individuals of poor economic status aren’t often educated about eating healthy. They often eat unhealthy because it is too expensive to eat healthy. These individuals often receive government subsidiaries such as WIC and SNAP benefits for themselves and their children. There aren’t many healthy food stores if any at all in these neighborhoods. Stores such as Whole Foods, Sprout, and Trader Joe’s aren’t located in poverty stricken communities because the individuals can’t afford the prices. It is a disadvantage that the grocery chains in the neighborhood don’t offer the resident a healthier option. It is a known fact that other countries eat healthier than here in the United States. For example, the Mediterranean diet contains many fruits and vegetables. It also replaces fattening oils with olive oil. In the article “Mediterranean Diet Shown to Ward Off Heart Attack and Stroke”, Gina Kolata states, “About 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease can be prevented in people at high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and even drink wine with meals, a large and rigorous new study has found” (nytimes.com). Many people who have gone on the Mediterranean diet have decreased their risk.
They reside in low income communities where unhealthy food choices are made due to lots of fast food stores. These areas are not safe so they tend to stay indoors and have minimal physical activity. There is limited amount of fresh produce and lots of sweets and snack items. Since these areas are not safe, there are few safe areas where children can play therefore they end up watching a lot of TV with no physical activity. The schools they attend have poor PE facilities so there is not much physical activity in school. There is also a high exposure to commercials of high sugar, high fat snacks.
Many entities living in the city occupy an inactive lifestyle, which can easily clout the intake of calories every day and overpower the number of calories charred through routine daily activities. Family members tend to share similar eating and activity habits, if someone in a household is not very active, they will not burn as many calories. The biggest difference between the Blue Zones and the Rest of America is their culture. In these areas, individuals tend to be naturally more active and eat healthier. In all three areas, they eat a mainly plant based diet in combination with other fresh, healthy foods like whole wheat bread, nuts, beans, and cheese full of Omega-3 fatty acids. These communities also find natural ways to keep them active – walking wherever they go, gardening, bike riding – and most importantly finding ways to stay active if they choose to retire. These cultures also tend to have a social system that finds pride in their elders, so aging adults are surrounded with family and friends.

In this case I look at my community and the factors that make up my community and in the event that what he states in his video is true, I do believe that my neighborhood and my community could absolutely adopt the ideas and concepts of a healthier lifestyle and live longer. However, I think most residents and occupants would agree to say that even though it is possible to implement all these finding into everyday life and make it a habit it just won 't happen.
