As a tennis player, who mostly plays singles, it is hard to believe that collaborating as team could help me accomplish more than I could alone, because I am on the court alone during competitions. Working with a team is the key to great accomplishments, even in tennis, when it is an individual sport. As the tennis captain, I lead by example, but I also work with my teammates to improve and push each other to do the best we can. We are able to work together and encourage each other during practices and matches. During singles competitions, each player is usually on court by themselves, but each and every one of our voices can be heard to cheer and support each other through the games. Working as a team we are able to accomplish more than just
Since my freshman year I’ve lived and experienced the benefit of collaboration. Both my high school and club coaches have always expressed the importance and the need to collaborate with teammates on and off the court. This was especially key my junior year. The Jserra Catholic high school basketball team I joined that year after transferring from Northwood was facing
When a team establishes trust and friendships, they can truly work together as a whole. Often times the teams I was a part of lacked in this area of bonding. Some of the girls on my soccer team would bicker behind others back and would also try to compete for
Throughout my life, I have frequently been a part of a team. Whether it was in an athletic, academic, or employment sense, I have learned many life lessons and values solely because I was a part of these teams. Growing up, I was involved in countless team-based sports in which I had a number of roles. There were times when I had to step up and lead, and times where I had to learn to take a step back and follow. I learned that I was only a small part of the success that happens and that the ultimate goal of the team was
Teamwork is an important part of success in volleyball. It’s not just about getting along with other teammates. That part is probably the easiest. Understanding a player’s limitations, my own limitations and being respectful in adverse situations took years to understand. Teamwork also means celebrating accomplishments. In school, students are often put into groups to work together. The challenges that go along with these projects correlates well to teamwork in volleyball. The mixture of intelligence, motivation and hard work can make for an interesting outcome and is oftentimes rocky
Abby taught me so much just by comforting me, and if I can impact just one teammate in the same way she did for me, I’d feel so proud. If a girl is feeling down about a match, if she's feeling discouraged, if she's doubting herself, I want to be there to pump her up. Tennis, like all sports, is such a mental game, and if you're not in the right mindset, you're not able to play your best. Encouragement and example are the two main things that I would focus on as a tennis captain. If it's a grueling, hot day for practice I want to be able to motivate the girls to push on and I want to show them that I can still try my hardest even if the weather is against
According to The Balance, leadership is defined as “the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.” To inspire all 800 students in my class seems merely impossible, but establishing myself as a leader for those on my tennis team made this task seem rather feasible. Leading this girls’ high school team has enabled me to expand my leadership beyond just my high school team and to the entire community. The sport of tennis has not only shaped my life, but it has helped me shape the life of others.
One thing we like to say is that “the group makes the whole better.” This is a great summarization of our team dynamics. We work together, and become one so that we can individually excel, and when we individually excel, the group as a whole excels. Overall, the swim team is an excellent example of how a group can have a rigorous status structure while also demonstrating group
Many people are excellent at showing sportsmanship and teamwork while playing a sport or in their everyday life. Morelia Sanchez was definitely one of them. Morelia played lacrosse in her sophomore year at Kennedy High School. I interviewed her about her definition of sportsmanship and teamwork, and also how she uses them in her everyday life. Morelia’s definition of sportsmanship is to make an effort and give it your all (and hopefully win). “Knowing how to lose is also important when playing any sport” she says as we all experience losing at one point or another. Teamwork also plays a big role when playing any sport. Morelia explained that teamwork to her is getting along with her teammates, as well as trying to have a good communication
Leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship are very important qualities for a sports team but can also be applied to the real world as well. Working as a team can help you accomplish many goals that you would think were not possible at first. In January of 2015, my teammates and I set up a can shake to raise money for our high school football team. Each of us stood outside to respectfully ask for donations in the cold weather. With those donations, we raised enough money to fund necessities for the program. The effort was worth it and my team ended up making the playoffs for the first time in a long time.
In the 1960s, men's tennis open titles were dominated by six Australian men: Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, John Newcombe, Tony Roche. Ken Rosewall, and Fred Stolle. Between 1961 and 1970, Australian men's tennis champions won at least one Open Singles title every year at either Wimbledon, the French or US Opens, as well as the Australian Open
I am a firm believer that group support can be enhanced by the backing of various team functions after practices as well as the games. Team members will be provided the opportunity to know one another on an individual level and, hopefully have the possibility to be friends. Also, the bonding could result in lifelong friendships, which are morally incredible. The other example I would use as a team building procedure is to pair each player up with a player they don’t know, in order for them to learn something different about that player that they didn’t know. I would also allow the team to provide their opinions and concerns, as a group and personally. It highlights to
When I have to work in a team, I try to reach success with others participants in assigned activities. I do not take the role of leader or follower. I consider myself just another participator, but always thinking about doing everything right and clean. I have always had in mind that teamwork are all those actions and activities that are carried out collectively. In order for there to be an excellent group work, I think is necessary is that the actions are developed collectively. This means that to carry out group work, the existence of an entertainer or coordination is not necessary. The collective performance of an action is sufficient, within the framework of mutual interaction.
There is a saying that many hands make light work. The essence of this statement is that more can be achieved as a collective than individually. We all have different skills, knowledge and personal attributes. By utilizing all of these different aspects in a team, more ideas can be generated. As more ideas are generated, more creative solutions are generated, leading to better results. It is amazing the amount of support that is created in teams, especially when the going gets tough. People will often go to what seems like extreme lengths when they know that they can rely on the support and encouragement of the team. Never underestimate the significance of this in
In the environment today, it is not unusual to see people working in teams to accomplish certain goals and tasks. During our youth, parents and teachers encourage us through various methods to work as part of a team. Whether a sports team, classroom team, or after school activities, parents and teachers and other authority figures start the introduction of working in teams and teaching the value of being able to work together to accomplish a common goal. As people progress through the various stages of their lives, everyone continues to strive to communicate. Communication is a part of everyday life. It may be overlooked in some areas, but when dealing with a team environment, communication is vital. One
This directly translates into their studies and their lives. In these team sports, success or failure in competition depends on many variables. When these variables align through effective teamwork a successful play emerges as the teammates work together through coordination, communication and cohesion in training to achieve this result. Everyone has a role in the team and is expected to execute their task effectively. Any sort of individualism proves detrimental to the team as we all know, there is no “I” in
